19th C leather covered brass studded camphor wood trunk. Hand painted. Floral design border.Measurements(inches)35.5" wide18.5" deep16.5" tallThis beautiful blanket chest in its original condition. There is wear to the leather and the paint as shown in the pictures. Most noticeable is the lid on the trunk. The leather is worn around the edges of the trunk as well. The leather has been recently conditioned with 100% Neatsfoot Oil leather softener preserver. One of the original rolling ball type footing hardware is missing, the other three are still in good working condition. Missing original latching hardware. The single drawer is hand cut dove tail joined and a hand chamfered drawer bottom and box with initialed signature on bottom of drawer box. Antique Hand Painted German Pennsylvania Dutch Chest Trunk Dowry Dower Blanket
Beautiful Antique German Pennsylvania Hand Painted Trunk Chest For sale is a beautiful antique hand painted chest or trunk. It is decorated on 4 sides with flowers. The painting appears to be on top of a gesso or tempera of sorts. The flower painting is very nice and in pretty good shape on the sides but worn on the top. The escutcheon is very unique. The trunk measures roughly 46.5 inches wide by 23.5 inches deep by 23.5 inches high. It shows a good deal of age because it is very old. I am not certain but would estimate late 18th to early 19th century. It is possible that it is older since the joints and hardware are similar to chests claiming to be early to mid 1700s. The hardware and lock are iron and the locking mechanism is very primitive in design. I do not have a key. The iron hinges could use a little straightening. There are square ... moreand round nails holding it together. Some of the nails for the hinges have been replaced with screws. The paint is cracked and peeling and missing and dirty. The interior of the trunk shows mostly red. The lid has a label and a picture of cupids. The label in in German but I don't think it has anything to do with the origin or maker of the trunk. There is a small lidded storage compartment on the left side. The ball feet appear to be correct. One toward the back shows deterioration. There are some random areas that show past termite activity or worm holes. I am not sure. The boards are solid. Though. This trunk was just removed from a Los Angeles storage unit and needs a very thorough cleaning. I am not an expert on such pieces and welcome any details people might be able to add. C. 1760-80 Item# 1401CGP11PP This well preserved and highly austere American Chippendale blanket chest is clearly a work from South Central. Pennsylvania. Executed in thick walnut planks in all primary surfaces, utilizing walnut also for the back board and poplar for the bottom board, this chest was built to last for generations. The large dovetails that line all corners are bold and extremely precise, these left intentionally exposed as a statement of quality and longevity. The top is edged in a nicely formed molding, affixed with large wooden pegs along the front and joined to the sides on through tenons and tightened with a wedge driven between the tenon and molding. The ... moretop lifts on huge hand forged iron strap hinges to reveal the clean and spacious interior and small till on the left. The original lock and clasp are still fully functioning in the interior, this large lock a highly effective design that can hold the weight of the large lid without strain. On either side of the chest. Large original hand forged iron handles are conveniently attached for easy transport- identical handles are documented in Fabian's work on the Pennsylvania-German Decorated Chest(p. 94) found on a chest inscribed c. 1775. Several interesting examples in his book are also resting over the somewhat unusual"shoe" footing found on this chest; we have spent some time examining these and are convinced they are original to the chest. No other holes exist on the underside. These unmoved from their original positions. Each is affixed to the bottom with two original wooden pins, supplemented by later added steel screws(19th Century) each finished with a carved toe that is quite attractive. ANTIQUE 1780's BLANKET CHEST COFFER INTRICATE CARVINGS This is an absolutely beautiful blanket chest coffer. It is a phenomenal piece of history. It dates to about 1780's. It features intricate carving on the front. Chamfer back paneled, HANDFORGED heart shaped handles, hand wrought rosette nails and square nails, dovetailed joints, wood peg jointed which is all typical for the period. The top has some cracks. It has some newer flat head screws in the top(still older screws) It appears to have been cut down and looks a little uneven when I look at it. Overall this piece is still super solid for the age! Antique Lebanon County, Pa., Painted Blanket Chest Spectacular Circa 1800
For sale we have a Pennsylvania Painted/Decorated Blanket Chest of dovetailed construction. With three drawers and flat bracket feet. The arched tombstone panels on both the top surface and the front panel are dappled in a dark blue/green hue with a sunburst design in each arch. The tombstone panels are surrounded by an eye catching sawtooth design. The drawer fronts are painted in the same blue/green color and have brass pulls. The overall background color of the chest is an earthy orange. The inside of the chest reveals the original till, hinges and jaw lock. Based on comparisons in Fabian's"The Pennsylvania German Decorated Chest" this piece appears to date from 1800 from Dauphin County which is now Lebanon County. We did not"clean up" the surface of this chest leaving it in"as found" condition. Primitive Blanket Chest, Dry Blue/Green Paint, Handmade, Early 19th C., 6 Boards
This is an early to mid 19th C. blanket chest. Handmade from 6 pine boards and fully dovetailed. It retains a very old blue/green paint, and it measures 36.25"W, 19.75"D, and 18"H. The chest is partially lined with Wilmington, DE area newspaper that dates ~1870. Due to the type of hand tools tools found in the chest, I suspect it was converted to a tool chest in the late 19th to very early 20th C. There are outlines on the bottom where the original round feet were located, and these would be appropriate for a late 18th to early 19th C. chest of this type. Due to the hardware(nails, hinges, etc. I feel confident that the chest was made after the 18th C, and that repairs including new hinges and clasp were made in the later 19th C. I fastened two pine reinforcements to the interior bottom of the chest to stabilize a crack in ... morethat board. The chest is now structurally solid and the hinges and clasp work very well for a chest of this age. The trim of the bottom sides are missing, and there is slight movement in the front trim. Additionally, there are losses to the bottom board, particularly in the right-rear corner. This chest clearly spent many years in a workshop of some type, and there is appropriate wear to nearly every surface. I vacuumed the interior and carefully cleaned the exterior. This chest is a genuine early American primitive object. I acquired this chest in Chadds Ford, PA, and I doubt it has ever left this immediate area. Richly ornately carved 17th Century hardwood Blanket Chest. Chest is unsigned. But features carved monogram AS and date 1695 on front; it is made of framed panels on all sides, back and top. Deeply carved intricate scrollwork details and four Romanesque arches adorn the front. Metal hinges and locking mechanism are original and in good working order. And even includes the original key. Measures 5' x 2' x 2' The wood and metal surfaces all show wear and abrasions consistent with the more than 300 years of usage, but the box is quite heavy, the structure very sturdy, and all panels are sound. Up for auction is a beautiful and unusual 1700's Chippendale style. Two drawer blanket chest refinished and ready to use. This is a beautiful primitive piece with raised storage and two pull out drawers. Wonderful antique details such as the original hinges and the cut Chippendale style legs. This is a wide plank pine chest with Chestnut drawers. Very unusual solid large boards where used from a time when pine could be harvested in this size. The hinges are hand hammered. Knot holes are tin covered to keep mice out. This piece measures 41 1/2" high x 39 1/2" wide x 18 3/4" deep. Here is a beautiful primitive piece with a lot of character. Primative 18th Cen. Carolina 6 Board Blanket Chest Green Paint c. 1790 Rose Head
PICK-UP ONLY! A rare. Old, authentic six(6) board blanket chest found in South Carolina. Based on the construction and the rose-head nails, the chest(blanket box) has been dated at around 1790. The boards are made of pine and in surprisingly good condition. There are a few signs of wear. Such as some of the trim is missing from the bottom and top, the locking mechanism is missing and one of the strap hinges is not attached. The hinges are hand made(forged) individually by a blacksmith. The original nails are also individually made by a blacksmith, there are some other nails that have been added later, some for the purpose of attaching some sort of lining, possibly, most of the original nails are in place, I took a photo of 2 of the rose head nails that were in the bottom of the box, one of them appears to be for the loose strap hinge. There ... moreare at least two modern screws that I found. One was put in one of the hinges and another was put on the bottom board to help secure it. The chest is very sturdy and strong. not rickety at all. You can sit, or even stand on it(not that I would) I am asking a fair amount for this very old work of art and important piece of Americana, but I will entertain all reasonable offers. As for shipping and delivery; I am not prepared to ship this large box. With a width of over 42 inches(height and depth are both around 17 1/2" I do not want to try shipping this. I am listing it as; for PICK-UP ONLY. I will try to work with you as best I can. Here we have a stunning antique wooden dovetailed blanket chest or kindling box. with a footed base and large square nails. circa 1890 to 1920. the overall size is 19 inches long by 12 inches wide by 13 1/2 inches tall. the overhanging lid is 20 1/2 inches long by 14 inches wide. the feet are one inch tall. the large hand cut dovetails are tight and secure. But stunning as well. this is what draws you to it. the wood looks to be knotty pine. it has formed a wonderful golden patina on the overall appearance. there are two brass hinges securing the lid. the hinges are not old. there are no cracks or hairlines, but the front does show some scratches in the wood. the footed base may have been replaced at some time, but still looks great. see plenty of detailed photos.
