It was likely made in the early 1900's. Made of oak. And has a spooncarved front. There are no identifying markings. It is in excellent shape and it has the original finish. Brass fittings show a bit of tarnish but should clean up easily with a little TLC. Three of the posts on the brass rail at the top are loose but can be easily secured with a little bit of attention. One of the rail ends is stripped so that will need to be secured as well. Otherwise this piece is ready for your home. I would be happy to provide more detailed photos if requested. I hate to part with such a beautiful and unique item but we no longer have the room and it just doesn't fit our decor. This roll-cylinder secretary features a wonderful ... moreheavy carved crest, and dates from the 1880's. It comes with three original shelves that are adjustable behind the wavy glass doors. It has burl walnut panels coming down both sides, heavy crown molded top and a crest with big ball finials on each end. It has a commode base with three drawers and a door. The only thing I don’t like about this cylinder desk is that the finish is light, similar to a cherry, but it is walnut wood. It has the original heavy bold brass hardware, and is in really nice shape. The pull-out writing surface has green felt on it. Antique Georgian Federal(?) Secretary Slant Front Desk Four Drawer Bureau 1840
Family lore has it that this was made in 1840 but I don't know for sure. This was my father's father and. Given to me but I'm headed to. South America and none of our children want it. All the drawers and top are joined. With dovetails at the corners. All the drawer bottoms have chamfered. Ends that fit into a tight track in the drawer. Sides. I'm guessing that drawer facewood. Is cherry(mahogany? and hinder parts of drawers made from boxwood. All the drawers fit precisely. The large drawers have grooves worn in them. From riding over guidance rails in the front of. The drawer entry points(see pics) It looks like. This was by design to accommodate the heavy. Drawers(which are prob mahogany. Not cherry) Veneer is poor in several areas. Esp the slope top front. The back view pic shows two arrows pointing out the width of a single ... moreboard which is a whopping 21 1/2 inches wide. Included in this pic at the bottom are shown. The three pieces of molding that need to be glued back onto the'ankles' The brass balls in the feet at each corner rotate. Nicely but the 2 x 2 inch wood stock that the casters are attached to have a nasty habit of coming loose. And need to be re-attached. This happened today. In fact, as I was rolling the 200 lb desk back inside after the photo shoot. I'll put it back in place with some wood screws. Before sending it out. Georgian English Antique 1840 Secretary Desk& Bookcase. A late Georgian secretary desk with a bookcase was hand crafted about 1840 in England. The old finish is very well preserved with lots of antique character- mars. Wear and shrinkage separations from age- see photos. Mahogany wood has delicate inlaid banding and warm patina. The top two drawers are false. They drop to form a desk top. This style of desk was often called a"butler's desk" in a large household, the butler was the head of staff and kept records in a desk like this. Inside is a natural saddle leather writing surface and contrasting golden drawers. All drawers have tiny hand cut dovetail joints. The flame mahogany displays a rich complexion ... moreand a striking grain that have only grown more beautiful over the years. In complement to the mahogany. Traditional satinwood fan inlay adorns the center of the fall. A few nicks and wear marks add character to the wood, although there are not many and they are mostly concentrated around the base, which is normal for a piece of this age. Meanwhile, a series of brass swan neck pulls adorn the drawer fronts. The desk area itself is inlaid with a rich writing surface of fine, brown leather bordered by gold tooling. As far as we can tell, this leather appears in the condition as other vintage leather samples that we’ve come across, so it is most likely original. Antique Secretary, cabinet, walnut furniture, desk, 1900 darling!
Gorgeous piece. I hate to let it go, but I'm moving and need to downsize! Circa 1900 secretary I believe is walnut. maker unknown. This was more of a middle class piece rather than a fine piece in it's day, so I was told by the dealer. It is solidly constructed, and stands 93" tall including pediment. it comes apart into two pieces making it easier to move. the top cabinet with glass doors is 62" tall and is rather shallow at nine inches which is nice if you don't want too bulky a piece. the bottom stands 31" and is 18 inches deep at the top, the cabinet being 15 inches deep. it is 38" wide. With desk folded down it is 23" deep. It has some insect gouges, I guess you might call them and other flaws and some wear. Pediment has been repaired. but you can hardly tell. I practically swooned when I saw this piece of furniture. This Queen Anne style is one of my favorites. With the cabriole legs in front and the straight legs in back. The hardware on this piece is simply gorgeous, but it is the patina on the old cherry that really knocked me out. Plus, it is solid as a rock, even after all this time. There had been a gallery around the top that broke in two places so I had to take it off-a loss but there is so much else dreamy about this piece that it is hardly missed. Large Antique Secretary Desk/Cabinet with glass doors & pull down desk
I am selling a very nice(and very large! antique secretary/desk/cabinet. This belonged to my husband's grandparents or great-grandparents. We believe it was made in the mid to late 1800s. We have other furniture of their's and we know that is when those were made. Therefore leading us to believe the same about this piece. We do not know for sure it's history- both of my in-laws passed away several years ago, so we cannot get the full history. This piece is in two sections: the top sits down in the bottom cabinet. The bottom section has two doors with two shelves inside that are great for storage. The top section has glass doors at the top, with three shelves inside. Under the glass doors are two door on the ends, with a pull down"desk" in the middle. There are small drawers and shelves inside that section. The dimensions ... moreare approximately 6 ft. 10 in. tall. 5 ft. wide, and 21 in. deep on the bottom. It has been well taken care of. We believe the finish is original. It features original brass hardware, a single pull-out drawer beneath the desk, and six compartments inside to store letter, bills, etc. I estimate the age of this piece to be approximately 110 years. Antique English Oak Secretary Desk Barley Twist
Unique. Beautiful, dark oak secretary desk made in England. I am not a professional; this piece is from my home. The gentleman I bought it from told me it was English, made about 1910-20. This piece is sturdy; 78" x 37 1/2" x 17 1/2" at the deepest desk portion. The top attaches to the desk with two screws and therefore can be dismantled for transit. Barley twist design on all four legs. I don't see any name of maker on wood. The lock to the drop-down desk door is marked"English Made" and"USA 2232/12 PAT EVER" Glass is original and wavy. Not chipped, cracked, or broken or missing. Glass door design features mission styling. Inside of glass top there are 3 moveable shelves and sawtooth wood shelf hangers up to the top 4" or so and the bottom 4" or so to hang the shelves. Has original bolt latch ... moreon the bottom of left glass door that bolts into the bottom of the cabinet. Comes with a key that locks the glass doors. But the key doesn't seem to move the desk lock, though it does fit into it. Drop-down desk door has bead design and wood appliqué on the front. Hinges have seen repairs from earlier damage but the desktop/door functions fine. Two wood support bars for the drop-down door extend automatically when door is opened. Cabinet hardware is original except the drawer pulls are replacements(the original pulls were attached by a single screw) The drawers slide very well for a piece this age. Have dovetail joinery, are sturdy and don't wiggle. Look the photos over carefully. As you can see this is an excellent condition 1910-1920's secretary. Every single piece of this secretary/vanity is original. Even the mirror and the mirror backing are original(in half of the secretary out there for sale some part of it has been replaced) These typically in mint condition like this are listed/sell for $3,000-$5,000. VERY OLD ANTIQUE SLANT DROP FRONT SECRETARY WRITING DESK FROM ENGLAND CONSTRUCTED OF SOLID OAK- I BELIEVE THE HARDARE IS ORIGINAL WITH THE POSSIBLE EXCEPTION OF A FEW SCREWS. THE BACKPLATE ON ONE OF THE SMALL DRAWER KNOBS INSIDE THE DESK IS MISSING. THE 6TH PHOTO SHOWS A CLOSEUP OF THE OLD DROP PULLS THAT ARE ON ALL OF THE 3 LOWER DRAWERS(although it is upside down) THE ENGLISH WERE AMONG THE FIRST TO USE NATURAL PLANT PIGMENTS IN STAINING WOOD FURNITURE AND THIS DESK IS A GREAT EXAMPLE OF THAT PROCESS. One thought was to remove the lock in hopes of finding the maker, but we did not, as we did not want to perhaps damage the screw heads. There are slight marks to the lower right of the Inlaid star on the top. There are two holes with brass cylinders on the front(top) edge.not sure what they are for.no accessory hardware for them either. The star(top) is composed of 16 individual inlaid pieces in the veneer. The wood is unknow to us, if we(I) had to guess I would say walnut, with maple or ash pinstripping forming the boarders on the top and side edges. The bottom is cover in green felt(no picture) somewhat worn, but not ripped, just some rolled edges(comprised of three pieces of felt) one having the number 033 marked on it. This item came with an auctioneer tag from Gaston& Sheehan Auctioneers Inc. in Pflugerville, Tx. with alot number of 680 on the tag. We called them, but without more information, relative to the piece it was impossible to search just the lot number 680. Antique desk top secretary organizer primitive wood,stencil 1766, general store
Nice looking original primitive antique desk topper. Unknown origin, maker, age. As you see it is stenciled 1766 in the same color dark stain as the rest of the piece. Nice size at 30" wide, 9 1/2" tall, and 6" deep. The wood construction is all 1/4" except for the supports. I added extra pictures to show the condition, surface wear, scratching, marks, ect. It is a solid piece in overall good useable condition, no wood cracking, breaks or chips, just the minor condition issues from age and use.
