Up for bid is this antique Russian brass St. George cross icon hanging candle holder with the double headed eagle. This cross icon candle holder is 29" long and is 15 1/4" at it's widest. It has the Russian double eagle of the Russian Empire and has Saint George riding a horse holding a Ferula. I am not an expert on this. But I believe I am close on this. This is the most unusual piece I have ever owned. I bought this at the Brimfield Antique show years ago. The man selling it said it came from a family who moved here from Greece. When in Greece. Their relative(grandfather, great grandfather? used this girth on his donkey while plowing the field. The icons on it were to bless and protect the donkey, to ask God to keep the donkey from any harm. I have never seen another, but maybe you have? I am not sure of it's value. If one were to measure it by rarity, and faith- it would be priceless. I like knowing that this man was such a holy and devout man, and cared so much for his donkey too. It measures approximately 11 inches by 7-3/4 inches on a 1 inch board. It depicts St George slaying the dragon. An allegory for the triumph of the good and godly over the evil and satanic. In the traditional legend, St George freed a Libyan city from a dragon that had been tormenting its citizens.
