Mid Century Modern credenza, buffet by Harvey Probber
This is a 1960’s mid century modern buffet or credenza attributed to be Harvey Probber and made by his company. As you can see by the photos it has a walnut case with six two-tone walnut doors. The door pulls are brass. The overall condition is very good. For being nearly 50 years old it has very light surface scratches. It looks like some one changed out the interior shelving to allow for a stereo system. Note the hole in the bottom of the base that allowed wires to run in and out of the case and the white vinyl siding in the center of the case. I left the vinyl in place. However, it can be easily removed. This jewel measures 25” tall. The depth is 19” and the length is 5’ 6” Please look at the photos carefully and don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions. This finely executed and high quality baroque two-door cabinet/ credenza is painted in cheerful golden yellow hues and festooned with hand painted floral rococo decorations. The original locking mechanism is non-functional. No key. There are condition issues, namely warping, chipping and cracking of the wood due to age and shrinkage. One foot is loose. Brutalist Danish Modern Credenza with Headboard or Backboard This may be a Paul Evans peice I am not sure. He has one that looks very similar with different finish. This is a very unusual find. I can not find one like on google images or mid century sites. Nice credenza with three drawers, two doors with a single shelf in each cabinet. Drawers glide effortlessly and doors work well, I will be installing a new hinge on the left door which I did not do before the photos. That is why it has an uneven gap in the photos. The counter surface and face to this piece are in very good condition, nearly without blemish. The corners and base have more wear, to them. The finish is in really good shape as well as the structure. The left side as a noticeable gouge though it will probably go unnoticed as it is near the wall and floor, the left stile has ... morea chip on top and the bottom, not too noticeable with the stain over them, the far right has a minor chip to the bottom corner, not noticeable, there is a chip to the top right corner also, again not very noticeable. These veneered pieces are notorious for snagging and chipping in these places. The base had some splintering from catching on the floor in the past. I have fixed any loose pieces so that damage won't get worse. Put a little stain on them which makes them blend it well. As a former custom cabinet maker and finisher. This would all go unnoticed to me until I looked harder at the piece. I would say that it does not detract from the general appearance of the piece at all even more so because the brutalist style breaks up the lines so much. The board behind the piece is a headboard I believe. I set it up on the credenza for display and it is fitting there. You may have other preferences. It worked well for the photo though. This is in good shape with one screw hole on the top left corner. I know how it is to buy over a computer and I like to feel.
