What it revealed itself to be was certainly ... moreenlightening. For concealed between a thin layer of cedar veneer. An even thinner layer of decorative fascia veneer, and a 3/4" thick top strip of cedar running horizontally along the edge was in fact a huge sheet of PARTICLE BOARD! Prior to this rather cleverly deceitful method of increasing a company's profit with the use of inferior material under the guise of quality woods. There used to be a disclaimer attached to such pieces as this LANE'VIRGINIA MAID' CEDAR CHEST This disclaimer identifies the products used in the construction of furniture. And on the inside of the lid it says: 70% MADE OF 3/4" RED CEDAR PANELS(JUNIPERUS VIRGINIANA) So this isn't one of those particle board pieces. It is almost all solid wood except the veneers on the front and top, and the decorative base. ART DECO STYLE The blotchy areas are just where varnish remains-almost all of the varnish has totally disappeared. Leaving a raw piece with just those blotchy areas mentioned-the piece is almost immaculate condition otherwise. Up for auction is a very beautiful Swedish bridal chest with painted decorations dated 1799. According to the Gothenburg auction house in Sweden. Where it was purchased, there is no reason to doubt that the dating is accurate. This is a Cedar Hope Chest manufactured by the famous Lane Furniture company. It has a full cedar interior and fold down shelf with felt bottom. The exterior has faux draws with handles. I inherited this hope chest from my mother and it’s at least 53 years old. I can’t use it as I don’t have the room. It’s in good condition but there’s some cosmetic issues I think could easily and cheaply be fixed making it perfect. The inside dimensions are 15-1/4” H x 15-1/2” W x 44-3/8” L. The divided tray is 1-3/4” H x 7.5” W x 43” L. NOTE: THIS IS FOR LOCAL PICKUP ONLY! I have up for sale a very nice vintage original circa 1920s- 40s Cedar Chest. The chest is in very clean original condition! It measures approx 45-1/4" long. 20" deep, approx 19-1/2" tall which includes the 1" castor height. The chest is in Excellent Condition- nice clean original finish- strong& sturdy- has a flat top which would be strong enough to sit on- that is unless you are over 300 lbs then I would not advise it. Some normal light age wear as one would expect. The only damage to note is a fairly inconspicuous chip/ slivered off piece- located on the front lower right. Shown up close in pics 10& 12. This is not something that is very noticeable at all, the sliver was done many years back and it has been stained over and the only way you will notice it, is if you look upclose with scrutiny. There is some ... moreslight wear to the metal bands, but its very light- nothing serious. The hinge works perfectly and the little metal elbow for holding the top up, when opened,works just fine. I do not have the key for the lock and not sure if the lock works. Vintage Moderoma "Modern Hope Chest" with Tray
This is a beautiful chest dubbed the"Modern Hope Chest" for its day by the Franklin Shockey Company in North Carolina. I believe it was made in the 50's. As you can see from the photo the wood is beautifully done. I have seen one other but it did not have the shelf. They are designed to be waterproof and have a small compartment in the middle of the shelf for mothballs or other moth deterants. The interior is pristine and looks like it was never or barely used. The exterior is in great condition for its age with just a few nicks and one small piece of the stripe veneer missing. The trunk is 3' 5" long and 1' 4" wide. It stands 20" tall and 17" deep. Lovely. Vintage, Late 1940's or early 1950's, Lane Cedar Hope Chest. Chest measures approximately 47-1/4" wide, 22-3/4" tall and 18-1/2" in depth. The Chest is in the Art Deco Style. There is a top self which is divided in two parts with original green felt liner. The chest has the original paperwork included. The locks were repaired with a safety lock in September, 2013. New key and instruction sheet included. The underside of the chest has style number 2231, and serial# 846230. The inside of the chest is in good condition. The outside of the chest shows signs of age and has some scratches and wear, from being relocated a few times, but is in good condition for its age. The three rear hinges open and close well. I have children in the house so for safety reasons the lock assembly has been removed but it does come with the chest as well as the key. And is simple to reinstall. Here is an antique steamer trunk. Good condition for its age. Inside tray missing. Metal folding brace needs work. No keys(locks not functioning anyway) one leather handle ripped. Displays very nicely, good for blanket/pillow storage. Not sure what the ornate metal material is maybe copper or brass. Black spots on inside ARE NOT mold but rather rust on backside of rivets.
