Sir(Sydney) Gordon Russell(1892-1982) was one of the most important figures in the history of 20th century furniture. From his early Cotswold Arts and Crafts furniture. To the modernist antique desks of the post-war period, he managed to embrace mass production and mechanization without losing the underlying concepts of high quality craftsmanship. The history of his antique cabinets, tables, chairs and concept furniture can be tracked at the Gordon Russell Museum, housed in his original workshop premises in Worcestershire. In 1923 Russell expanded the business and invested in modern machinery. His aim was to combine Arts and Crafts workmanship with ... moremass-production to produce high quality furniture affordable to everyone. This ranged from homely dining tables to elaborate antique marquetry furniture. Such as the 1925 print cabinet now residing in the Cheltenham Museum. In 1938 Russell set up the Good Furnishing Group. Promoting the retailing of high-quality, mass produced furniture. During the war he spearheaded the government’s utility furniture scheme, and in the post-war years took posts leading to directorship of the Design Centre. He played a leading role in the Festival of Britain in 1951, and was knighted in1955. He retired to the Cotswolds in 1958, but remained closely connected with his company until his death. This listing is for 2 Globe Wernicke bookcase sections. They are both marke d 3313 BGD 14 and the finish is 373 1/ 2 imitation mahogany. They e ach measure 33" L x 13" W x 15" H. Photo one is the first and photo 2 is the other. They are an older model and are stencil ed with the Globe label. There are no tags. Both are very sturdy and the glass is intact. They both need refinish ing pretty much to the same degree. You can see in photo s that there are many scratches and marks. The only difference is that one is missing it's door equalizer(this is the scissor like attachment that Globe bookcase had that attached to the door and roof) It doesn't affect the door as there are also rollers. I'm not sure if these rollers are original or not as I've ha d other Globe sections that do not have them. And to cap it all, it has wonderful hand cut and masterfully executed, inlaid decoration. It has two glazed doors on top for displaying your favourite books with two useful drawers below. It has a Blondish-Brown Patina to it and I believe the finish is original to the unit. It is 29 5/8" wide. 6 1/8" deep at it's top and 7 3/8" deep at it's base and 36 1/4" tall overall. Coming from a well known ranching family in Ouray County. The bookcase-secretary is solid walnut, with three large lower drawers, two small center drawers, and two arched glass bookcase doors. The glass in the upper doors is all original, with characteristic bubbles and waves. The lower drawers are hand dovetailed, with dark carved wood pulls.
