Dates to 1820s-1840s, originally a piece of painted furniture, looking at the front sideways you can see a floral design under the finish, the current finish was probably added in the early 1900s, we had a professional look at it, it is 6 board construction, there is no key for the lock, local pick up only or buyer to arrange shipping. overall measurements. 24 1/2 inches tall. 22 inches deep. 72 inches long. The chest measures a bit smaller under the lid. 17 inches tall, 69 inches long, and 21 1/4 inche deep.

It stands on stile feet and has a three panel front which does not have later carving as so many do. The lock and striking plate are intact. A good large size. This coffer is very solid and sturdy and will give many more years of use. It has age related marks of use and old splits as one would expect. It has the original floor and back. Painted Oak coffer c1836 This is the best'ships Masters' captain or owner) coffer we have seen in the last 30 years. From the historic port of Nantes it is constructed of fine oak rather than the typical pine. The decoration is original and untouched and depicted garlands of flowers with two delightfully naïve canary or oriole type birds. It is impossible to pinpoint its history. They were typically commissioned by ships captains or owners and are usually painted though I have never seen illustrations of such a romantic example. The inference is that it is a marriage piece with the inscribed date that of the union. One can guess it was a gift from a mariner/owner to his bride. The photos do not do it justice it is a wonderfully romantic piece and very effective focal piece for any room. We love it. American Painted Antique Blanket Mule Chest over Drawer, 19th Century
Red Painted American Blanket Chest over Drawer Primarily Yellow Pine. 19th Century Item# 130010CPL26 This is a very attractive Painted American Blanket Chest over a single Drawer retaining an early grungy surface over earlier surfaces of the same color. It is a six-plank blanket chest. Crafted practically in a somewhat crude and certainly rural manner; the face and back are nailed into the sides of the case with square iron nails, this hidden behind half-round black painted molding outlining the facade of the case. The bottom board is nailed in even rows along the sides and along the back, beneath which a single drawer slides in and out of the case. The drawer construction matches that of the case, the joints half-lapped and nailed with iron rose heads, these resting over runners of the same[unidentified] hardwood nailed to the sides of the ... morecase with iron rose heads. The single plank top lifts over original cotter pin hinges supplemented by modern hinges for strength, these modern hinges actually the second set of hinges placed on the case to supplement the cotter pins. The result is a smooth operating top, lifting easily to reveal a large storage area and original steel lock(no key) The cleats flanking the case are nailed to the underside of the lid with a series of even rose heads. All of the brasses are added for effect, the original case having only wooden knobs on the lower drawer at some point before it was painted. The case terminates over boot-jack feet. For anyone passionate about country-style American Painted antiques. This is a beautiful little piece that is not only rather eye-catching, but also quite practical. With a well worn and heavily patinated surface testifying to years of use and enjoyment, the chest remains young in terms of strength and possible length of life if well cared for. Up for auction is this beautiful handmade Pennsylvania style miniature blanket chest or keepsake box. Newly built by myself in southern Maryland. It is constructed of highly figured tiger maple and is based on period examples both in design and construction. All of the wood is carefully selected and matched for consistency of grain and figure, most from a single board. The pictures don't truly capture the amazing figure of this chest. It features all dovetailed construction, bracket feet, mitered moldings and a dovetailed inside tray. It also has a mortised lock with key. It is finished in an Early American Maple stain and a satin lacquer finish that really makes the figure pop out and gives it a nice warm look and feel. Top& bottom are all SPECTACULAR single planks of, I believe Butternut, up to 20-24" across. The old Six-Board Box Blanket Chests were prized& prominent furnishings in the early American home. One of the most striking features and historical importance of these chests was that only the most perfect. Huge& straight trees were used, the goal being to have each side of the massive chest to be made of a single plank, and not joined from two or more boards. Only the very best trunks were made this way. Further down the food-chain of colonial& early American chests. The sides and top were spliced from two or more boards, or in the poorest ... moreof versions, the whole assemblage was covered in paint and a faux-finished'grain-painted' effect was applied, to make it appear as if the sides were single planks. The chests made with single boards on all six sides(hence the"6-Board Box' were crafted from planks cut from the monarchs of the Old Growth Forest. And often are representative of the oldest, most magnificent trees the lumber mill could find. This chest is made from the widest single boards I've seen in an American(or any western) Dovetailed Chest. The wood in this incredible chest is very hard. Clear& cut from an ancient, old-growth tree. The growth-rings are very tight. I've not counted them, but these old Walnuts& Butternuts could grow to hundreds of years old. This tree could have begun life around the time of Pocahontas. The condition of this chest appears superb. Antique Pumpkin Pine 6 board blanket chest
This handsome 6 board Pumpkin Pine chest has hand cut molding around the skirt and breadboard type molding around 3 sides of the cover. The hinges are hand wrought iron'bean' ends with some newer screws used in the 40's. The interior has a till box with a secret drawer under it that would have been used for hiding valuables during 1800's. There is some evidence that this was painted grey originally. But the wood is so beautiful it should have been left unpainted, in my opinion. Length is 49.75" Height is 21" Depth is 20" The hand created dovetail joinery is widely spaced indicating that it is an earlier piece. It has the original hand made lock with key still in it. There is some water staining on the top which can be attended to by the new owner. I have very little information about the chest. It was purchased and shipped back from Shanghi to the best of my knowledge by my father in law who was teaching in China during the mid to late 70's. Vintage cotton old pink and white striped feather ticking bolster. It has the feather still in it. this one is 48" long by 19" wide. tho it is probably for a bolster. To me it also says it would look great on a super blanket chest. It's not a really thick bolster so it tells me it was done up a the pad thing. In good but used condition, it does have some stains, it is being sold as found. Note-this item in a box is almost 7 pounds. There is no damage on item. Unless mentioned above. C. 1820-40; almost untouched condition Item# 1401ETP11PP This is a nearly untouched example of early Americana. An austere and unembellished blanket chest from the second quarter of the nineteenth-century. The top is a single solid plank of thick poplar with molding applied to the edges using cut iron nails, lifting over original cut and forged iron strap hinges(retaining original screws) to reveal a tidy interior with a small till on the left. An iron lock used to be attached to the inside, this and the clasp now absent. The clean lines of the front of the case are accentuated by the exposed dovetailing following from the sides through the original bracket feet. The ... moreentire surface retains a wonderfully patinated early red paint, almost certainly original. While many households do not have a need for blanket chests today. We've seen some very successful integration of these forms into period and primitively styled decors as entertainment stands(being of perfect width to compliment a television) and as a table flanked by a pair of chairs, perhaps in front of the window. Solid wood with cedar lining. pad bun feet with decorative wood trim on sides and oval in center. wood bench style back of trunk is about 3" high with carved design, the skeleton key lock is original hardware( no key is included) the hinge screws appear to have been tampered with as shown- lost some screws and replaced. New Hampshire before moving to California working with the Arroyo Craftsmen) The repeated Chinese lily design is reminiscent of a woodblock. Antique Blanket Chest with 2 drawers ~ red paint ~ fish tail hinges ~ 32" tall
Description This is a large antique blanket chest with 2 drawers. It is all hand dovetailed. It came out of an estate in Pennsylvania. The chest has red paint however someone removed the paint from the lid. It has the original fish tail hinges. One hinge does have a crack at the bend but still works. The inside is clean. The original till is in very good condition however there is a black stain on one side of the bottom. The 2 lower drawers are in very good condition and have sandwich glass pulls. Which may be original. One pull has a large chip and the other one has a small chip. The drawers are hand dovetailed with chamfered bottoms. The feet have extra nails coming from the top, probably to secure them over the years. The chest has the smell of mothballs due to an old box found in one of the drawers. It will need airing out. It is a fascinating chest with a removable tray that uncovers a secret drawer underneath. This may have been used to store special keepsakes or maybe someones sewing tools and accessories. Whatever it was used for. We found no others like it. This is truly a unique piece. This antique chest measures approximately 18 1/4" x 9" x 9 1/4" and is in good but used condition.
