It was likely made in the early 1900's. Made of oak. And has a spooncarved front. There are no identifying markings. It is in excellent shape and it has the original finish. Brass fittings show a bit of tarnish but should clean up easily with a little TLC. Three of the posts on the brass rail at the top are loose but can be easily secured with a little bit of attention. One of the rail ends is stripped so that will need to be secured as well. Otherwise this piece is ready for your home. I would be happy to provide more detailed photos if requested. I hate to part with such a beautiful and unique item but we no longer have the room and it just doesn't fit our decor. The dimensions are 40 1/2” tall its tallest point. 33 1/2“ wide at its widest point at the base, and 19” deep when closed,and 34“ deep when opened. Local pickup only.

The writing surface is covered in black felt and pulls out to provide a larger area. There is a large overhanging drawer as well as two smaller drawers and a cabinet below, for even more storage. All of the drawers have brass pulls and escutcheons and dovetail joints. The lower area is spoon carved in a charming leaf pattern. This piece most likely dates from the late 1800's. This piece is in good condition. But does have some cosmetic flaws, as is to be expected in a piece of this age. Several of the escutcheons are missing as well as the door pulls on the upper cabinet. The drawer pulls are loose as well and one of the escutcheons looks like it has been reattached. There is a piece of wood missing from the molding below the desk top as well. See picture) There is also significant wear to the felted writing surface. No other significant damage or repairs. The entire desk stands about 88" 7'4" tall. I am not sure of the purchase price. The age, or the wood type. The stain is a chestnut color. The desk are two parts. The approximate dimensions of the lower secretary desk part are 36 inches tall, 34.5 inches wide, 19 inches deep. The approximate dimensions of the upper bookshelf part are 33 inches tall. 32 inches wide at the bottom(where it rest on the secretary desk) and 36.5 inches tall(from the top moulding trim) 11.5 inches deep. The drawers have dovetail construction and all four drawers open and close fully. The handles. Hinges, and hardware appear to be brass(not positive of the material) One of the eight handles came out of the hinge socket. I have the handle ... moreloose so it can be reattached and repaired. The bookshelf unit has a glass front. The glass is in good shape with some sticker residue which needs to be cleaned. The very top of the bookshelf has a circular mark which appears to be where the previous owner(s) kept a plant. On the fold down writing desk there is a small chip in the wood on the left hand corner. There are four holes on top of the secretary desk where the bookcase is attached also there are scratches and wear from the bookcase rests(these are not visible when the desk is attached) The back has rough unfinished wood showing. You are bidding on a very beautiful solid oak drop front ladies writing desk that reminds me of a very fancy Larkin Style Desk. There is a mohogany desk similar to this one with all the heavy brass detailing. It is made by the Paine Company. I believe it says on their label. My desk has the original golden oak finish. It is in very good condition for its age, minor wear& tear. All the brass decoration is original. There is lots of hand carving and also applied carvings. It has a book shelf at the bottom. There is a beautiful oval bevel mirror on the backsplash. The inside of the desk has a grand writing surface and lots of pigeon or cubby holes for extra stuff. Cherry Antique 1790 Period New England Secretary Desk. Hand crafted of solid cherry about 1790 in New England. This secretary desk is a classic. The finish is very well preserved with warm antique patina, waxed and buffed, it needs only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth to maintain its luster. Graduated drawers have original chamfered bottoms and hand cut dovetails. Brasses are old but not original on this authentic Federal period furniture. On the top. Hand cut dovetail joinery is visible. Drawer dividers are mortised into the side planks of cherry. The hand planed back still has some rose cut hand made nails. Feet have been rebuilt many years ago, and there are restorations around the hinges and above the lid. The key is a handle only, the drop front lock does not work. Originally crafted during the last quarter of the 18th Century and altered during the first quarter of the 20th Century. It was probably a more plain version of the rather fine piece we see today. Altered to suit the appetite for high-style pieces during the first quarter of the 20th Century. Crafted of mahogany veneers with pine and oak secondaries, the case features two over three graduated drawers with replaced brasses over bold oversized bracket feet. Federal Hepplewhite 1790 Secretary Desk. Dating from the Federal or Hepplewhite period about 1790. This hand crafted secretary desk is elegant and well preserved. Mahogany with inlaid satinwood banding, the finish is very fine with a few mars and wear at the edges. Remarkably good for its age, this furniture has warm antique patina. Sometimes called a"butler's" desk because they were used by the head butler for household accounts and records. This desk was used with a stool or standing. Looking like a chest of drawers. It is only when the top drawer is opened, the release buttons are pressed and the front tilts forward that it appears as a desk. This listing is for a Fantastic Chippendale Style walnut( I think and am not 100% sure) and fancily veneered vintage Drop Front Secretary Desk with Ball and claw Feet and shell style carvings. 36 inches in overall height. About 16 inches overall depth at widest point of legs and 22 inches overall width again at widest point of legs. Brass lock and hardware but no key. Brass hinges and other hardware. Exotic veneer work. Two drawers. With hardware on one drawer broken and missing in part. Should not be very tough to find replacement hardware. I might be able to assist the buyer in doing so. Drop down door reveals a writing surface roughly 19 inches wide and 14 inches in depth with two drawers and 5 compartments worked in the back. Very elegant. Most definitely made by one of better furniture makers. Spray Stamped"546 Desk" in black ... moreon the underside. Manufacturer unknown. In Great vintage condition.There is a small chip on the back corner, approx 3/8 of an inch, that is not noticeable to the naked eye. there are few very small surface scuffs here and there, maybe 10 to 12 at maximum none bigger then 1 or 2 mm by2to4mm all of which should be easily touched up to an invisible. When desk is closed there appears to be what looks like a surface burn mark which I am not sure if it actually is a surface burn mark or part of the grain as no damage can be observed under magnification. Pre Civil War Walnut Slant Top Secretary Desk
Very Nice. Beautiful wood grain. Walnut slant top desk. A narrow secretary with small rectangular(ten) pigeon holes over a wide slanted top with butterfly hinges opening to a large interior within the lower portion of the desk. Ring baluster and block turned legs. Square head nails about 1 1/4 inches long. Brass locking mechanism for lid- no key. This desk was badly damaged during a move and lovingly peiced back together. One leg very badly damaged shows glued peices. see photo six) Many nails had to be replaced. The original nails that could be used were used and not replaced. The desk is very sturdy and stands 50" H. 32" L 27" W. There are some dings and gouges which is to be expected for this peice that was made in the first half of the 1800's. Maker i do not know, quality of horner but is not likely his work, is as well constructed and remains in that condition after 120 years of service. there are no loose or wobbly screws or holes. the hardware is all original and perfect. it has all original locks that are all tight and just like the day they were installed. it has the original keys and all the locks lock and work perfectly. when the door is shut there is not crack or room between the door and frame large enough to allow a razor blade to slide into. the same way with the drawers, drop front and top drawer which is spectacular and boast a serpentine curve. this piece is as solid and tight as any i have ever owned and the correctness and tightness would lead one ... moreto believe it was made yesterday. not really, they do not make stuff in this day and time that remotely compares to antique furniture. most secretary desks, there are some gaps in the bookcase door, usually wobbly hinges, drop front loose, drawers flopping here and there. you can shut most of them up but they have issues. anyway, construction is perfect, solid, quality material, and workmanship. who ever made it was a triple A firm. on the back there is a paper label that has spaces for the no. of the item, the finish, who did the cabinet work, filling, rubbing, polishing, trimming, and packing. these areas have been penciled in, but the wording has faded beyond ascertainment. there is also a label that has willick bros, muncating? somewhere. can't make that out either. the piece also has incised inventory numbers in the boards feature only used by the highest quality furniture makers. it also has stamped inventory nos. here and there. are you bored yet? now for the piece itself. so well done. pierced carved,very very well done griffins on each corner of the top crest. great solid tight sconce in the center held up by a wonderful turned column, all fitting perfectly and as

for sale is a very large and useful piece of antique furniture. this is a double secretary bookcase side by side desk. it has many wonderful features including galleries. Carvings, doors, drawers, drop front writing surface, a bank of cubbies, beveled center mirror just to mention a few. note the outside column of the door frame is part of the door and moves as the door moves. it has 4 shelves on each side. i have one out to allow a large porcelain romeo and juliet statue to sit. it has a lot of storage for whatever, i put porcelain in most of my pieces, but it would hold a bunch of books also. it is in near mint condition structure wise. it is quite heavy and is in three pieces which i have pictured. i had to move it out of a down stairs room i am converting to a bedroom. i have gotten too old or too lazy to climb the steps. at any rate, ... morei unloaded it and moved it to another room that really is not a good fit for it at all so i am going to try to sell it. the three sections go together and are held in place by dowels. you then attach screws from the inside of either outside cabinet to secure it to the center section. primarily the screws are just to keep the dowels from pulling out of the piece they slip into. it is large and heavy, it a bit over 62 inches wide, 17 inches deep, and 73 inches tall. it has a tyler desk or tyler cabinet co. st. louis, mo. paper label on it when i bought it about 8 years ago. the label was barely hanging on so i took it off and kept it. at this junction however, i do not know what i did with it. i know i have it but have not looked at the right spot yet. i paid 42000 for it like nearly 8 years ago, could have been longer. ihave several pieces displaced and need to dispose of them so i am starting this great piece at 1000 less than i paid. if you note the joints in drawer i pictured you can see they are dowel joints, so i expect it was made prior to 1890, after that time they did factory dovetail. pictures are bad and sorry about the dusk, didn't get the top wiped off i see. it m

The brass escutcheons, while quite attractive, no longer house functioning locks. Each side has developed a separation in the mahogany as part of the wood's natural aging process; these age separations are purely cosmetic and don't affect the structural integrity of the piece. During a past restoration, a line of black stain was applied to these separations to complement the actual dark inlay around the bottom. The fall has also become uneven over the years and has sustained some wear to the corners but remains, like the rest of this piece, very sturdy. Finally there are a number of minor wear marks and the back feet were also replaced during the restoration. Overall this antique bureau remains in very good condition and would make a fine addition to any home or office furniture collection! This gorgeous mahogany bureau was hand-crafted in Victorian England around the year 1860. This bureau contains plenty of storage space. The sides look great.
