It is without a doubt a superior strike, considerably larger and heavier than the typical specimen of the era. The obverse of the coin depicts Roman Emperor Philip I, draped and with radiate crown; and the legend“IMP M IVL PHILLIPVS AVG” M IVL PHILIPPVS” refers to the Emperor’s name. Marcus Julius Philippis. Measurements: Length: 15mm. Weight: 2.61 grams. DETAILS: Early in Rome’s history silver(and gold) came from Spain via the Phoenicians and their colony of Carthage. Partly motivated by a desire to control that trade. Rome engaged Carthage in three wars(the“Punic Wars” In fact father of the great Carthaginian General Hannibal was not only himself one of Carthage’s most famous generals, he was also a precious metals merchant. The Romans virtually deforested the entire country of Spain making charcoal to smelt silver and gold. When the silver in Spain began to play out, in 55BC Rome’s Julius Caesar invaded Britain, in part to acquire the rich silver deposits there. The Romans were the first to mass-produce coinage on a monumental scale, the first truly monetized society. Between 100 and 400AD the Romans produced billions of silver and bronze coins. At the height of the Empire. There were over 400 mints producing coinage throughout the empire. Silver was also fashioned into Greek-style jewelry. The chief centers of production were Alexandria, Antioch, and Rome, to which Greek craftsmen had migrated. In celebration of that heritage here is a pair of gorgeous, solid sterling silver designer earrings. I picked these up at a trade show recently as samples for a fraction of their retail value, and am passing the savings. Most Roman glass vessels recovered complete(intact or repairable) are between 1½ and 3 inches in size– this one obviously exceeds the high end of this scale. However though complete, in a sense it is not intact. The glass perfume bottle was broken, whether in ancient times or perhaps when it was excavated, as there is a fairly clean break toward the bottom. The repair however seems to have been made with bitumen(tar) which would indicate that the repair was ancient. Some of the bitumen has been lost, so there is a small hole in the side of the bottle. But it appears to have been repaired and reused in ancient Rome– a rather uncommon find. Small jars. Pitchers, unguentariums, jugs, bottles, jars and flasks like this were used to contain aromatic oils, perfumes, medicinal ointments, and cosmetics. It is not to say that the Romans did not use larger pieces of glass on their tables such as bowls and cups; and even larger containers for transporting foodstuffs; because they did. In fact whatever the Romans had produced in clay in the first and second centuries B.C. was by the first and second centuries A.D. more common

Measurements: Length: 21mm. Breadth: 18mm. Weight: 2.61 grams. DETAILS: At many points in the ancient world. Silver was actually more costly than gold, particularly in ancient Egypt. Many historians have argued that it was the possession and exploitation of the Laurium mines by the Athenians that allowed them to become the most powerful city state in Greece. At the time these mines started producing prodigious amounts of silver, the price of silver in ancient Egypt was pegged at half that of gold. Enough silver was mined and refined at Laurium(and sold to Egypt) to finance the expansion of Athens as a trading and naval power. Estimates are that Laurium produced 160 million ounces of silver, worth six billion dollars today(when silver is by comparison to gold relatively cheap and abundant) As the production of silver from the Laurium mines ultimately diminished, Greek silver production shifted to mines in Macedonia. Macedonia’s coinage during the reign of Philip II(359-336 B.C. circulated widely throughout the Hellenic world. His famous son. Alexander the Great(336-323 B.C. spread the concept of coinage throughout the lands he conquered. For both Philip II and Alexander silver coins became an essential way of paying their armies and meeting other military expenses. They also used coins to make a realistic portrait of the ruler of the country. The Romans also used silver coins to pay their legions. Roman silver coins also served as an important means of political propaganda, extolling the virtues of Rome and her emperors, and continued in the Greek tradition of realistic portraiture. CLASSIFICATION: Faceted Canary Yellow Sapphire Round. ORIGIN: The Ural Mountains. Russia. 19th Century. SIZE: Diameter: 4mm. Depth: 2mm. All measurements approximate WEIGHT: Approximately 0.28 carats. NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstones as a ring. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: Ancient Hebrew legends state that the tablets upon which the Ten Commandments were written. Were actually sapphire, and biblical accounts record that King Solomon wore a sapphire ring. Monarchs of the ancient world oftentimes wore sapphires around their necks as a powerful defense from harm. They preserved the wearer from envy and attracted divine favor. Ancient Hebrew sorcerers and mystics valued the sapphire above all other gemstones, believing that sapphire enabled them to interpret oracles and foretell the future. Many linguists and scholars believe that the name sapphire is derived from its association with the planet Saturn(the name can be roughly translated to mean“dear to the planet Saturn” in many different languages) In ancient Rome Saturn was a major god presiding over agriculture and the harvest time. His reign was depicted as a Golden Age of abundance and peace. Celebrating that cultural legacy here's a gorgeous. Vibrantly colored natural canary yellow sapphire precious gemstone from the Ural Mountains of Russia. The gemstone was hand crafted and faceted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. The faceted cut is a coarse precursor to what eventually became known in the industry as a“brilliant cut” round, the contemporary finish generally given to round diamonds. The results is an exquisite and incredibly beautifully colo
