The mark used was the wheel mark and later the wheel mark with the electoral crown above it. Melchior was the most famous of the designers of figurines. After a fairly short existence. Edward Wormley Settee Needs Restoration
Here we have an Edward Wormley Dunbar settee. It measures 55" long. 32.5" front to back, and 28" tall. The seat is 47" wide. 24" deep, and 15.5" high. The upholstery is not original and has some cat scratch damage on the right corner(see close-up picture) The foam in the loose seat cushion has deteriorated. It is very sturdy and the legs are in original. Excellent condition. Ships via Greyhound bus to the the lower 48 United States. Rare American Federal Black and Gilt Painted Fourteen-Leg Settee Late Sheraton. C. 1820-40 Item# 130204KNI21 This is a very fine Rare American Painted Bench or Settee with Six-Chairbacks over Fourteen Legs. A Late Federal work of art in the Sheraton taste, probably c. 1820-40. The design, particularly in the legs, closely conforms to the sentiments of Hitchcock chair designs(c. 1825-50) of the earliest form- the artisan of this bench elevates the form quite drastically with the intense ribbing of the bamboo-style legs and stiles. The canted back features rail-and-ball horizontal spindles over conforming arms flanking a deep and comfortable Rush seat[replaced] The fragility of the form is eliminated with careful attention to pressure points, this work supported with doubled front-to-back stretcher systems in the legs, double-spindle stretchers ... morein the medial of the arms and six spindles per chair back. The settee rests over fourteen legs. Each carefully carved with olive-green highlights in it's precise ring turnings, the legs each terminating in tiny ball toes- the right and leftmost legs flare slightly outward, removing the stoic aesthetic of what could otherwise remain too square to be visually refined. Preserved in unusually fine condition. This is a treasure of early Americana. Forms like this would typically grace a long hallway, entranceway or the landing of a second story. WOW- WHAT AN ESTATE FIND and what a BARGAIN As the pictures show. Both of these originals are matching. I have determined that they are indeed Rosewood with certain areas appearing to have the Rosewood laminated over some type of pine( or fir( and yet with other areas solid. I expect that both were reupholstered and I assume the construction was tightened up at that time. Settee is sturdy, very little damage but does have an area on the left rear leg that has had metal bolts( added for support. I can't see up under the protective material, just noticed the heads(visible in 1 photograph) This really doesn't take away AT ALL from the visual and as stated, the Settee is STURDY. The chair on the other hand has been poorly repaired and is weak and nearly useless except for display. It could be repaired correctly with the hands of a skilled ... morewoodworker. This 19th century sofa/ settee is just gorgeous and so uniquely crafted.definitely not your typical Victorian find! This sofa/settee features gorgeous walnut and burl walnut. Incised carvings, fancy carved crest at the center, carved draped scrolls, ring turned front legs and tapered back legs with casters intact on all four feet. This sofa/ settee measures 44 3/4 inches in height from the floor to the top of the carved crest at the back. A total length of 69 inches, seat width of 56 inches, seat depth of 20 inches and seat height of 18 inches and this settee/ sofa weighs approximately 85 lbs. The vintage black background floral fabric is in excellent vintage condition with no issues we can find and offers matching ... morecovered cord trim. This settee/ sofa is tight and sturdy and offers elegant seating. The back(sides up under the padded rests) do show some age shrinkage at the joints which which is common with pieces of this age.
