Each volume undertakes to describe the major events that happened in one specific time period(or“age” in the development of mankind’s civilization(s) The volumes are richly illustrated. And designed as an introduction to the time frame covered. Especially compelling are the artists interpretations or recreations of what various ancient civilizations would have looked like– their architecture, homes, monuments, cities, daily life, jewelry, food, family life, dwellings, occupations, etc. As just one instance, the ruins of Babylon and Ur, Athens and Rome hint at the incredible richness of those fabled cities. The artist’s recreations in this series are simply mind-numbing. This is as close as you can be to actually having been there. Equally noteworthy are the photographic collections of artifacts a

Very light porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: This is a very handsome. Decorative piece of ancient Roman silver ornamentation. It was probably an ornamental appliqué for a belt or strap, though it could have also been an appliqué for a piece of furniture, wooden chest, or table implement. It’s hard to be certain, but it does appear as if it might have been originally fastened onto a leather strap or belt. In any event the appliqué was discarded or lost almost two thousand years ago. It shows minimal wear, and minimal porosity(surface pitting caused by burial in caustic or acidic soil conditions) Notwithstanding this evidence of usage in the ancient world. It is in wonderful condition, the engraving very sharp, and the artifact is quite handsome. It is the type of decorative ornamentation one would have expected to find on a belt or strap employed by a Roman Soldier. Many pieces of equipment and weaponry were carried on the person of a Roman Legionnaire, many held in place with belts(and buckles) and such ornamental appliqués were quite popular. You'll note the engraved concentric circle on the center of the applique. This concentric circle was intended to provide the wearer a charm providing protection against the effects of"an evil eye" There was an ancient belief that some evil sorcerers or witches had the ability to transmit evil with ju

Marcus Aurelius: Meditations(Unabridged) Edited by William Kaufman. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 99 pages. Publisher: Dover Publications. Inc; 1997) ISBN: ... more048629823X. One of the world’s most famous and influential books. Meditations” by the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius(121-180 A.D. incorporates the stoic percepts he used to cope with his life as a warrior and administrator of an empire. Ascending to the imperial throne in 161 AD, Aurelius found his reign beset by natural disasters and war. In the wake of these challenges, he set down a series of private reflections, outlining a philosophy of commitment to virtue above pleasure and tranquility above happiness. Reflecting the emperor’s own noble and self-sacrificing code of conduct. This eloquent and moving work draws and enriches the tradition of Stoicism, which stressed the search for inner peace and ethical certainty in an apparently chaotic world. Serenity was to be achieved by emulating in one’s personal conduct the underlying orderliness and lawfulness of nature. And in the face of the inevitable pain, loss, and death; the suffering at the core of life, Aurelius counsels stoic detachment from the things that are beyond one’s control, and a focus on one’s own will and perception. Presented here in a specially modernized version of this classic George Long translation. This updated and revised edition is easily accessible to contemporary readers. It not only provides a fascinating glimpse into the mind and personality of a highly principled Roman of the second century, but also offers today’s readers a practical and inspirational guide to the challenges of everyday life. CONDITION: New. Never read. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: Marcus Aurelius reigned from 161 AD to 180 AD. And was perhaps the only true philosopher-king in the history of the world. Publisher: University of California Press; 1998) This animated and readable book will surprise readers who assume that erotic art is universal in its meaning. Author John R. Clarke asks. what did sex mean to the Romans? In offering his provocative and thoughtful answer, Looking at Lovemaking” examines Roman attitudes toward sex and toward race, ethnicity, physical deformity, and humor as well; and shows how radically the Roman’s conception of these ideas differs from ours today. This richly illustrated volume is the first study of ancient erotic art and sexuality to set these works, many of them newly discovered and previously unpublished, in their ancient context, and the first to define the difference between modern and ancient concepts of sexuality using clear visual evidence. To characterize a work of art as“erotic” summons ideas of illicit images to be kept out of public view. And yet Clarke shows us that Roman depictions of sex. In all its diversity, were very much in demand. Visual representations of sex between men, between women, and between men and women, all in a variety of positions and groupings, were produced in a range of media, from fine cameo-glass and silver vessels to wall-paintings and mosaics, to mass-produced ceramics. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: If you have any interest in archaeology or the origins of mankind. This is a MUST READ. Acclaimed both by critics as well as the general public– the story of one of the most significant finds ever of Paleoanthropology. 409 pages. Publisher: Simon and Schuster; 1981) When Donald Johanson discovered a partial skeleton. Approximately 3.5 million years old, in the remote Afar region of Ethiopia in November of 1974, he knew he had stumbled onto something unique. Bursting with all the suspense and intrigue of a fast-paced adventure novel, and filled with lively, up-to-the-minute scientific detail and marvelous illustrations in color and black-and-white, this significant book unfolds the extraordinary discovery of“Lucy” the oldest, most complete, best-preserved skeleton of any erect-walking human ancestor ever found, and the first new species to be named in more than 15 years. The book reveals the controversial change Lucy makes in our view of human origins, and provides a vivid, behind-the-scenes account of the entire history of paleoanthropology; as well as the eccentric, colorful characters who are and were a part of it. In January 1979. Johanson’s startling“official” announcement of his discovery of Lucy(which is how the world knows her, from the Beatle’s song“Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” even though her scientific name is Australopithecus afarensis) was an event that captured headlines, catapulted a young, relatively unknown American paleoanthropologist into international acclaim, and created a spirited, ongoing controversy among experts; including most notably Mary and Richard Leakey, in this wonderfully enigmatic field of fierce rivalries and astonishing breakthroughs.
