Antique English Oak Queen Anne Oval Drop Leaf Table Circa 1790's-1800 This great little antique English oak Queen Anne oval drop leaf table is in the period and is all pegged in construction. The diagonal legs swing out to support the leaves letting you to have both up. Only one up or both down. Folded down the width is 14 by 36 inches, with both leaves up it stretches out to 44 inches and for the age this table is in very good condition, I feel in the original finish, no breaks or visible repairs other than new glue blocks underneath at the corners. Each leaf is 19" so when the top is fully open it is 62" wide. I don't find any maker's mark or name on the table. Antique Drop-Leaf Side Table, Directoire Style, ca. 1840, Greyhound Inlay
This is a Directoire style drop-leaf table with a whippet or greyhound inlay on top. It has the square tapered legs and elegant design typical of the style and the wood inlays that are shared with Sheraton style furniture. The table is rosewood with poplar and mahogany inlays. The center of the table has an inlay of a sitting whippet or greyhound. The center board. Leaves and legs are all inlaid as well. The table stands 27 inches high and when the leaves are down it is about 25 x 8 inches. Each leaf when open adds about 14 inches to the width of the table top so that with both open the top of the table is about 25 x 35 inches. The inlays are in excellent condition-no missing pieces. And it is versatile as well as beautiful. With a height of 30" it can function as a dining table, a desk, a sofa table or even an end table. It can be compact(13" x 30" x 30"high in its closed position) or largish(30" x 42" x 30"high fully open. If you look at the last photo, you'll see how I used it next to a sofa in a very eclectic design. It was professionally refinished several years ago. And does show some signs of age, but overall is in beautiful condition with very minimal scratches or dings. Previous owner bought this piece at auction in Boston. It was sold to her as a 19th century child's doll table. Finish appears to be original. Top looks like oak based on the grain. The legs and base may be a secondary wood such as maple. I believe this was completely hand made by a skilled craftsman. Wear to bottom of legs consistent with age. One leg is ever so slightly shorter than the others. Finish appears to be original. There are some stains. Water stains and age cracks. I have not attempted to clean or polish the wood.
