Authentic Iroquois Cornhusk Ceremonial Mask 1954
You are looking at an authentic 1954 cornhusk mask made by the Onondoga indians which is one of the five Iroquois tribes of N.Y. This was given to my Aunt on the reservation after being used in a corn harvest dance. It is all stated on a label inside the mask which word for word states the following: THIS CORN HUSK MASK 1954 WAS A GIFT TO MATTIE CONKLIN FROM PRINCESS WARI OF THE MOHAWK TRIBE. THIS CORN HUSK MASK WAS MADE BY THE ONONDOGA INDIANS ON THE ONONDOGA RES. OF NEW YORK STATE. THIS MASK WAS USED IN A CORN HARVEST DANCE ON THE RES. The Iroquois Indians lived in what is now New York State along the St. Lawrence River. The Iroquois Indians were know as the"Five Civilized Tribes" These tribes included the Cayuga. Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, and Seneca. The Iroquois Indian Tribe continues to occupy land in this region. These particular CEREMONIAL CORN HUSK MASKS were handmade by the Iroquois Indians out of Corn Husks The Iroquois Indians held six big festivals each year in which ceremonial masks and rattles were used. Each festival lasted several days. During these festivals music was made by shaking rattles and beating drums and the Indians would dress in ceremonial masks. These festivals included the New Year Festival in the winter. The Maple Festival in spring, the Corn Planting Festival, the Strawberry Festival, the Green Corn Festival, and the Harvest Festival of Thanksgiving. The festivals were held to give thanks to the good spirits for health, clothes, food, and happiness. This auction is for a print ad for Du Pont Nylon bras and girdles. The ad came from a large oversized magazine from 1954. So it measures about 13.5 x 10.5 inches. It was carefully removed from the magazine and has been neatly trimmed. The page is in excellent condition, with no tanning or yellowing from age. It has a small spot on the right edge where the staple rusted, but this could easily be trimmed away. Print Ads Print ads are pages from vintage magazines. Not reproductions. A superb and rare photo. Made from what we believe is the original negative, of the absolutely magnificent Ray Amm and his works Norton 500cc‘ Proboscis‘ factory racer on his way to VICTORY in the 1954 500cc Isle of Man Senior TT race! According the spec. sheet that came with the image. The photo was taken on June 18, 1954. Ray Amm won the race in a time of 1 hour. 42 minutes and 46.8 seconds, with an average race speed of 88.12 mph(141.82 km/u) The incredibly talented Ray Amm rode a Norton 500cc‘ Proboscis‘ or‘ Long Nose‘ factory racer. The nicknames came from the fairing because of the long streamlined front section. Ray Amm was a fantastic racer. His great riding style can be admired in this beautiful image! The year 1954 was to be his best racing season ever. Winning the Isle of Man 500cc Senior TT(SEE PHOTO! and finishing 2ND in both ... morethe 350cc as the 350cc World Championships! The 1954 Senior TT race was delayed due to weather conditions and reduced visibility on the Mountain Section of the course. The race is held after a short delay and starts at mid-day. Despite the conditions. Geoff Duke riding the works Gilera and leads Ray Amm riding for Norton by 14 seconds on lap 1. On the second lap, Geoff Duke laps in 26 minutes and 23 seconds at an average speed of 86.97 mph and Ray Amm laps at an average speed of 86.49 to reduce the lead to just 2 seconds. Further heavy rain and low cloud on the Mountain Section reduces speed further and on lap 2 and Ray Amm uses"feet-down" tactics on the slower corners. Then Geoff Duke decides to refuel on lap 3 and Ray Amm in second place goes straight through without stopping and now leads Geoff Duke by 32 seconds. At the Windy Corner on lap 4. The visibility is down to 20 yards and a decision is made to stop the race because of the conditions. This allowed Ray Amm. A superb and rare photo. Made from the original negative, taken during the 1954 125cc Grand Prix of the Netherlands. A.k.a. the Dutch T.T. Which was ridden on July 10. 1954. On this great scenic Dutch TT Assen image we see a fierce fight going on in the 125cc race. We see Italian Angelo Copeta on a MV Agusta 125cc Bialbero worksracer(nr. 7) German Hermann Paul Muller on the N.S.U. 125cc works racer(nr. 2) and Englishman Cecil Sandford on a MV Agusta 125cc Bialbero worksracer(nr. 10) Hermann Paul Muller eventually would finish the race in 2ND position. Cecil Sandford would finish in 5TH place and Angelo Copeta was forced to retire with engine trouble. The race was won by NSU works rider Rupert Hollaus with an average speed of 85.32 mph( 1126.93 km/h) with a similar NSU as Hermann Muller is seen riding on the image.
