You are looking at a beautiful antique English late 19th century travel secretary desk made by Bramah of London and retailed by Lloyd. Payne& Amiel of Manchester. The rectangular case having a hinged top and a drop-front with a leather inset writing surface, fitted interior and a secret compartment containing the original ink wells. Antique Art Deco era Crocodile Leather Desk Top Ink Well Accessory
Offered- A good quality Art-Deco era Crocodile Desk Top Accessory c 1920/1930. The exterior consists of a Ink Well, a Stamp Box. Loops for 3 Pens/Pencils and a Top Fold which opens to the interior. The interior of the piece has a surface for writing- with pig-skin folders to the left for paper and envelopes. The piece measures 12 inches by 7 1/2 inches. The ink well appears to be brushed steel with a push-style opener which is located under the leather at the front of the well. The stamp box is divided into 2 sections all of which are lined in pig skin. The Pen/Pencil loops are stable and intact. The bottom of the piece is covered in an old-style brown paper- not in the best of condition- but easily re-covered. I have inserted a piece of marbled paper where the blotter is. American Federal Walnut Slant Front Desk. Mid-Atlantic States With satinwood inlays over splayed French feet; c. 1790-1810 Item# 130102EWP01 This is a very fine American Federal Period Slant Front Desk of Mid-Atlantic origin. Crafted in solid walnut c. 1790-1810. The lid is a highly figured single board(14 1/4" in horizontal depth) flanked by lipped cleats pinned on either end with an applied molded front lip. It lowers over original forged iron hinges to rest on walnut lopers, revealing eight small drawers over eight valanced pigeon-hole slots flanking a tombstone-door with channel-molded document drawers on either side of it. The scroll cut form of each valance over the pigeon-holes perfectly matches the form of the slot dividers. The interior drawers have numerous inscriptions: each has a"WW" which are intertwined on some ... moredrawers as"X/ one inscribed"Small.amd 74.957 NDE" The interior door opens to reveal a pair of drawers over a large cubby, one of the drawers inscribed: J C(quite clear) Reuben. Or possibly" J C Lieutenant" and dated" January 25th 1787" the 17 of 1787 is quite unclear. But after carefully examining it we are pretty sure that is what is inscribed. The interior cubby is an ingenious bit of craftsmanship- by pulling out a nail from the middle backboard. That backboard quickly is removed from the case; this reveals a natural knot in the pine board behind the cubby-hole with two tiny tenons that drop into the desk; by lifting on this knot, the tenons lift and allow the entire cubby to slide forward out of the desk. It is a gorgeous and flawlessly crafted box of solid walnut with dovetail joinery, the back board lifting out of the cubby-box from rabbets along either side, revealing a pair of hidden drawers inside. This desk set is richly decorated with hand painted Oriental scenes; in addition there are two inkwells made of glass on each side. The box had a key that is missing; the top unfolds and has a red velvet cover allowing the user to write easily. The cover unfolds and there an inner compartment to keep paper or hand writing utensils. On the top. There is a small box, most likely for envelops or short pads. The brass escutcheons, while quite attractive, no longer house functioning locks. Each side has developed a separation in the mahogany as part of the wood's natural aging process; these age separations are purely cosmetic and don't affect the structural integrity of the piece. During a past restoration, a line of black stain was applied to these separations to complement the actual dark inlay around the bottom. The fall has also become uneven over the years and has sustained some wear to the corners but remains, like the rest of this piece, very sturdy. Finally there are a number of minor wear marks and the back feet were also replaced during the restoration. Overall this antique bureau remains in very good condition and would make a fine addition to any home or office furniture collection! This gorgeous mahogany bureau was hand-crafted in Victorian England around the year 1860. This bureau contains plenty of storage space. The sides look great. This antique secretary in solid walnut and burled walnut veneers came to us from England c1880. It is in beautiful condition and boasts three adjustable shelves(spaced at 2 ½” apart) in the upper unit along with the original glass front doors. There is a key for the upper cabinet and it works in the lock. But the locking mechanism does not work(missing the catch) There are some surface scratches to the bottom of the upper cabinet and also to the writing surface. Solid brass teardrop knobs complete the drawers which vary in depth(top at 4 ¾” middle at 6 ½” and the bottom drawer at 8 ½” Drawer fronts are a burled walnut veneer in excellent condition. Overall height is 85 ½” and the bottom section is 36”w x 19 ¾”d with the pull down substantial writing surface at 35 ½”w x 23”d(there are narrow panels on either ... moreside of the lower unit that pull out and support the writing surface) There seems to be some very slight delamination of the burled walnut veneer on the pull down panel– this is not noticeable unless scrutinized up close and should probably be left as is(refer to photos) as it does not affect the integrity of the piece. There are some slots for mail and smaller drawers as well that have the original brass knobs. The upper section is 34 12”w x 9 ¾”d. It comes apart in two pieces for ease of transport. Antique English Lap Desk / End Table
This a very unusual antique lap desk. Or in a military context, a campaign desk. It is from the first quarter of the nineteenth century. This piece is English in origin. It was fashioned from a European hardwood; likely oak. A cabinet maker has cleverly created a frame and legs for the lap desk to make it a small end table. The original lap desk simply rests in the frame, so it can be used as a small table without being altered from its original state. The desk is decorated with inlaid brass strips and dots that are still intact. The overall condition of the desk is excellent, considering its age and the fact that it was constantly toted from place to place. The lock still works with the original key, but slight warping does not allow the top to fully close leaving a small gap that does not interfere with its role as an end table. Meticulously hand crafted with contrasting hardwood inlays in an overall diagonal checkerboard pattern and dating from the Meiji period. C1878. During the Meiji period. Parquetry was produced mainly in the centers of Shizuoka and Hakone. The“yosegi” technique was a decoration which relied on the inherent beauty, grain and natural colors of various kinds of wood primarily zelkova and mulberry. Marquetry and Parquetry furniture was mainly produced in Shizuoka rather than Hakone and first appeared when sent to the main world exhibitions. The Welt Ausstellung in Vienna in 1873, the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition in 1876, and the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1878 and are recorded as having been actively involved in the world exhibitions until 1893. Since the Exhibitions. Items such as this appear to vanish from records and had all but disappeared by 1900 and therefore marquetry and parquetry furniture seems to have been produced over quite a short 20 year period. Antique Spinet Desk either 1830's or 1920's
Gorgeous spinnet desk. Appears to be either as early as the 1830's or as late as the 1920's. The legs, very ornate, actually crew into the base(which is why I suspect it could be from the 1830's period or earlier, however they did also make these with screw in legs in the 20's but the legs were simpler and less ornate) It had been carefully stripped when I bought it and I stained it with a light colored stain but it has not been finished any further. The top opens, the drawer opens, and the are two drawers on either side inside the base that open in addition to cubbies and an upper, small drawer inside the base as well. Antique 1800's counter top slant desk for a country store. Etc. I believe that it's all original with the original outside finish and interior light green paint. The wood is walnut, popular back in the old days. The early desk hardware is pictured in photos# 3 and# 8. Photo#9 shows the pencil or pen holder that extents the whole inside front. In photo#4 the hole for an early ink well can be seen. It measures about 26 inches wide, about 20 1\4 inches deep and about 8 1\2 inches high in back and about 6 1\2 inches high in front. The slant front with aging has a couple of cracks from the wood drying over the many years. Antique Drafting Table Pics show condition. One cross bar has a crack(solid) Functional. Sturdy. No wobble. No Maker's Mark. Difficult to date. Circa 1900. Top measures 42" wide by 31" deep. Dovetail. Tongue and groove, set cross beams under the entire length of the top. Estate sale find. Talked to the owner and it was used as a lectern at the University of Chicago until 1950. Original German Antique School Desk. All wood construction. Metal hardware. Includes Inkwell marked with"D.R.G.M. The acronym D.R.G.M. stands for Deutsches Reichsgebrauchsmuster, meaning that the design or function of an item was officially registered inside all of Germany. This registration was introduced 1891, used throughout World Wars I and II and throughout the Allied Occupation of Germany being eliminated between 1949-1952. This desk is at least sixty years old or more! It is in fantastic condition! This was aquired in Germany in the late 1990's. Buyer needs to arrange for shipping/transportation/or local pickup. Small table top or lap desk made in the 19th century/1800's. Purchased at a NH estate sale. The dark coloring of the pine and the fine dovetailing of the joints indicate that it was most likely made in the 1800's. The nails which hold the base to the top are hand cut and the hinges are brass. The double hinged lift top is unique. The inside is clean. The base is square, measuring 14 1/2" x1 4 1/2" It is 7" deep at the back and 3 1/2" deep at the front. The locking mechanism has long been missing but there is no damage around the keyhole. Antique J S Ford Johnson Pressed Spindle Back Desk Chair Caned Bottom Pedestal VGC 100 yrs old. LOCAL PICK UP ONLY The metal adjustment pedestal has the name J.S. Ford Johnson Chicago on two of the pieces. JS Ford Johnson pedestal chair. Ford Johnson Company went out of business in 1913. This chair is at least 100 years old. It has a caned bottom. I replaced this 30+ years ago. It is still in good condition with no holes or broken pieces. Chair swivels and has an adjustment pedestal to lower and raise and adjust how far back you can lean. It has Bassick casters on it. I believe they are original to the chair. Everything on the chair is original but the seat. The chair was refinished about 45 to 50 years ago by my husband. It has some scuffed areas as you will see in the pictures. Some on the back as in picture 2. Near the head crown on the ... moreright as you look at the chair, and some on the legs near where the casters are. Overall look of chair is good. The scuffing does not detract. There is a 1 1/4" split where the right arm attaches to the back. just above and to the right of top screw) As you can see in picture 5 there is a screw holding part of the pedestal assembly to the chair bottom. I think the hole for this screw was too large to secure it from the bottom. So someone made a hole on the top and secured it that way. Although the chair was caned when we got it, I think it may have had a leather seat originally. I am not sure because I have tried to find a picture of this chair and haven't had any luck yet. I do know cane and rush was used by this company. They were quite well know for quality furniture as you will find if you search their name. There is a beautiful pressed in pattern of what seems to be the face of a king with a crown on it. Also there is scroll work and decorative trim. Spindles on arms and back. Chair works well. Refinished antique manual typerwriter desk
This has been refinished black with light distressing around the edges and on the body. With 3 coats of satin polyurethane it also has new knobs. It was onced used for a manual typewriter but now it can be used for a lap top, it sits in the shelf area once you finished it folds back into the desk out of the way. Somewhere along its life someone added some finishing nails& removed a drawer divider from about half way back. Lock assy(NO KEY) is all brass except for the throw which appears to be steel and measures 1" x 1/8" thick. Lock assy measures 1 3/4 x 2 3/8 x 1/2" thick. It is 29-1/4" to desk top when opened. H.E. Shaw Company was in operation in Grand Rapids from 1911 until 1933. Has 2 drawers and 10 cubby holes. Has lockable top. But I don't have a key for it. There was a repair made under one corner with metal braces, I guess it was wobbly. It is solid now, no problems. It has a satin finish on it now or you can recoat it if you want shiny. Antique Wooton Rotary Desk
Here I have an S curved Wooten Rotary desk made in the 1880s. It is made of solid oak and finished all the way around. The back is just as nice as the front so you can put it in the middle of the room if you like. It has cubbies and drawers on the desk top. Three drawers at your lap, a pull out writing board on either side and as you can see, two compartments that swivel out at the front corners. This desk is wonderful. I was told that it came from the Jim Wright family. I talked to a friend of Mr. Wright's and he does remember his father and mother loving antiques and having a roll top. Mr. Jim Wright studied law and became Speaker of the House in 1986. In 1989 he was elected Mayor of our Weatherford Texas. I actually worked for him during the Vietnam War mailing out flyers for our service men. This desk is in great condition with original ... morefinish. It is solid and heavy and is on rollers. This is a two-piece secretary which makes moving it a whole lot easier. What caught my eye on this piece was it was a davenport desk. But instead of the typical slant front, this one has a secretary section on top. This is not a married piece, these two started life together, guaranteed. Here is the best SOLID OAK antique American roll top desk I have seen in many years. It was recently purchased from a local estate of a woman who had been in the antique business since the 1960's. I remember visiting her shop which was super interesting with lots of nooks and crannies filled with beautiful and out of the ordinary mostly American antiques. This desk was purchased in 1969 by a man who ended up as her husband and it remained in their family until now. Apparently. As the story goes, he was a student then and could not afford to buy the desk so he worked it off by doing odd jobs and helping around the shop. Everything is original from the finish to the locking system for the drawers and lock set and sliding locking mechanism for the top to the castors to the drawer slides to the fabric on the tambour door to the hardware and ... moredrawer pulls. There are four drawers with the shell carved handles on one side and three drawers and four handles on the other side as the bottom drawer is the double door.
