The iconography subject is closely associated with a Greek icon of the Hodigitria Mother of God. By this Icon young people are blessed at the altar. Surrounded by a hand chased and repousse' silver plated brass riza and she has a gilt halo The two insert splints on the backside are missing The silver plate is worn and I can see the brass in some areas She measures 12" by 10" and weighs a heavy 3 pounds 9 ounces I am guessing she dates to the 19th century and is very old 12 photographs show her condition better than I can All items I sell are vintage and most are antique. Very good quality Russian Icon of SMOLENSKAYA MOTHER OF GOD hand painted with tempera on board. The gilded silver oklad Stamped 84 and dated 1889. Measurements is approximately 8 3/4" x 7" x 1( 22 cm x 18 cm x 2.5 cm) There are some minor scratches and loses to the paint. All shown in the pictures. This venerated Icon image is among the many national"miracleworking" Icons attributed to the apostle Luke. The original Icon of this type dates back to the year 1239 in Russia. Russian icon Mother of God of Yakhrom Size =28 X 23.5 X 2 cm.11" X 9 1/4" Weight= 516gr. 1 Lb 3 Oz) The icon was painted with egg tempera on a wooden panel covered with levkas(gesso. Special priming) Levkas was hand engraved and covered with the leaf silver. This technique served as an imitation of the leaf gold. The Yakhrom Icon of the Mother of God appeared to the holy youth Cosmas(February 18) While he was accompanying his master, a sick landowner. Cosmas had stopped at the bank of the Yakhrom River, not far from Vladimir, and the sick man fell asleep. Cosmas suddenly saw a bright light coming from a nearby tree, and heard a voice, Attend and understand the words of life. Live a God-pleasing life and seek the joy of the righteous, and then you will delight in eternal blessings. The light had come from an icon of the Dormition ... moreof the Most Holy Theotokos. St Cosmas(February 18) took the icon and placed it on his master. Who was immediately healed. After this, Cosmas’s term of servitude expired, so he went to the Kiev Caves monastery. After he was tonsured, he amazed even the experienced monks by his own spiritual efforts. Years later. St Cosmas was told by an angel to return to the place where he had found the icon. He took the wonderworking icon with him to the bank of the Yakhrom River where he had found the icon. At once, the place was again filled with light. St Cosmas built a monastery in honor of the Dormition of the Mother of God, and placed the Yakhrom Icon within it.

The saints on the left and on the right borders are believed to be St Dmitri and St Andrean. The icon of the Mother of God of Kazan was discovered by a girl called Matrona in 1579. The house where the nine-year-old Matrona lived with her parents burned to the ground in the same year. After this event.
