I have researched and ... moreresearched it have only discovered the following info. The design is called Gold Leaf Lacquer. It has beautiful motifs of white roses and birds. I believe it is what was called a"Shoe Cabinet" or a"Foyer Cabinet" and was naturally intended for storing shoes in. I can't find any artist or designer marks. I don't know if it is Chinese or Japanese but I am fairly certain it is one or the other. It hast has that wonderful Asian flair about it! It stands at approximately 30" tall. It is approximately 23-1/4" wide. It is approximately 11-1/4" deep. It looks to be modeled after some Asian Dynasty but I have no idea for sure or if it is a reproduction or an original. I can tell you that it is unique. There is a little wear with some black lacquer having been chipped off in some places and faded in a few other places. The brass footing on the legs is a little dented. Please see photos. Such a fantastic piece! Please understand that an item this large is going to have to be sent UPS and it will not be cheap. Salem Massachusetts, in the manner of John Chipman(b. 1746-1819) It features solid Cuban Mahogany case, each side crafted of a single solid plank, through-dovetailed at the top and dovetailed at the bottom. The slant front lid features an original keyhole escutcheon over what appears to be the original brass lock, falling onto arms that slide out with brass knobs- one original, the left one replaced. The open writing surface is clean, with what appear to be two original brass hinges, though curious patching is noted below flaking each hinge. Above the writing surface is a collection of nine small drawers, the centermost shell carved, each with brass knobs, below which a gallery of six pigeon holes rest in perfect symmetry. The case has four graduated drawers. Each of which feature period bail pull brass hardware flanking a replaced lock with original brass keyhole escutcheon. The drawers are hand dovetailed front and back, the front dovetails hidden behind applied cockbead molding. The drawers are yellow pine secondaries, the bottom being deeply chamfered along the perimeter to rabbet into the frame. They slide easily in and out of the case over replaced drawer runners, the drawer dividers running into the sides behind a mahogany facade, effectively hiding what are probably dovetail joints. The back of the case has all original backboards, though many nails are replaced. The molded apron features a carved shell drop down medallion in the center that mirrors the design of the middle drawer. The case rests over scroll cut bracket feet, each with an incredible flowing design in the manner of John Chipman. We do not believe the desk was executed in the shop of John Chipman. Antique Hanging Corner Cupboard Make an offer! It doesn't hurt to try. Beautiful old hanging corner cupboard. Made of solid wood(not sure the type) with original finish. The cabinet is not too heavy so this maybe me a medium density wood. The top of the cabinet has 2 small pieces of wood that have been replaced. There must have been some significant damage at some point that needed to be repaired. Also. There is a very minor repair to the wood where the hinges of the door are attached. It looks as though someone swung the door open too fast and partially popped them at one point. This area has been repaired and is not really that noticeable unless you are looking for it. Hand carved doors and drawers with original handles still attached. One of the handles has broken off. But we still have the handle if you wanted to fix it. Top of the cupboard has a split in the wood- we covered it with photos and a cane runner. One leg at the back is missing- but this has not taken away from its functionality. American Federal Cupboard or Cabinet. Southern States, Probably Kentucky or Tennessee Early 19th Century c. 1820-40 Item# 130101QIP27 This is a striking piece in every regard. First and foremost. The sheer perfection found in the tight minimalistic landscape of this undistracted and restrained surface is unrivaled. Everything about the form is harmonious, the crown being distinctly angular and sharp, deep enough to cast a formidable shadow over the case while still remaining a small part of the form as a whole. The large case is cleanly divided into six parts by a craftsman clearly averse to using graduation in any portion of the piece. Using deeply chamfered panels set into rabbets in the through-tenon-mortise joined door frames, these opening easily over replaced brass hinges. Inside is a spacious shelved interior, again spaced at equal ... moreintervals with a large space for the bottommost shelf, avoiding the use of graduation. The effect is attractive, resulting in a stoic aesthetic so commonly associated with works of those states. On both left side doors. A tiny wooden catch is affixed to the inside of the door using a hand forged screw, allowing each of the doors to be locked shut; the opposite door has a small wooden knob external and a forged iron lock interior(absent on the lower door) the wooden knobs are likely purchased from a different shop or imported, as they appear to be of black walnut and the work of a skilled turner. They are, however, original to the piece and remain affixed with their original screws. The case is plain and devoid of embellishment. The sides single solid planks that stretch from the crest to the toe, the backboards vertically nailed in tight clean rows along both edges and the bottom. The crest is a separate piece screwed to the top of the case at equal intervals in deep wells. It is very difficult to make a well supported attribution to Tennessee; however, we feel fairly confident this piece originated in either Kentucky or Tennessee. The top measures 47 1/2" tall x almost 42 3/4" wide x almost 16 1/4" deep. It is a crackle cream color the glass has a couple pit s in it and is the antique wavy glass. The b ack is made from old bead board. The top does have a hole cut into the back to insert a n electric candle lamp to light up your prims. It also has a latch on the inside of the door. The latch on the outside of the doors does not close. The door will stay opened ajar. The bottom is made from pine and measures 18 1/4" deep x almost 31" tall x almost 39 3/4" wide. I made these butterflies from a multicolored fabric, filled each one with fiberfil, then gave each one a rusty wire for their antennae. The butterflies measure roughly 4-1/2" tall(not including antennae) and 4-1/4" wide. Each has been grubbied with coffee, vanilla and cinnamon. I confess. I don't know a whole lot about this piece. I found it an an old flea market in the middle of the Missouri Ozarks. I have researched and researched it have only discovered the following info. The design is called Gold Leaf Lacquer. It has beautiful motifs of white roses and birds. I believe it is what was called a"Shoe Cabinet" or a"Foyer Cabinet" and was naturally intended for storing shoes in. I can't find any artist or designer marks. I don't know if it is Chinese or Japanese but I am fairly certain it is one or the other. It hast has that wonderful Asian flair about it! It stands at approximately 30" tall. It is approximately 23-1/4" wide. It is approximately 11-1/4" deep. It looks to be modeled after some Asian Dynasty but I have no idea for sure or if it is a reproduction or an ... moreoriginal.
