Decorative crest( lion and horse) on 2 sides of iron.photos 3.6,9 and 10) Possibly from a house of noblity- not sure of its providence. 10" wide- 6" high and 7 1/2" wide. Box is iron and has an iron tray inside to hold coals. Also has vents so heat can be released. Trimmed with 3 wood panels and wood on handle. Photos 2.4& 7) The servant in the household would put coals in body of container- lift the covers. From the bed and move the warmer around quickly and pull covers over quickly to keep heat it. Victorian WROUGHT IRON and BRASS BED -- Beautiful -- FULL size
This is an original Victorian iron and brass bed. Not a reproduction. It is very sturdy and in excellent condition. And did I mention beautiful? I have seen few beds like this with the amount of brass railing this bed bears on both head and footboard. When polished up the brass is just gorgeous! The bed is currently painted white but may be stripped down to the metal. There are no slats. It was made to hold a metal spring unit. Now mssing. To replace this we have used 1/2 inch thick birch plywood, since ths is usually 4 feet wide,you will have two pieces if you use the plywood with the grain going crossways. A block of wood screwed under the side rails, hugging the rail, will hold the plywood tightly in position. We have had little children jump all over this bed with no problems at all! Some people attach the head and foot boards to an existing ... moremetal frame with heavy steel wire or other devices. It wil hold a standard FULL size mattress. Not a queen mattress. Condition is great; there is a slight sign of rust near the ends of the rails. It can be removed with coarse steel wool and sealed. The rust is on the surface and does not go through. On the footboard there is a missing brass spool right in the center. Please compare the photos of the headboard with the footboard) No one has ever noticed it. We have the missing piece and will send it to you with the bed, it needs to be reattached by an auto body shop. We never bothered. Shipping if applicabe will be by UPS. I can manage to get the bed to the local UPS store on a weekend ad I will take it down there just once. I do not know the cost but the bed is large and heavy. I cannot give even an idea until it is boxed and I have the shipping address. We stopped at a farm sale where 2 generations of family were finally liquidating all of the barn and storage shed pieces that had accumulated over the years. We found this beauty in an empty grain bin. The cast iron frame holder had been previously welded and shows a crack but when we put it together. It was still very sturdy. Resembling a garden gate. This bed has a scrolling headboard entwined with a symmetry of delicately wrought vines and leafy tendrils, finished in verdi green. It is a one-of-a-kind piece that incorporates some very challenging technical details. Most impressive are the main vines. As they are each one long piece which weave in and out of the scrolls. To accomplish this required successive heating, bending and shaping, as well as the enormous skill of a master blacksmith. The bed was designed and constructed in 1995.
