This is a copy of a map of Connaugh(Connacht) Ireland by John Speed and was initially printed in the 1600's. It was taken(very carefully! from the book"The Counties of Britain. A Tudor Atlas by John Speed" which was printed in 1988. The map has been printed in colour on 2 pages of good quality paper. It measures 40cm x 30cm and would look lovely framed. As well as the map of Connaugh(Connacht) Ireland there is a map of Galway. On the rear of the map is some information about the county which describes the history and geography as it was in the 1600's. Speed’s Atlas was the first to show all the counties of Britain with towns. Villages and boundaries as they were at the time as they were at the time of Elizabeth I. With the first known‘aerial’ maps of towns, illustrations of battles, portraits of royalty, it is an elaborate ... morework of art. Please note that the map is printed on 2 separate pieces of paper which means that when the pages are put together the join in the middle is good but not quite perfect. For auction is this Rare 1630 Mercator& Hondius Map of Ireland Hiberniae II Tabula The map is taken from the Gerard Mercator(1512-1594) Henricus Hondius(1597-1651) Atalas published in Amsterdam probably 1630. It measures 15" by 20" and is double framed behind glass the reverse is displayed and is in Latin. It is in very good condition for its age and there is some slight browning mainly around the edges the colours are still very strong with little fading. Will post world wide. Decorative map of Ireland with north oriented to the right. The Island is divided into the four provinces of Ulster. Connaught, Leinster and Munster with counties delineated by dotted line. It is filled with pictorial depictions of the forests and topography and the location of cities, towns and major landowners. A table to the left deciphers the Irish names relating to geographical features and residents, noting that the presence of O before a name indicates Caput familiae. Or the head of the family, and Mc before a name indicates a Territorium fillii Satrapae. A region dominated by one related family. The sea is teeming with sea monsters and a pair of elegantly engraved ships, one of them aflame. A man in a curragh waving a trident is shown in the upper right near the dedication cartouche, and three other elaborate strapwork cartouches ... morefurther adorn the map. Boazio's of Ireland is one of the maps added by Joannes Baptista Vrients when he took over publication of Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum after Ortelius' death.
