It has claw front feet and is in very good condition, however, it does have ... moresome light surface scratches and general wear that are typical of a piece that probably dates to the early 19th century, although I cannot be completly sure of its age. It has lovely carved accents and trim. The key is intact with it and the little side supports come out automatically when the front writing desk surface is lowered. Someone has unfortunately drilled a hole in the back that is about 2" in diameter. The desk has 4 drawers with all of the original knobs intact. It stands 41" tall at the trim at the back, 40" tall at the top, is 41" wide at the feet, 37" wide at the top, and is a total of 22" deep at the bottom, and 19" deep at the top.

Maddox Company of NY Antique Mahogany Secretary Desk. Book Shelf Top. Measures 83.5" height, 36" wide, 18.5" deep. There are a few scratches, the worst being on the top of desk where the bookshelf sits, see last pic. It is missing the finial on the top center. There are 7 original handle pulls, the bottom 2 are missing the bale. There is one that doesn't match. There is also a strip of wood that was broken where the lock goes on the top of the desk, you can only see it if the desk is open. See pic#5 Other than the mentioned issues. Here is a fantastic original Georgian circa late 1700's English solid oak desk with gorgeous figured mahogany. The mahogany would have probably been added at a later date such as the early 1800's when figured mahogany veneer became more popular and more readily available. The pigeon hole interior has a unique look and design with lots of extra added details as well as a well interior below the writing surface which simply slides open. The interior is solid oak.some beautiful quartersawn and this slant front will lock with a replaced lock and key. Hinges are heavy iron and original. The top drawer is a false drawer and then the 2 over 3 drawers are all graduated. All of the drawers inside and out are hand dovetailed as shown. This is a Victorian burl walnut butler’s secretary desk. Purchased from a local estate, this gorgeous solid black ... morewalnut butler’s bookcase desk is in original condition. All we did was polish it up, and some minor wear shows here and there in the finish, but it adds charm and character. We did replace the felt on the desk because it was in rough condition. This is called a butler’s desk because back in the old days, the butler was an important person in the household. He took care of the house, paid bills, and did all the food shopping. He would get the groceries, and he would make the list on this desk. It was also used as a dish cupboard in the dining room. This one has lots of burl on it, lots of rosettes, burl trim all over, and racetrack moldings on the doors, which retain their original brass hardware. The beautiful solid black walnut case has a carved crest on top, which is normally missing on these pieces. There is truly burl all over this piece: on the top, the face of the bookcase/china closet, rosettes and buttons. The handles and burl walnut on the drop down lid are unbelievable. This desk measures: Top glass front section: 26" tall x 10" deep x 31 wide. distance between the shelves is: 8" They are equal and are not movable. There are 2 shelves making 3 spaces for books, display items etc. The glass doors swing easily and there is a lock that works with a key( included) The left side has an inside clasp under the top shelf to keep it closed. There were at one time X shaped minions on the glass that still have a faint impression in the glass. May be removable-I never tried. Bottom Desk/drawer section: 39 1/2" tall x 16" deep x 31 1/2" wide. The drawers on the inside are 27 1/2" wide x 6 1/4" high x 13 1/4" deep. Each of the 3 drawers are the same size and all slide freely. Desk section: The swing down desk writing surface that closes to a slant measures 11 1/2" deep ... morex 30 1/4" wide. The hinges are sturdy. There are no underneath bars or braces. The remaining desk surface that is existing that goes in from the fold down section measures 15" deep. There are 2 small drawers. One on either side, the drawer inside dimensions are: 6" x 5 3/4" x 1 1/2" deep They both slide freely. Above each drawer are 2 upright letter sections each measuring 7" deep x 3" wide x 4 3/4" high. There is a flat section between the small drawer/letter sections that measures 9" x 7" deep x 9" wide. There is space on either side of this cubby section for taller ledgers, books etc. that measures 2 1/4" wide x 10" tall x 7" deep. This is a very practical and well laid out inside section for various storage. Still useful today for lots of desk type items. Total height is: 65 3/4" The pieces are connected and not easily separated. The desk overall is in very good condition. Even though it is quiet simple in design. The outside is finished off nicely. I'm selling this beautiful antique secretary made of solid mahogany that I received from a gentleman who said it was in his family for 7 generations and was originally purchased in the Hudson River Valley in New York by his steamboat captain great-great-great-great-great grandfather in approximately 1800. It has 3 hidden compartments and lots of pigeon holes and small drawers. It comes with the keys for the upper hutch. The fold down desk and the small door inside but not the drawers below. It has the original glass, which is wavy and has bubbles in it, in both panels on the left side but not on the right side. One pane is missing on the right side but would be easy enough to replace. Lots of character on this gorgeous old piece. It measures 81 inches high, 47 inches wide and is 23-1/2 inches deep at the bottom. I believe it may have been made by the Valentine-Glascock Company or possibly Chautaugua as this was a common style they both made. When desk is down there is a unique storage place for paper. Tiny dovetail joints and mahogany banding suggest that the master cabinetmaker was apprenticed in England before emigrating to America. The satiny finish is in excellent condition. Solid oak construction shows hand planing marks and square hand cut nail heads. Graduated drawers have chamfered bottoms and hand cut dovetail joints. Brasses are old but not original on this traditional antique furniture. The lock and key still work on the drop front. Which rests on pull out supports. The exterior finish has very fine crazing which is not obvious- you must view it at an acute angle in the light- and VERY few of the minor marks these things usually pick up over a century. There is no real damage or dings. I do not have the key. The hinges are completely solid. The interior wood finish is in nearly the same condition but has about a half dozen wear spots. The velvet pad is original. It is split across the boxe's hinge but I believe it may have been made that way- there in no fraying- and the tab to ... morelift the bottom section is missing. The only real problem is that the velvet, which acts as the hinge for the two compartment lids, is loose from the frame of the box's lid as seen in the fourth pic; this is easily repaired. The compartments are clean and include the original dust. There are two ink bottles- one with its original pewter collar and lid and the other is missing the pewter pieces. The lid for the pen/pencil compartment has ink spilled on it(seen in the pics) but this should clean off if you know how to do that. Excellent Antique Oak Larkin No 17 Secretary's Desk
I've been busy trying to get some good stuff in shop to try to jump-start sales a bit and upcoming shopping season is coming quickly. I went to a good auction in upstate New York the other day and tried to pick up smaller furniture that fits within Greyhound Express size limits. Anyway this is a score and I'm proud to offer this for your consideration. I believe this is a No 17 model desk and it is truly in very nice condition with no signs of repairs or break except the bottom drawer has a minor glue in corner. The finish is very good as the pictures should show off and the original key works fine and all hardware is original and working perfectly. It is nice and sturdy a sets flush with no wobbles. It measures 47" tall x 30" wide x 17" deep. The back is not beautiful with the white wash but the original Larkin labels ... moreare present and in good shape. Once again Greyhound Express is great and should ship this for about 90 west coast and 70 east. As long as you can pick it up. Local pick up is always option too and I now have a utility trailer and can deliver within reason. This unique. Handcrafted, solid mahogany secretary folding top desk was given to me by my grandparents in the 1960s. The color has remained sharp over the years and the desk is solidly built. My grandparents had it for many years. The carvings on the desk are unique as are the brass drawer pulls and hinges. It measures 36"L x 36"H x 19"D. It is in very good condition. There are four small drawers in the top of the desk, along with six small cubbies. There are one large drawer, two deep drawers and one cubby below the desk top. All drawers are working.
