They provide an invaluable overview of a wider area, typically 18 miles across by 12 miles down. They also mean that they can offer historical coverage for small villages where a large scale map would not be commercially viable This Inch to the Mile map covers areas of Counties Cavan. Fermanagh and Leitrim. Coverage stretches from Lough Nilly southward to Lough Allen, and from Killadiskert eastward to Swanlinbar. The only substantial settlement on the map is Swanlinbar. 1609 Bertius Map- Hibernia Petrus Bertius was a professor of mathematics and librarian at Leyden University in Holland but is known for his miniature world atlas'Tabularum geographicarum contractarum' which contained two different sets of maps. This map comes from a Dutch edition of the'Tabularum. published in 1609 by C. Claez. This map of Ireland has clear engraving and good detail; provinces noted include Ultonia(Ulster) Connatia(Connaught) and Monionia(Munster) but not Leinster. Numerous settlements are included and decoration is provided by swash engraving in the sea as well as a sailing vessel. The map has a title cartouche and a scale of distance. 1618 Fine Bertius Map of Central Ireland
1616 Bertius Map- Udrone Petrus Bertius was a professor of mathematics and librarian at Leyden University in Holland. He is known for his miniature world atlas'Tabularum geographicarum contractarum' Although not an actual mapmaker himself. Bertius's text was embellished with maps from the foremost engravers of the late 1500's and early 1600's, including Pieter Van den Keere and Jocodus Hondius. Described as"the most numerous and finest set of miniature maps ever printed" by Geoffrey King(Miniature Antique Maps) The maps engraved by Jodocus Hondius Jnr for the second French edition of'Tabularum geographicarum contractarum. are much sought after by collectors. This nice decorative map of the baronetcy of Idrone in county Carlow in south east Ireland is from that edition and the superb engraving is immediately ... moreevident. I have here for sale phenomenal map of Ireland published in 1846. Published by Arrowsmith. This is entitled a Skeleton Map of Ireland having delineated thereon the course of the several projected railways which have been deposited at the Board of Trade for 1846 published under the authority of the boards of Trade, which means that all of the counties are shown but not the towns and villages. It is linen backed and measures 170cm by 140cm- very big indeed! It is in poor condition, with a piece of sea missing off the West coast but not affecting any land. Some marks here and there, some edge bits are nibbled, but it is a rare map and would be well worth restoring- there is just one copy shown on COPAC and that is held by the British Library. Original 1880 map 13.4 x 17. 6 inches of Brewster Massachusetts from Barnstable County Atlas of 1880. The color and tone of the map is good and the flaking is limited to areas between the edge and the outer margin. Using matting can cover all of the flaking. The first image shows the condition of the map and the second image shows how matting can cover the broken sections. In good condition this map sells for around $200-$350. This map is from the first Walker atlas of Barnstable County shows all of the towns and villages along with building footprints and the names of the property owners. It comes from'An Introduction to Geography by Questions and Answers' published in 1738. This an original antique folding map engraved by J& C Walker is from"Harrow Atlas of Modern Geography" under the supervision of The Society for The Diffusion of Useful Knowledge and is published by Edward Stanford. London, 1862. The map shows excellent detail. The map measures 44 cm x 36 cm, 17 inches x 14 inches. This map is in good condition except for a small split in the fold with no loss. The map was printed before colour printing had yet to be perfected so the original colouring is done by hand. The map is printed on one side only and is perfect for framing. If you are unhappy with the item once you receive it, you can return it for a refund. An excellent original antique example of Robert Morden's map of Ireland entitled'The Kingdom of Ireland' Taken from the 4th and final edition of Camden's'Britannia' to contain Morden's maps, printed in 1772. The map itself measures approx 345mm x 410mm with good sized margins beyond and includes significant detail of place-names, roads and terrain. The map includes a title cartouche and two scales of distance as well as the printers names(Abel Swale, Ansham and Churchill) Morden's maps from the 1772 edition of Britannia are highly collectable and are noteworthy for the high quality paper on which they are printed and for the clear printing inpression which is not always evident in some of the earlier editions.
