This is from the Peabody Seating Company/ North Manchester. Indiana. On the bottom it is also stamped with these numbers: 7-31-61-6. I looked up the company and it said they were making school desks as early as 1905. I don't know the correct year on this desk, but I contacted the North Manchester Historical Society to try and find out, they will let me know. This desk is in pretty good shape. This is one really cool piece of history! There are ink wells and pencil cutouts for seven people/employees. It is straight on one side and curved on the other side. See the pics as to how I squared it up on a trailer to best show the curvature. It is 138" long by 88" on the curved side. I am not certain if this was used as a school desk. This is a very nice antique maple child's school desk with cast iron legs. It was probably made in the late 1800's and features an ink well and pencil slot on top. The cast iron has very nice scroll work and is marked A.H. Andrews Buffalo. New York. The bench has alternating colored slats giving it a very attractive look. The cast iron had been painted at some point. It is in excellent condition given it's age. However, there are two separate cracks on the top. They look like they have been there for some time. My uncle was a great gatherer of items. Many of which came from stoves. I have started going through these items and will be posting some. There is a lot of great rust in this pile! These are a pair of fancy design cast iron bases for a school house desk. They are embossed with the maker AM Andrews Co Chicago, also a patent no. of 641061, I am not exactly sure how this was set up, but there is a piece on each that has a bolt and folds over, creating an"L" for the seat portion to sit on, at the top portion there are small notches where, I believe the top hooked in. These are very nice and with some creativity could be made into a number of very cool things. They measure 29" across and are 29.5" tall, the base part(feet) 19" from foot to foot. It is a traditional, free standing, desk measuring 27ins( 69 cms) wide x 1 9 ins(49cms) deep x 32ins( 81 cms) at its highest at the back. And is constructed with slightly tapering legs with a square sectioned top box, having an angled front surface, a flat topped back edge and a hinged lid. Internally it is plain with some delightful arched pidgeon holes. In a row, at the back. There was once a lock and key but this has long since disappeared and the blank keyhole is now plugged with a piece of wood. The hinges are solid and sound. It ia made from solid pine with what I think aere beech legs. The wood is rot and worm free but has lots scarring and the legs ... moreare part stained and have some gaps in them. The entire leg assembly. With the valance boards, has been removed, dismantled, cleaned and then reglued and rescrewed to make sure that the whole thing doesn't wobble resulting in a very stable and solid desk, all finished with an antique wax. It is an attractive and charming desk that has clearly had a long and hard life! It has the inevitable myriad of scars. Dents, dinks, holes, splits and so on, but nothing threatening and all very characterful, including a missing section from the far left hand side internal pidgeon hole, the obvious but not moving split on the front top and some iffy knots here and there and so on. Shepherd's Improved Desk Slate This primitive child's school desk slate measures 10 1/2" x 7 3/4" The angled design goes from 3/4" high in the front to 2" high in the back for ease of writing. The sliding wooden top is covered with the original advertisement that reads: Shepherd's Improved Desk Slate New Combination of Slates Patented June 29th. 1875 and patent applied for This desk contains 22 copies in Arithmetic and Drawing C.C. Shepherd, New York The bottom of the Desk Slate is where the actual slate is for drawing. And the slate also forms the inside of the'desk. Inside are some of the original drawing examples on fragile brown paper, including a deer, sheep, goats and alphabet letters. There are also farm animal heads on the back of the slate to practic drawing. Unfortunately the wooden cover has ... morea crack and it's also warped. Turn of the Century Cast Iron School Desk - Minneapolis O & SF, Co - Great Shape
I came across this beautiful vintage school desk at a local auction and couldn't pass it up. I have seen similar designed desks sell on ebay but believe this one to be rarer because it has these cast iron baskets where the seat fold into. This contrasts to many of the ones selling on ebay that have the U shaped cut out to accept the seat. This desk was manufactured by the Minneapols Office and School Furniture Co. According to my research. The company was in business from 1895 until 1920. Also, this desk is much smaller than most other turn of the century shcoll desks up for sale. Most desks measure 28" tall whereas this desk must have been for kindergarten or first grade because it only measures 22" tall. I have included many measurments below for your reference.
