These are the real deal! No reproduction! Pair of absolutely gorgeous Staffordshire dogs from the 1800's. Hand painted. Beautiful gold chain around their necks. This set has the separated front legs which is hard to find. There is no painting on the backs. They were designed this way because they are meant to sit on a mantle with their backs against the wall. One dog has had a repair on one of its front legs that is so minor it could not be picked up by the camera. These dogs are in excellent condition. If you have any questions feel free to ask. I will answer them to the best of my ability. The shipping charge on these is a little higher than normal because they will be packed EXTRA EXTRA carefully and will be double boxed. This fine pair of English pottery Staffordshire King Charles Disraeli Spaniels are crisp in their molding and have wonderful expressions. They are in mint condition- c1850. While English pottery figural groups; single figures and animals were made during the later part of the 18th Century. Animals however. Really came into vogue during the reign of Queen Victoria(1837-1901) These"comforters" as they were called were an integral part of the Victorian English household. Dogs, particularly King Charles Spaniels, were especially popular. Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli who served Queen Victoria as Prime Minister. Was a great dandy and paid special attention to his hair, always sporting a carefully groomed central forehead curl. Consequently, the affectionate name, Disraeli" has endeared itself to the model of Spaniels that have ... morecurly hair on their forehead. Staffordshire figures and animals were made by many different potters and factories and were rarely signed. They were potted from simple two-piece press moulds. Once dry. The moulds were placed together and thin rolls of clay were inserted to seal the seams inside. The next step was to make a small hole, usually on the base, so that air was able to escape during the firing process. After the first firing, the figures were painted with underglaze colors and then dipped into a liquid glaze and refired. Once this process was completed, the figures were then painted with enamel, overglaze, colors and any gilding required and then fired a final time. Due to the deposits of clay left in the moulds, the average mould's life would not last for more than 100 figures without severe loss of quality. This is one way to tell the age of the figure, the cleaner and crisper, the earlier it was produced in the mold's life. The more often the mold was used, the less the quality of the figure produced. These dogs appear to me to be spaniels(feel free to send me your corrections! In either case. They feature black and white coloring, with yellow detail near their noses and gold detail on their collars. They each stand alert. One with head to the left and the other to the right. They would look great on either end of a mantle or a bookshelf! This lovely pair came to us with badly damaged eyes. They have been replaced with brown acrylic eyes that fit the pieces much better. These pieces are English and date to about the mid-1800's. Overall. The dogs are in good condition. They both have some crazing to the glaze, which one normally expects from Staffordshire pieces of this age. Medium Staffordshire Spaniels, Low Maintenance, Ca. 1870-90, Excellent Condition
Description: These medium sized Staffordshire spaniels have some very desirable attributes. They don't require veterinary care. You don't need to feed them, and the they don't shed hair or have a doggy smell. They measure 10 inches high, 7 inches wide and at the deepest point they are 4 inches. My guess is that these dogs date to about 1880-1900, but they could be a decade or two older. Condition: I am very picky with my condition reports as I know how critical this is to on-line bidders. These dogs show all-over wear to gold from normal handling. Glaze has light. Fine crazing in many areas. There are a few small spots where the painted decoration is missing. Otherwise in excellent condition with no hairlines, chips or scratches that I could find anywhere. Payment. Description: This is a very large and stately pair of Staffordshire dogs with their original glass eyes. They stand 13 1/2 inches high and are 11 1/2 inches long. They were made in the second half of the 19th Century. My best guess would be ca. 1870-80. Please check out my other pair of medium sized dogs up for auction. Condition: I have provided several photos of the same pose taken with different apetures and shutter speeds to help in describing these dogs. Staffordshire Victorian Spaniels Statues - 1850-1880 - Mantel Pair Dogs
This gorgeous pair of mantle dogs was hand crafted and hand painted in England of Staffordshire white clay in the mid to late 1800's. This pair shows such detail and character. Typical of the early Staffordshire dogs. Notice their whiskers resemble mustaches. They each stand about 9" tall. And measure about 9 inches in length and 4 1/2" in width. They have separated front legs and paws, and are unmarked except for a small hole in the bottoms. I see no chips, cracks or other issues. There is some minor crazing which you must look hard to see. Darling Pair of White Staffordshire King Charles Spaniels
For your consideration is this darling pair of what I assume to be Staffordshire Cavalier King Charles Spaniel figurines. I purchased these at a lovely shop in Arundel on the south coast of England about ten years ago. Each little pooch measures approximately 3.5 inches long and stands 2.5 inches tall. The dogs are crafted from a white pottery with a white glaze and grey undertones under the"furry" bit of the tail and ears. I am unsure of the age of the pieces but I can attest to their charm.
