We lightly rubbed with old english almond oil but it may need further attention. Looks like brass hardware and the front closing hardware has leaf designs(see photo) The top looks to be a hand carved scene of some sort of wheat or long grass with a group of birds in the distance, very cool looking. Interior has a sliding box in the upper and is all made of cedar. No major chips or cracks. The dimensions are 31" wide by 18 1/2" deep and it stands 17 1/4" tall, it weighs about 32 pounds. Caswell Runyan was a Cedar Chest maker from Huntington. Indiana that later became Lane. This chest is from around the early 1940's. Has a rare unique feature in that the drawers swing out allowing access to the lower part. Good condition has minor cosmetic flaws to the outside of it. Also, I have no key, but all you do is twist the lock part and raise the lid. The inside is like new condition and smells strong of cedar. The original tags are still inside of it. On one tag it says that this chest contains more than the 3/4" of Red Tennessee Cedar than recommended by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. This is a Cedar Hope Chest manufactured by the famous Lane Furniture company. It has a full cedar interior and fold down shelf with felt bottom. The exterior has faux draws with handles. I inherited this hope chest from my mother and it’s at least 53 years old. I can’t use it as I don’t have the room. It’s in good condition but there’s some cosmetic issues I think could easily and cheaply be fixed making it perfect. The inside dimensions are 15-1/4” H x 15-1/2” W x 44-3/8” L. The divided tray is 1-3/4” H x 7.5” W x 43” L. NOTE: THIS IS FOR LOCAL PICKUP ONLY! Vintage Queen Anne Style "Cavalier" Cedar Chest-Tennessee Furniture Co.
Offered is this attractive vintage Queen Anne style"Cavalier" cedar chest. Built by the Tennessee Furniture Company in Chattanooga. Tennessee. The Tennessee Furniture Company was founded in 1865 but didn't begin using the"Cavalier" trademark until 1923. I believe the company went out of business in the late 1950s-early 1960s. Making this chest at least 50 years old and possibly as much as 90 years old. The chest is 45" wide. 32" high and 19" deep. The inside dimensions of the storage area. Made from Tennessee red cedar. Are approx. 41 1/2" wide, 14 1/4" high and 16 1/2" deep. All of the front"drawers" are false. I think all of the hardware is original. The cedar interior of the piece is like new. But there are some problems with the veneered exterior: The"foot" of one ... moreof the front legs is damaged. Both ends of the fan emblem are missing. One of the very thin pieces of molding that outline the"drawers" is missing(bottom of top"drawer" The top has a good deal of scratches. Scrapes, etc. Scratch Cover has made it look better. But you might want to consider refinishing the top unless you plan to cover it with something. The front and sides are in much better shape. The original key is included. But I could not get the lock to work. Maybe you can. The lid latch works fine. However. I have this listed as"pickup only" because of what would probably be a very high shipping cost. However. I have up for sale a very nice vintage original circa 1920s- 40s Cedar Chest. The chest is in very clean original condition! It measures approx 45-1/4" long. 20" deep, approx 19-1/2" tall which includes the 1" castor height. The chest is in Excellent Condition- nice clean original finish- strong& sturdy- has a flat top which would be strong enough to sit on- that is unless you are over 300 lbs then I would not advise it. Some normal light age wear as one would expect. The only damage to note is a fairly inconspicuous chip/ slivered off piece- located on the front lower right. Shown up close in pics 10& 12. This is not something that is very noticeable at all, the sliver was done many years back and it has been stained over and the only way you will notice it, is if you look upclose with scrutiny. 1960's cedar chest by Lane, beautiful needlepoint embroidery top dark pine color
My mother bought the cedar chest back in the mid 60's. I think she got it at the Barker Brothers furniture store in west Los Angeles. It has a dark pine or Ebony or whatever finish you want to call it. It probably will ship UPS Freight or maybe even USPS parcel. Just depends. The embroidered top is factory original, it came that way and kinda reminds me of early colonial as far as the style goes. This has the original lock and if you want, you should replace it if you have small children or grandchildren as this is supposed to be airtight and will lock when closed. I understand that Lane furniture makes a child proof lock so that they can't get locked in but you would have to order that from Lane and I don't know what the cost is. The inscription inside the lid says it was presented by Wolf Furniture Co of Clearfield. PENNA. The ends have a few marks where it looks like something was spilled and damaged the finish. The overall finish has some surface marks and signs of use and wear. Hinges are solid and well attached. The lock still works, but it does not have a key. I was able to lock and unlock it with a paper clip fashioned in the shape of a key. See pictures for more detail, they are a part of the description. Items are sold AS-IS. Roo's Cedar Chest
This auction is for ROO'S CEDAR CHEST I believe this could be a pre 1950 but I listed it as a post 1950. I couldn't find a date on the chest. It is used and does show signs of wear. One hinge screw is loose that goes to the base of the trunk. Is intact but may need wood filler but closes fine. It has little wheels on the bottom and seem to roll on concrete just fine.
