Here is a rare original photo of legendary drummer and drum manufacturer GEORGE L. STONE possing in 1940 in front of what appears to be the ZILDJIAN CYMBALS factory.photo is 5 x 7" and has an AMERICAN STUDIOS 1940 stamp on back.George Lawrence Stone was born in 1886. He was the son of drum teacher and manufacturer George Burt Stone. George Lawrence learned drums and xylophone from his father and also helped out in his shop. Where the elder Stone tucked drumheads, turned drumsticks, made wooden foot pedals and sold violins. If I have had my share of success in teaching others, George Lawrence wrote in the November 1, 1946 bulletin of the National Association of Rudimental Drummers, its origin was in the way my father taught me, and in his counsel, so often repeated: If you accept a pupil you accept a responsibility. In one way or another ... moreyou've got to go through with him. There's no alibi if you don't. George Lawrence also studied with Harry A. Bowers and Frank E. Dodge. Learned timpani from Oscar Schwar of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and studied music theory at the New England Conservatory of Music. In 1910 he was a xylophonist on the Keith Vaudeville Circuit, and he played timpani and bells with the Boston Festival Orchestra. Stone played in the pit of Boston's Colonial Theater under the baton of Victor Herbert, and was a member of the Boston Opera Orchestra for five years. After George B. Stone's death in 1917. George Lawrence ran his father's drum factory and became principal of the Stone Drum and Xylophone School in Boston. He also wrote articles on drumming technique for International Musician and Jacob's Orchestra Monthly. OLD ORCHIDS OF HAWAII TIKI HULA GIRL PALM VOLCANO BOWL PRE-WWII 1940'S RARE FIND
For your consideration is a vintage old Orchids of Hawaii volcano bowl. It is in relatively good shape for its age. Which I believe dates back to Pre-WWII or the 1940's. It depicts a hula girl and palm trees. It does not have any chips or cracks, but unfortunately is missing the"volcano" piece that is supposed to be in the center of it. It appears as though someone removed it and thus, left some glue remnants behind. I have not tried to remove these. Some light crazing with age, but overall not bad. There is a very thin line that runs close to the top of the piece, but I do not believe it is a hairline because it does not reflect so on the inside. It could be a scratch or a manufactured mark. There is also a maker's mark(hole) on the bottom. I am no expert on these pieces, but I have found that newer ones usually come with ... morean alpha-numeric stamp on the bottom(which this one does not have) and have sharper graphics. This bowl also has the scalloped edging at the top. It measures about 7.5" wide and about 4.25" tall. Please look at all pictures and ask any questions you have. This very scarce and unusual pin. Ribbon and liberty bell in support of Governor Arthur H. James for President in 1940 is in very very nice shape. The pin and ribbon are 4 1/2" long and 2" wide. The liberty bell at the bottom is 1 1/2" high. In 1940, a reluctant James was nominated for President as a dark horse candidate at the GOP presidential convention. James' name remained in the voting through six ballots. James instead favored Robert Taft and then endorsed the winner, Wendell Wilkie.

1939 1940 New York World's Fair American Potter 4 Seasons Bowls
Up for your auction pleasure is a complete set of 4 Seasons Bowls from the American Potter exhibit at the 1939 New York World's Fair. Each of the bowls depict a different season and come in 4 different colors. The American Potter stamp on the back is from the 1940 season. These bowls have no chips or cracks. The orange Autumn bowl has what I think is an unfinished spot that received no glaze. Please see photo. Also the green Spring bowl has a lineof something around the inner rim. I have taken a photo of a section. I hesitate to call this a scratch or such. I'm not sure if it a substance that may have adhered to it over many decades if they were stacked? By all means one has to look hard to see it. It is very difficult to see at auction a complete set of these. You will see these often offered one at a time.
