For your consideration, this fabulous and very impressive Tall Victorian Rococo Flame Mahogany Secretary with Arched Bookcase ... moreTop(Circa: 1860) This gorgeous two-piece Secretary weighs approximately 170 pounds and measures 102 ½” in total height(from the floor to the arched top of the crown) 44 ¼” in width, and 20 ½” in depth. The three adjustable shelves each measure 9” in depth and 41 ¼” in width. This is truly one of the most beautiful Victorian Secretaries of its kind that we have had the privilege to offer. You will notice that there is some faint writing on the back of the piece(see the e-Bay photo) that probably indicates either the maker or the person for whom the piece was made. From what we can see it is signed M. Hall, Hannibal, MO. The details on this Secretary are absolutely wonderful! This beautiful Secretary is constructed of mahogany. And flame mahogany over a secondary wood and the details are exquisite! The bookcase top is graced with a beautiful open arch top with a lovely center foliate carved pedestal that is surrounded on each side with elegant applied scroll land leaf adornments. The bookcase top doors have wavy glass that appears to be original. And three adjustable shelves. The doors have arched tops with picture frame moulding around the original glass and carved foliate escutcheons. The right door has an intact lock and a decorative(non-working) key is included to assist in opening the doors. Also. You will note that there is a small, insignificant scratch on glass in the lower corner of the right door which in no way impacts the beauty or integrity of the original wavy glass. The bottom slant front desk door of the Secretary is graced with luscious flame mahogany veneer, has a fancy brass key escutcheon along with an intact lock with working key. It is hand hewn solid wood, very thick for todays standards. It was manufactured by the George M. Hammer Co. Ltd. in Strand London in the late 1800's or possibly the VERY early 1900's. They were builders of church and school furniture in England. It still has the brass ink well cover as shown in the pictures and also still has the porcelain casters. The desk part slide in and out for comfort and fit. The bas is 34" long, 11" wide in the front and 14" wide in the back. The desk section measures 22" long, 19" wide, 10" tall in the back and 6" tall in the front. It is 38" tall in the back. It is missing one small wood brace as shown in the pictures. I have had a lot of school desks over the years but this is by far the most unique and rare I have ever found.

I have up for sale a very nice vintage/ antique circa 1870s- 1890s smaller size Hand Carved Wood Traveling Secretary Lap Writing Desk. It measures approx 13-5/8" long. 9-1/2" deep,and 3" high on the back section. The top lid folds down to reveal a writing surface, still has the old velvet, the ribbon is a recent replacement of course. Under this is a storage area for papers or documents. The top section folds up, for a storage area for pens, inkwells and accessories. I am not sure if this is Black Forest but it does have very nice hand carved designs- the top panel has leaves.Vines,and either berries or grapes. The back portion is hinged and lifts up to reveal an area for pens and possibly for inkwells or whatever. Unique 17th Century French Secretary Drop Front Desk
What's the difference between an antique and a treasure? This is a museum quality piece of furniture with an amazing history! Comes from a Chateau in France that was built in 1316. This beautiful desk is at least 400 years old and survived a laceration from the Nazi's that confiscated the Chateau during World War II. This unique desk has a slant front with a beautiful marquetry floral design on the front. The wood appears to be walnut with several different fruit woods as a veneer. There are six drawers in the interior and a shelf above them for storage. There is a secret compartment in the center and locks within the secret area to lock the two drawers in front. This appears to be a solid teak military style portable secretary box made for writing and keeping important papers. The four corners are brass bound and there are sturdy brass handles on the two sides like the old military style secretaries from the 1830s which this resembles. I do not believe this was a copy as it has been used as a desk. But rather a 20th century portable desk that actually served that purpose. Secretarys from the 1830s are going for thousands of dollars now. The inside is pristine and flawless. There is a writing surface that lifts up to reveal a lift out tray. In the lid of the secretary are places to put the papers you are working on. The lock is solid and in perfect working condition and comes with a brass key.
