A very fine antique. Circa 1840, Empire plain mahogany boards, with some flame mahogany veneers, bookcase top secretary desk over two door cabinet. Two piece construction: the bookcase with three adjustable wood shelves, the interior with an old ivory paint finish. Both doors retain their original wavy glass, brass escutcheon, key and lock. The drop front desk has a felt writing surface, cubbyhole with two drawers and letter slots. The two bottom doors have a brass grill over dowel framed pink fabric, with brass escutcheon and lock. The compartment has a removable wood shelf. The furniture measures 7'2" 86" tall by 2'1" 25" wide by 22-1/2" deep, the bookcase shelves 10" deep. Here is a fantastic original Georgian circa late 1700's English solid oak desk with gorgeous figured mahogany. The mahogany would have probably been added at a later date such as the early 1800's when figured mahogany veneer became more popular and more readily available. The pigeon hole interior has a unique look and design with lots of extra added details as well as a well interior below the writing surface which simply slides open. The interior is solid oak.some beautiful quartersawn and this slant front will lock with a replaced lock and key. Hinges are heavy iron and original. The top drawer is a false drawer and then the 2 over 3 drawers are all graduated. All of the drawers inside and out are hand dovetailed as shown. The desk has a dark stain finish even though some of the photos came out lighter because of the lighting when I took photos. There are antique brass finish handles and hardware on the drawers- one handle is missing. The traditional drop leaf desk/tray and its mechanisms work without problems. The two front legs are ball and claw style- both have some of the finish chipped off of them. Overall, the desk is heavy duty and in sturdy condition with minor wear and tear. It has a drop front typical of a secretary desk. The lining on the inside writing surface needs a blotter or you could put a leather surface on it. There are cubbies and pigeon holes for items. Two small drawers are inside as well. The lock on the desk works and has a key. There are brass key hole trims on each drawer but they are only for decoration as there are no locks on the four drawers. The drawer pulls are typical of the Colonial Early American period. I have no idea how old this desk is as I bought it as an antique in the Boston area in the 1970's. It is a very heavy item so could be ash or some other fine wood. Up for your consideration today is this magnificent authentic antique secretary desk/curio cabinet. IT IS AN ORIGINAL LARKIN AND THE ORIGINAL PAPERWORK IS STILL ATTACHED TO THE BACK. Please check out the photos carefully. The finish is wonderful with very little wear. The beveled mirror is original. The key still works to lock the glass curio door. it does not lock the desk drop leaf or drawer) All carvings are original. The only thing that I know to be changed is the glass shelving. My husband added the shelving. Whether you use this piece to display depression glass as I do, or as a book cabinet or antiques display cabinet it is always a conversation piece. I had a collection of antique ink wells so they were displayed behind the glass and I left the drop leaf down and had a well, antique quill pens an antique tea cup and saucer on the ... moredesk. This is a wonderful piece and will add charm to any room. Three things I must point out. There is a stain inside the drawer. I think it is an ink stain. It is not visible from the outside, only the inside of the drawer. There is a small mark on the shelf that may be a burn. I have taken a photo of the key next to the mark so you can gauge the size of this flaw. Lastly I have been told that there was a small 2 inch piece of wood that extended across the top of the book shelf side of the unit I don't know what it looked like but was told by an authority that it is missing. Until I was told it never looked like anything was missing. Whatever I have displayed on that shelf always looked wonderful. The glass door is original and has no flaws. THIS PIECE WAS MADE IN AMERICA BY LARKIN and has held its value. I own it for about 25 years but must sell everything as we are moving into a vary small space. Please check out my other antiques. Italian 1900 Antique Hand Crafted Oak Secretary Desk. This secretary desk was hand crafted in Italy around 1900 of solid oak. The old finish with some newer revarnishing preserves lots of antique character. Dings, wear and shrinkage separations from age. Waxed and polished, only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain its warm patina. Wrought iron side handles are original. Brass hardware is old but not original. The lock on the dropfront does not work, the key is a handle only. Pull out arms support the lid. Inside are eight small drawers plus a locking compartment with inlaid banding and a star on the door. All drawers have hand cut dovetail joints on this historic European furniture. Every surface shows hand planing. Sides are single wide planks and the front has wooden pegs at the joints. Our beautiful neighbors left this for us after they had a major life change. After hours of researching what the famous Maddox Colonial Drop Down Secretary Desks are all about. What is certain is that most of the confusion lies in that these OLD VINTAGE/ANTIQUE pieces were a result of a series of OLD Colonial Revival-style reproductions, created under the trade name"Maddox Colonial Reproductions" However, these"reproductions" were created between about 1918 and the 1950's! So while they are"reproductions" of much older colonial-age furniture pieces. The"reproductions" are now themselves vintage& antique. Make sense? I've seen a few exactly like the one I'm listing here in worse condition. Asking hundreds of dollars, and 90% of the listings know very little about them if anything. Further research on my part. I learned how splitting the hairs on this"vintage/antique of an antique reproduction" isn't so easy to pin down when it comes to the actual age of each piece of wood

This is a beautiful oak desk with mirror. It is called an" English Tudor Desk" I believe it to be French Provincial. But since I haven't been able to find one like it, I am unsure. It has a drop down writing surface, with cubbies, and one large drawer. It also has beautiful scroll work on it. The desk was refinished, but the mirror is original. At one time there must have been a key, but it does not have one now. Oak Secretary Desk/Bookcase– American Late 1800’s– one of a kind. Refinished and restored by a professional company. Medium oak with original hardware. High quality detailed claw feet in front and carved design on front of drop down desk top. Carved design on the front of the canopy at the top of the desk. The mirrors are original and are beveled around the perimeter of each mirror. The mirror on the left was broken. But has been put back together, but shows the crack. There are three drawers below the drop down desk top which are functional and slide in and out easily. The bookcase on the left has four shelves which are adjustable plus the bottom is also a shelf. The curved glass on the front of the bookcase is cracked from stress when moving this piece of furniture. It can be replaced. See photos. 125 year old (1889) antique oak desk bookcase secretary - La Crosse Wisconsin
Antique oak combination drop front desk bookcase secretary. 10 compartments& drawer inside. fixed shelf on bottom. Original beveled mirror. drop front has a key and it locks! After I purchased it I discovered the back of the little inside drawer had the words"Wm Thomas 1889" written in pencil. It is very faint. But readable. While restoring I took great care as not to damage the writing. I can't guarantee that it was written in 1889, but I do believe it is genuine. The front drop desk was missing and has been replaced with very old oak to match the piece, and an antique lock was installed. It originally had hinges on the drop desk. I couldn't locate antique replacement hinges and thus I went with brass chains which work very nicely and look great. This is a really nice drop front inlaid secretary fresh out of an estate. It was made in Italy around 1960 where the previous owner purchased it. It is profusely covered in marquetry inlay. Hand crafted of solid walnut about 1840, this clean lined desk is very pleasing. The finish is waxed and buffed. So an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is all that is needed to maintain its warm patina. There are small mars at the edges for character, the flip open desk writing area has ink stains. Bookcase doors have old wavy glass and original brass and porcelain latches. Square cut nails are visible on this American made antique furniture. Said to be from Pennsylvania.
