Antique Victorian Ornate Mechanical Doorbell, Patented Dec. 30, 1879 Cast Iron
Up for bids we offer this 19th Century Victorian doorbell in good. As-found condition. Made of cast iron, this bell is very ornate and has its internal mechanism intact. It's not rusty, cracked or otherwise damaged. To be functional, it needs a pull or operator which was missing when we found the bell. These can be found here on Ebay or at architectural salvage shops and are even reproduced. It has a patent date of December 30, 1879 on the back. The bell has a diameter of 4 1/2 inches; with the mounting holes included, it has a total width of 5 5/8 inches. The surface shows wear and has some bits of old paint here and there from when the door it was once mount on was painted several times over the decades. It's a nice, original Victorian element salvaged from an old Western New York home that's ready for reuse in the renovation ... moreof another house of the same period. AN ANTIQUE ARCHIBALD KENRICK& SONS CAST-IRON DOOR KNOCKER& LETTER BOX WITH THE FAMOUS BAT MOTIF In antique. Used condition(please see the photos) so could do with some TLC, a potential buyer may want to remove the old green paint& remove tarnishing/rusting to the letter flap& the spring holder on the back. There are small chips to the paint here and there- the paint looks very old& may even be Victorian. The spring to the letter flap is missing but can be replaced. Otherwise no damage or missing parts- there are what I think are the two original bolts to attach the letter box to a door plus two nuts. Kenrick bat door knockers may be seen on page 41 of Michael Owen's reference book: Antique Cast Iron' They were made during the second half of the 19th century(c.1870's onwards) for the front doors of the cottages ... morewhere Kenrick workers lived& were not made in large numbers& are therefore collectable. As well as being amusing and practical items. The casting number on this one is'No 61' which means that this is an early casting. There are some other numerals or letters on the back of the door knocker but I can't make them out. I can't see the name'Kenrick' on the item- it may be there under paint or it may be that the company name was not embossed into the earlier castings. I don't know. Either way, it is a Kenrick door knocker& letter flap. The knocker measures 24.5 in length& 10 cm in width(9& 5/8 by just under 4" The bolts measure 6.1 cm in length& are sited 18.9 cm apart. Weighs 1.034 kg& this is reflected in the postage quote. The item will be posted by recorded tracked delivery in order to comply with eBay's posting rules. Approximately 7.5" wide, 4.5" tall and 2" deep. Center cover removes for wall mount and wiring. Clean white plastic, no chips cracks or stains, only the very lightest rub from the box lid on the center cover. Has bottom"grill" to hide bell from view below. Facing the unit, the lower right side metal band does have a replaced rivet, and the band is slightly warped, but looks easily correctable. Probably from the 1940s or 1950s, would look great in an Art Deco, International or mid-century home. This is a solid brass door knocker. in the shape of an ELEPHANT. mostly its trunk. with its MAHOUT astride its head. It measures 7" long. Beautifully decorated large Victorian heavy brass door bell pull assembly complete with rear mount plate measuring approx. 6 3/4" long x 3 1/4" wide.
