He left high school to pursue ... morea variety of jobs, landing a short stint at a local paper, the Bronx News, drawing political cartoons. In 1923 he turned the experience into a job as an illustrator at the Abraham& Strauss department store. Inspired by a trip to the Paris Exhibition in 1925, Rohde began designing furniture and his early work was sold at Lord& Taylor. An exuberant modernist, his pieces gleaned simplicity and rationalism from Bauhaus design and a sense of form and ornamentation from Art Deco. He worked predominantly in Bakelite and chrome, the materials that made up the visual vocabulary of the period. Between 1927-28 Rohde designed the interiors for Avedon fashion stores. Where his wife was part of the advertising team. Heywood-Wakefield of Massachusetts began picking up his designs in 1930, with a bentwood chair being one of their most successful pieces. Restless for a more substantial opportunity, he went west to Grand Rapids, Michigan where companies like John Widdicomb and Herman Miller had turned the city into a hub of furniture design and manufacturing. Rohde attracted the interest of Herman Miller and began designing for them in 1931. The company had been making traditional pieces and historical reproductions and was close to bankruptcy when they accepted Rohde`s modern work in a last ditch attempt to stay afloat. Apparently the miracle they needed, Rohde convinced them that modernism was the reigning style and proved it with his designs for bedroom furniture shown at the 1933 Chicago World`s Fair. Fortified by their updated image, Herman Miller had Rohde design entire sets for living and dining rooms and began making plans to halt their production of traditional pieces. Rohde designed a popular line of modular office furniture for Herman Miller, and they would later reintroduce the bentwood chair he made for Heywood-Wakefield. He also acted as the Design Director fo

Herman Miller upholstered adjustable seating and backrest, typical wear on aluminum and plastic areas from use ~see pictures. Fabric has not been cleaned nor has the aluminum been polished. Here is a set of Herman Miller Arm Pads(right and left) that go on the Charles Eames designed Lounge Chair(ES670) The arms are made out of black leather and they are vintage from the late 50's or 60's. The arm pads are heavier than the current arm pads made today and they have the 2 threaded extensions on each arm. Which are shown in the photos. This is the way they were made in that era. The arms should also fit the later version chairs. The black leather on the arms is in very good condition which no damage, no rips. What a great way to make your chair look good again. Eames Shell Chair Herman Miller Zenith Plastics Rope Edge Gold
This auction is for a rare Gold colored Eames DAX shell chair molded by Zenith Plastics Co. in Gardena. California with a rope edge. 4 large black 2.5" Shock Mounts with original metal Washers and screws. DAX refers to: D" dining height. A" arm chair, and"X" on original X-base. Lot’s of fibers. No label. Vintage original“rubber booties” with some cracking of the rubber and. The X-base is the original black with oxidation in places, but over all has a nice patina—it has not been painted. It feature original rubber booties with some cracks in the rubber and rust in places. Condition is conservatively graded about a 2.5- 3 out of 5. There is some bleed through of the color of the aged epoxy that holds the shock mounts to the base that is visible on the seat as you view the chair from above. This is a very common occurrence ... moreparticularly with the early Zeniths in the lighter colors. There are no cracks or repairs in the chair and shock mounts are original to the chair and have not been repaired. The chair has not been waxed. Clear-coated, Penatroled” or refinished in any way. I have cleaned it with a mild solution of Dawn detergent and water and a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser pad. There is some discoloration on other parts or the top surface of the chair where the original fiberglas gel coat has worn away. There are also a few deep pits it the bottom of the chair that cold probably be cleaned with a more vigorous cleaning. The shell will also mount on an Eiffel base. Dowel, Cat’s Cradle, H" base, swivel office base or Rocker. You are bidding on a vintage item with age and wear. If you are looking for a newer item in mint condition this is not for you. Modernica makes very authentic reproductions of the original Zenith chairs, although not in all of the original colors nor with a the x-base. SHIPPING: Domestic is $75.00 via UPS. Eames LKR-1 vintage wire chair with cat’s cradle base Herman Miller
For your consideration is an Eames LKR-1 wire chair with cat’s cradle base. It is pre-1957 according to the Eames office website for it’s use of jute filling) with a 1 piece(the“1” in LKR-1) fabric pad in a 2-toned brown hopsack. The chair is 100% original and as originally configured. The wire chair and cat;s cradle base are free of any breaks or repairs and are in excellent condition with only minor paint loss on the bottom as expected where the chair sits on the floor—there were no feet or pads on cat’s cradle bases. The pad has some holes and pulled strands. But is otherwise in very good shape considering it’s age. The foam rubber is dried and powdery and the jute filling is lumpy and appears to be crumbly. I can not tell for sure the interior condition of the upholstery without completely disassembling the chair. This is a 50+ year-old ... morechair and a large portion of it’s value derives from the fact that it is original. Some repair might be possible by re-weaving the damaged portions of the seat cover, but It still displays very well, and some consider the imperfections add to it’s“patina” I have seen worse examples on display in museums and Eames exhibitions like the recent Ray Eames exhibit in Sacramento. This chair would not look out of place in museum, and therefore should be viewed more as a work of art or surviving example of classic mid-century modern design, than something to sit on! The original label on the bottom attributes the chair to the Herman Miller Furniture Company. 901 W. Washington Blvd. Venice, CA which was the address of the famed Eames Office. I will disassemble the base from the chair for shipping and carefully bubble wrap the base and chair and ship it in a double thickness corrugated box. LOCAL ST LOUIS PICK UP ONLY Really nice real leather. In rich chocolate color, and gorgeous light bent wood give this HOT Mid Century Lounger/lounge chair the look that tops off any period room. Material is real leather but piping/trim is vinyl. No tags, but our extensive research shows us that it is a Plycraft- an early model Plycraft when they were quite larger than the Herman Miller to avoid patent issues. Look up Plycraft vs Eames Herman Miller for more info. These do not have the base breakage problem of the HM 607. It is in good vintage condition. It needs 3 buttons replaced(2 on ottoman and one on chair) it has a few very small chips in the veneer wood edge- could be easily repaired, and general wear just from being so old-mostly on arms. Notice this one has the 5 legged atomic base on the chair- from the quality years. Swivels and ... morerocks perfect. Adjustable feet to level chair. Made well. It has been in clean storage and was just cleaned with leather cleaner and wood was polished. Screws aren't as noticeable in person- the flash caught them. Pics don't really show how cool and nice it is. Super comfy too. It looks great as it is right now if you don't want to restore it. It's a money maker or a personal treasure. I hate to see it go! This miniature coffee table faithfully follows Noguchi's design of a folding biomorphic base made of two mirror image walnut elements that support a triangular glass top that has rounded corners and a ground edge. The two base elements are joined with a metal pin. CONDITION: Mint in its original box and corrugated wrapping material. I doubt that this was ever displayed. The glass top is flawless. No scratches. This is a swag leg table with a light gray laminate top and an aluminum base. It stands about 21 1/2 inches tall. The top has a diameter of approximately 28 1/2 inches. The table can be leveled by turning/adjusting the feet. This cool. Minimalist design would look great in a midcentury modern decor. Identification This swag leg table was designed by George Nelson for Herman Miller. This table retains its original Herman Miller label beneath. Condition The table looks good overall. It has minor wear from use. There are a few very small nicks to the edge of the table top. 1983 Herman Miller Aluminum Group Swivel Chair Mid Century Modern Eames, Red
Very solid chair and everything works. Swivel, tension for back and wheels all are great. Fabric has no tears just normal wear and looks it's age. The seat batting need to be changed. It wouldn't take much, there is a zipper hidden on the lower back cushion to access it. I recently removed the filler and turned it backwards but it's uneven and I should have just left it as it was. I would recommend having an upholsterer do it, he may want to use memory foam or just new batting. Aluminum frame is very nice and just shows mormal finish patina wear. This is from 1983 as you can see on bottom stamp and# label. Has the Herman Miller logo on tag as well. Very comfortable chair and will last another 30 years with care. I will likely have to ship in 2 boxes. Seat part pulls straight up and off. Thanks for looking!

Herman Miller Charles Eames Side Chair (1)Elephant Hide Grey (no bases) chipped
Here is a Herman Miller Side Chair that were designed by Charles Eames. The shell is all original Herman Miller. They have the Herman Miller name moulded under the seat(see picture close-up) The original patent stickers at one point but have come off over the years of use. The shell is in good shape for their age, there is a chip and scuff mark. all the shockmounts are glued on tight. They have some color loss on the edges. I think is normal) Other than a simple wipe and removal of some 50+ year gum I did not touch these chairs. The shell have the wide shockmounts. Still a nice set to add to your collection!
