Vintage Case XX Marlin Spike rigger's knife. Marked 3246r on the blade. The main blade snaps nicely and stops halfway open and fully open. It must be designed to do so. The marlin spike snaps too. Wiggles a bit when closed and open. Handles in ok shape. Some indentations and scratches. Minor corrosion marks on the blades. The marlin spike is used for working with lines on a ship. I am selling a family estate and will be listing many fantastic antiques. Art and estate items. This is a superb 19th century silver plate Victorian fish serving set with bone handles. It was most likely made in Sheffield. England about 1870 but there are no marks. The knife and fork have exquisite etched and pierced detailing on the knife blade as well as the fork. The knife has hand etching of a lovely boat scene. They are in their original presentation box which is lined with blue silk and velvet. The interior of the box is in very good condition and snaps close securely. The overall condition is excellent. There is no silver plate loss. There is no damage. Cracks or chips to the handles and they look unused. The blade has very minor wear consistent with flatware that is almost 150 years old! And they are both very nicely crafted. THE KNIFE It appears to be a theater knife or custom made hunting knife of some kind. Which was most probably made from a butcher knife, thought it might possibly have been made this way originally. The knife has a thin copper guard and copper ring around the front of a one piece wooden handle, which is shaped so that the widest part of the handle is at the back, or pommel area. The knife has a blade length of 7& 3/16 inches, and an overall length of 12& 1/2 inches. The blade maker's name was stamped on the left side of the blade, though part of it has worn off through repeated sharpening and use. ... moreThe visible text is in two lines, and reads, OR EDGE TOOL WORKS LTD. next line) D LEDGE. MICH. An internet search filled in the blanks. And we know that the blade was originally marked"VANATOR EDGE TOOL WORKS LTD. GRAND LEDGE. MICH. Made in a shop that fully understood exactly what they were doing, and did it very well! The body of the scabbard follows the shape and contour of the blade, and the top of the scabbard widens out to follow the contours of the handle. Two layers of leather were used for the back of the scabbard, accompanied by a full length welt(spacer) and an additional short-length spacer at the top; all of this separating the back of the scabbard from the piece of leather on the front of the scabbard.
