Bacon. F.R.G.S. Publisher London: G.W. Bacon& Co. Limited, 127 Strand. 1893. The maps for sale here are all at least 115 years old. I removed them from the damaged atlas myself. Size/ Format In millimeters(and inches) Sheet: 540 x 345(21 x 13½) Map: 480 X 300(18¾ x 11¾) These maps were all'tipped in' to the atlas. Meaning that they could be removed as a single intact sheet. There is a fold in the centre of each map. The maps are lithographs on heavy paper. The colors and still bright and fresh. The margins are generous. Condition The overall condition of the maps is very good/ excellent. There is the occasional spot in the margins of a few of the maps. And the occasional minor tear(always completely confined to the margins) has been professionally repaired. The photos included in the listings are of the actual maps you will receive, Remarks This atlas is relatively scarce. I was only able to find three rather pricey examples available online. A fourth is in the custody of the UK National Archives. Many of the maps that appeared in this atlas were originally published by Bacon in the 1860s as the highly sought after Weekly Dispatch series of maps. These maps are unusually rectangular with a length to width ratio of 1: 1.56. Which was, and is, unusual. The double maps are somewhat longer or'taller' than usual when vertical, and somewhat longer'wider' than usual when horizontal. This Commercial and Library Atlas offers a refreshing change from Bartholomew's widely adopted treatment of the world's geography with pleasant surprises like Tasmania occupying a full double page ma

1842 Lewis Atlas England Wales Map Antique Old Book London Yorkshire Lancashire
An Atlas. Comprising Maps of the Several Counties, Divided into Unions, and of the Islands of Guernsey, Jersey, and Man; with a Map of England and Wales, and a Plan of London and its Environs. London: Published by S Lewis and Co. 87, Hatton Garden. M.DCCC.XLII" This is the map volume that accompanies Lewis's Topographical Dictionary of England and Wales. This was first issued in 1831. This edition is dated 1842. The maps are all by R Creighton. And give a superb picture of early Victorian England and Wales. The London map is particularly sought-after, being superbly detailed, and has often been removed but is present in this example. So too the large(54cms x 41.5cms) fold-out map of England and Wales which highlights the principal Roads, Railways, Canals, and Rivers. I counted 52 County maps, which include 3 Island maps(Man, Jersey, ... moreand Guernsey etc. Many of these are fold-out and so quite large- Yorkshire is some 54cms x 43.5cms. They all have lovely outline original handcolouring. The Atlas is 33cms x 26cms. Condition: The boards etc. of this Atlas are not in good condition. The boards are marked and bumped. Much of the spine is missing, and the back board is completely detached. Inside, there is an old bookplate"W Sprent" The front endpaper and title page are detached. From there on things improve greatly. The Atlas is complete, including the admired London plan and the fold-out map of England and Wales. I counted 52 County maps(which include Islands) There is some foxing, but all very acceptable, and with the most bright and attractive outline handcolouring as you can see in the photos. Many of the maps are fold-out and as is often the case some of these have torn along the folds, and even into the maps a little(see the photo of Yorkshire for one of the worst offenders) but these are not large faults. 1846 Lewis Scotland Huge Maps Antique Old Books Topographical Dictionary Glasgow
3 large volumes. All published in London by Samuel Lewis, and dated 1846. The set forms a first edition. The Dictionaries are very large books. Vol 1 646 pages including Index, and vol 2 622, with much detail of all the towns, villages etc. listed. The third volume which consists of the large and impressive map consists of 6 fold-out sections. Each section is large, the scale of the map being 5 miles to 1 inch. They vary in size a little, but to give an idea, the N.E. section 6 is some 70cms x 67cms. So each map displays much detail, and there is original outline handcolouring which is a delight. There is a fine vignette of Melrose Abbey, and a splendid Title, etc. The 2 Dictionaries measure 33.5cms x 26.5cms. The map book is much the same size. Condition: There are 3 volumes. The covers and spines of both of the dictionaries are poor. Both ... morevolumes lacking a spine almost completely. The boards are attached, but not firmly. Please see details visible in my photos. However, inside the books things improve a good deal. They are both clean, and holding together well. Both have an old bookplate on the front endpaper"W Sprent" The impressive map is in a better condition, with most of the spine intact and the marked but acceptable boards are attached well inside. The maps are generally in a good condition with lovely original handcolouring. The only fault is a common one with this set, a design fault: on each of the maps, there is a fold tear top and bottom just where it joins the book page. Sometimes this has led to a slight tear into the map. But there is no loss. As mentioned these are big and heavy volumes. Within most of the UK it will be free. Using a courier service(for which I will need a phone number of the buyer) I am prepared to ship these worldwide: please contact me for details, but I suspect some £50.00 to USA etc. If only the map is required(for the same price! this will reduce the postage cost. Rare 1778 Ireland Map. This is the Key map from Taylor& Skinner's Maps of the Roads of Ireland This is from the 1st edition published in 1778. Payment: Please study the details photos for condition as there are too many things to mention. I will say that it was folded into the above volume and some of the folds have been strengthened from behind with clear archival tape which can be seen in photos. Also a tear right hand edge just crossing border. There are around 6 small holes that have been strengthened behind with archival tape these are mainly on the folds and are actually quite unobtrusive to my mind. I have had a number of copies of this map and in the past are they were all in much worse condition than this copy. I would say this is the best one I have ever seen and for a map folded into a book that is older that 200 years ... morethis map is in very good condition and a better copy would be very hard to find.
