Antique Straw Weaved Chair Fan Back Cross Spindle "Windsor Style" Warm Elegance
This is a beautiful antique chair. It has a nice fan back style with cross spindles. This is similar to a Windsor Chair but I can not verify the manufacturer so selling as is. This chair is an antique and has marks and wear consistent with its age. The leg section is solid. The spindle section is solid. There is a split or seperation on an area where the spindles connect(see pic) The straw is mostly intact with some areas with distress. The finish is warm. Dark and aged. Has a number on the bottom, see pic. I would consider this chair for decoration to be in good shape. If you intend to use it for seating then it will definitely need some repair. This chair will be an attribute to any decor and a worthwile investment.

American Windsor Sack Back Antique Arm Chair, possibly Rhode Island c. 1780-90
AMERICAN WINDSOR SACK BACK ARM CHAIR. NEW ENGLAND STATES Possibly Rhode Island. C. 1780-1800 Item# 112CRD02 With a very attractive profile. This American Windsor Sack Back armchair makes a striking selection for a well fitted period interior. Probably originating from Rhode Island, the chair exhibits many characteristics associated with chairs from that region, though the closeness in form to works from Boston and Connecticut make a firm attribution a bit difficult and will require further research. The plank seat is a single solid board of chestnut. Carved for comfort and oval in form with a thin channel along the back outlining the gallery of spindles- chestnut is commonly found in seats of Rhode Island windsors, along with yellow poplar, maple, walnut and basswood. An old crack in the seat is healed from the underside with a butterfly ... moredovetail joint. Remnants of a green paint over a milky white paint are visible on the underside of the chair. The steam bent crest rail wraps around the middle seven spindles, each of which tenon through the crest and poke over the top, before completing on either side in a square tenon through the arm rail. The surface of the hickory arm rail is just delightfully worn. The grains completely filled from years of friction and wax; the short spindles and turned red oak arm supports tenon through the rail and are secured with a split-wedge tenon- the turned oak arm supports are also locked in place from the sides with square pegs and join the chair firmly through the seat. Examples of the distinctively shaped arm pad are prevalent in the lengthy section on Rhode Island windsors c. 1750-80 in Goyne's text(see below) It rests over four handsomely splayed turned maple ring-and-baluster legs locked in place with a maple H-form stretcher. The medial stretcher shows a bold swell, in tandem with the sides, this flanked by sharp rings on either side. With good strength in all joints. It is an outstanding acquisition for any collector with an eye for New England forms in windsor chairs

Extremely Rare Antique Fan Back Windsor Side Chair Lancaster County. PA ca. 1780 Lancaster County. PA circa 1780-1800 Se the entire slide show here via Flickr: Highly sought after windsor design and manufactured chairs are those from Lancaster County. PA or Lancaster City This chair has all of the Lancaster manufacture earmarks. Boldly shaped seat, boldly turned legs with blunt arrow feet. The base turnings are simply the best you'll see on a windsor form. This particular chair. Is kind of quite a anomaly. Normally the back legs are turned much plainer than the front legs, but on this example they match front to back. A very early chair. The shape of the fan is much earlier than the typical Lancaster chairs you may be familiar with. This chair is a melding of early chairs of the Philadelphia area and Lancaster City chairs. With the wide ... morefan back, and shapely crest rail culminating in shapely ears. The crest rail is very thick and heavy, along with the overly bold shaped seat suggests a country manufacture, with city influences. We are uncertain of the surface. It has a very well worn alligatored surface, blackened over time. We are fairly certain the surface that's on it has been there since the 19th century, and possibly considerably earlier. There is no evidence of a painted surface on the chair. Similar examples are in"Windsor Chairs in America" by Nancy Goyne Evans. And"Windsor Style in America" by Charles Santore. Similar chairs were sold at Christies in 1994 and the George W. Scott collection held on the campus of Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster. Mr. Scott was well know for his high end Pennsylvania folk art and furniture collection. Boldly shaped seat. Wonderfully shaped and fan back. Nice dark warm colour. Well worn patina. Simply a superb chair overall. Condition: No major breaks. The back of the crest rail has a very old break that is very stable. The right stile has been shored up with a screw repair about 100 years ago. The finish has been mellowed over the years

18th Century Child's Vasiform Splat Back Windsor Arm Chair branded M QUINCEY
This auction features what I believe to be is a rare late 1700s European Thames Valley splat back. Low back Windsor chair. It's primitive construction includes visible pegs in the seat from where the legs are attached, peg construction throughout and uneven turnings. There are also nails throughout the chair that I believe were added later for reinforcement or perhaps a historic repair. The finish is undeniably original and with a beautiful patina. Its original and period spanish brown painted surface is extensively worn as one would expect along the seat, back, and especially along the armrests, which are so smooth they have a different feel than the rest of the wood. The hoop back and comb design is accented by a simple and unornate splat with a marginal vase shape. The feet are worn and at uneven lengths, but the chair has been leveled. ... moreIt is strong and sturdy and can easily still perform its intended function. It stands approximately 34.5" high, and the seat is approximately 19.5" wide. The bottom of the chair is branded MQUINCEY but I have not been able to find any information on this maker.

Who was married 11/9/1831 in Hardwick, Mass. to Charlotte Watson Adams(of President Adams Family) Luther's father was Phinehas Wetherbee born 02/27/1770, Brookfield, Mass. married to Lydia_ born 05/02/1770. Luther Billings Wetherbee was a highly prosperous farmer from Hardwick, Mass. who moved to Illinois in 1837. Luther's son Edwin Cheney Wetherbee was born 04/29/1842 in Sterling, IL he was married on 03/04/1868 to Hannah Eckles(sister of Charles Eckles who served in the Civil War as a Sargent promoted to Captain, State Senate/State ... moreCongress as well as being a Farmer) Edwin served a 100 day service duty. He called himself"A Down East Yankee" He attended Poughkeepsie Business School. He worked in his youth as for a Chair Factory in the East which is probably why he inherited the chair. After Edwin's death the chair when to Hannah. Hannah passed them on to her nephew Walter Eckles and onto his daughter. I am the current owner. After Edwin and Hannah were married they moved onto a farm in Marshall Co. where I live) in the Vienna Township(present day Beaman, IA) I will send PDF's of the full version with the chair. I don't want to type all of the pages out. This gives you an idea of the history. The only part that I am not sure of is which Whitney made them. John Whitney of W.F. Whitney Company or Jonathan Whitney(he seems like the one since he was producing chairs even before he founded his company) I have contacted several places with books on their marks. Extremely Rare Pennsylvania Antique 1760 - 1780 Fan Back Windsor Side Chair WOW!
STARTING THIS VERY LOW. WITH NO RESERVE, EVEN THE BUY IT NOW IS LOW. Just purchased from a local estate. This chair was made in Pennsylvania perhaps Lancaster circa. 1760-80 and is structurally original with nicely carved ears. Early turnings and a comfortable saddle seat. For a similar example, see Charles Santore's"The Windsor Style in America" p. 83. Most Windsors were painted when made. And in modern times it became fashionable to remove the paint such as was done with this example. The seat has been reenforced with a block underneath. With wear to the front of the seat. And expected usage wear marks, but overall a very nice example of an early Windsor chair. Look at the dramatic upswing of the crest leading to the beautiful carved ears. And the nice details such as the shallow carved channel that outlines the spindle area ... moreon the seat. With bold turnings to the legs, the H stretcher, and the styles. It also exhibits a shield shape seat with a saddle peak at front. Evidence of paint history in crevices. A little over 16" seat height. A little over 16" seat deep. 16 3/4" wide seat. 35 1/2" to top of crest rail X 22 1/2" wide. The distinguishing feature of the fan back Windsor is its decoratively turned stiles. The two main uprights which form the back. The stiles angle outward on most examples, as do the spindles, forming a fan like appearance. The top of the back is formed with a bent crest. The ends of which are often carved in a spiral pattern known as a volute, although many were not carved at all. The fan back arm chair bears a striking resemblance to the comb back. And some confuse the two. Again, the fan back has its characteristic stiles, while the comb back does not. Fan back side chair seats were most often of the shield type. Though the oval was sometimes used. Conversely, arm chair seats were mostly oval, sometimes nearly round, with the shield seat used less commonly. Antique primitive old pine Nichols & Stone Windsor rocking chair

Up for sale is this great childrens Windsor chair.Has all the sme detailing as a large chair. As long as I can remember the chair sat in my parents parlor. Welcoming all little visitors to rest their weary bones.I am 71 and Dad and mom passed a number of years ago at 99 and 97. This lovely piece has the arched back rail from bent wood NO SPLITS! The 4 turned rails are quite ornate and lovely. The One piece 1in. think seat measures 13in. square with curved corners. NO CRACKS To seat. The 4 legs have been turned to have a nice design to them.The piece measures 28inches high by 14inches seat to floor. This is a vintage wood 14 1/4" spindle Windsor chair/ salesman sample( doll chair. The chair is approximately 14 1/4" at highest point- seat is 6 1/2" wide by 5" deep. Circa 1770s Oliver Goldsmith-type Comb Back Windsor Side Chair, Armchair
Here is a circa 1770s-1790s antique Windsor chair. Alternately described as an armchair or side chair. It is 24" wide at the arms, 22-1/2" deep and 38" high. The D-shape seat plank is 16-1/2" wide x 17' deep and 2" thick. Chairs of this style are commonly referred to as Oliver Goldsmith Windsors. Its origin is most likely Pennsylvania, possibly Philadelphia. Somes vestiges of its original green milk paint remain on the underside. Much of its black re-paint has worn away. leaving bare wood exposed. If one wishes to do so, it could easily be given a fresh coat of paint. This chair had previously been listed on eBay using information gleaned from an early 1900s Windsor guide. During the course of the listing. Hello and welcome to my auction listing. You are viewing a beautiful vintage Windsor chair hand crafted by the River Bend Chair Company of Westchester. Ohio. This is a salesman sample and was not created as doll furniture, yet it certainly may be used for this purpose. The intent of this item's creation is to accurately depict the craftsmanship, fit, and finish of the fine furniture crafted by this manufacturer. As intended, this item was finished with several layers of paint to give it a crackle finish, followed by antiquing it further to show wear and subsequently add to its antique appeal. Antique Oak Windsor Childs Chair Leather Brass 1900s
This Child's antique Oak Windsor chair has a unique feature to it. The seat is covered with a piece of brown leather. I doubt it was there from new. However this leather is very old. Perhaps it was placed on the seat to make it a little more comfortable sitting. Whatever the case might be. It was well done work. The leather is attached with tiny Brass tacks. The tacks are all tight. A few of them have developed a nice patina to them which can b removed if desired. The wood has developed a rich patina. And is in very good condition, I note only one small rough spot on the left side of the bow. I posted a pic of it. It appears the wood has a tiny split on the bow, however it is not going anywhere, as meaning it is solid and is not on the verge of breaking or anything of that sort. All joints are tight. It is a very nice piece of furniture ... morethat has survived the passage of time. It measures approx. from floor to seat measured in the front is 10 inches. AN EXTREMELY RARE 18TH CENTURY CONNECTICUT WINDSOR FAN BACK SIDE CHAIR WITH 7 TURNED BULBOUS SPINDLES. TWO FINELY TURNED SUPPORTS AND A FINE HAND HEWN SHAPED FAN BACK CREST. IT HAS THE ABSOLUTE BEST CARVED HAND HEWN SADDLE SEAT WITH SPLAYED DEEP CUT BULBOUS TURNED LEGS IN AN OLD 19TH REFINISHED SURFACE WITH TRACES OF THE ORIGINAL RED AND LATER BLACK. Eastern Connecticut. This is a very nice Whitney Windsor chair. The chair is in very good structurally sound condition for it's age with normal wear. There is one small crack in the wood on the side of the seat but it appears to be a surface crack and does not effect the function of the chair. The rushing is in very good condition. All of the spindles and legs are tight. The chair is 36.5"t x 16.5" w(at widest point of the seat) and 20" deep with the seat 18" from the floor. What You Get A wooden rocking chair with tapered spindle back and turned spindles for legs and arm rest. The runners are narrow/vertical. The finish is a reddish cherry. This is about 14-12" from bottom of runner to top of seat back. The seat back is almost 10" in height and about 9-1/4" wide at the top rail and tapers to seat that is 7" at widest point at the front and is about 5-1/2" deep. The sitting area is about 5" wide and the top of the seat is about 5" from the floor. The runners are 9-1/2" long and about 6-1/4" apart. True windsor arm chairs are difficult to find, let alone a arm chair in 100% original surface. We are most certain the paint on this chair is original and untouched since Circa 1825. The butterfly has a stylised painted"N" in the back, most likely the initial of the last name of the original owner. We are confident you'll love this chair as much as we do! It is very comfortable to set in. And is very sturdy. Attributed to the Philadelphia School of windsor chair makers. Nicely shaped seat. Wonderfully shaped and painted butterfly back. Primitive Antique Windsor Side Chair - Timeless Classic Design
All I know for sure about this chair is it very old and came from an estate full of nothing but fine objects and furniture. I estimate it was constructed in the 1830's but am not certain. The construction is primitive and there does not appear to be any repairs. I have no idea if the finish is original but I doubt it considering the age. The chair is sturdy and still very functional but some of the joints are a little loose. This is an easy fix with wood glue. Injection needle, and clamps but I have decided not to do it myself due to the antique nature of the piece. If you like the chair but only want if I make it rock solid, please let me know. This effort only takes about an hour if you know what you are doing. Dimensions are 16" wide back, 15" wide seat, 17" tall seat, 33" tall back, 19" deep overall.
