An incredible accomplishment. The foundry work executed in this piece is above reproach- each gilt bronze mount is hand chased to the highest quality, mercury gilded and of outstanding detail. An angular and commanding work, the Armoire is surmounted by a triangular crest that is removable from the body with two dowels on either side- this is flanked by a pair of carved mahogany(replaced) finials. Beneath the projecting crown molding, an incredible gilt bronze mount of an angel riding through ocean waves in a cornucopia pulled along by swans while leaving behind a trail of shells is simply stunning. Flanking this on either side are opposing gilt bronze solider masks. The top is removable. Lifting off of large steel screws inside of the armoire to allow the door to be lifted from it's hinges for easier transportation. On either side of the door, pedestaled on large tapered columns rest large and highly impressive patinated and gilt bronze Classical female heads with bowed ribbon holding her hair back. These are the largest mounts of flawless execution we've seen on a piece from this period, each a stunning work of art in it's own merit. A hand filed steel screw secures each head to the case. Beneath the column, intense gilded Lion Paw's in the Regency manner complete the form. The arched door swings open with use of the original key. Revealing a golden oak interior of four shelves and a single locking drawer. This drawer is hand dovetailed with solid oak secondary woods, when removed revealing an illegible signature in period script along the dust board. Affixed to the top of the armoire on the inside is an old bill of lading from Lawsonia Manufacturing Company in Philadelphia, noting it's sale of an"Exist. The Hale home was on the Marietta Historical Registry as a way-station for the"Underground Railway, shelter for escaped slaves en-route to Canada, prior to and during the Civil War) Shortly after World War II, about 1947 the city condemned the home to make room for a major highway. Armoires were often built into homes as a small clothes closet. When the home was being torn down, the Hale family removed the 84x42x17 closet and took it to Newport, Ohio, 35 miles north for Grandma Hale's use in her small bed-room in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Catey, and family. It is QUITE UNUSUAL with ornate metal work on ALL 4 CORNERS on the TOP of the chest.as well as ALL 4 CORNERS on the FRONT of the chest. Both front doors also have a metal SHIELD decoration and one side has a key lock which I do not have the key for. Nor do I know if it works.but looks very classy with all the Victorian Fancy Hardware. When opened. It reveals 3 drawers ~ 1 larger bottom one and 2 smaller side ones. It also has an open space to the right of the smaller drawers. The HANDLES on the 3 drawers are ORNATE with UNUSUAL DROP BAIL PULLS! ONE pull is MISSING. There is one pull which is unattached and as there is some metal damage to the 2 other handles. It will need some fixing.but still acceptable for its age in my opinion. Back is made of 2 pieces of wood and is not split. Just age seperation. The bottom is covered in old felt. CONDITION: ONE SIDE of the cabinet/chest has a center split in the wood. There appears to have been some work on the side that is split.I think it is all original with reinforcing screws.but because this is not my area of

Genuine French country antique. Wonderful rich patina with a clear wax finish. I purchased this cabinet in France many years ago and I have been using it for storage in an unfitted kitchen. I was told it was an old food cabinet. Reluctantly for sale due to kitchen remodel and shortage of space! The doors. Sides and front are all solid oak. There are splits on the left side of the cabinet. As seen in the pictures, due to contraction and expansion over the years with humidity changes. There are other hairline cracks as one would expect in a piece this size and age but it just adds to the rustic charm. Please look at the pictures carefully. The interior is lighter in color and has 3 adjustable newer pine shelves that sit in the wood grooves with metal braces. The bottom of the cabinet looks newer than the main body. The top of the cabinet. As ... moreviewed from above, has a couple of old worm holes and a 2 inch hole that can been seen only from the inside when you look up. The back of the cabinet frame is oak with old pine panels. Each door has a decorative metal vent. I do not know what type of metal it is but it has a dark patina. It measures 84" high. 50" top corner of cornice across. Almost 48" wide across flat front. 46" wide interior. 21" deep to top cornice. 20" deep outside flat. 18" deep inside. It is from the Ching Dynasty late 1700's and made from Ju Mu(Elm Wood) It still has all the original hardware. The cabinet has beautifully(camphor wood) carved panels in both doors. Just the panels by it self are worth buying this interesting piece of Chinese antique. The interior accommodates 2 drawers. Located within the main shelf. Antique Chinese Working as an Engineer in China left me with ample free time to pursue my Joy of Asian antiquities. Traveling Mainland China in the pursuit of unique pieces. Each piece has been hand picked. I utilized artisans in Zhongshan. China for minor restorations such as hardware. Paint and paintings. Each piece was wrapped in bubble wrap and then cardboard for shipment to the USA. Super sized moisture packs were made and utilized in the ship containers to reduce the moisture content which destroys these treasures. Each piece is a GENUINE antique. Pieces were acquired from local flea markets. Estate sales and mostly direct from individual households.
