Please scroll down the page to see additional photographs of this item. GUSTAFSBERG 1895 PARIAN VIKING-STEERSMAN FIGURE Presented is a wonderful Gustafsburg parian figure of a Viking-Steersman. The statue is done in outstanding details in parian. A type of hard French porcelain that closely resembles marble. The Viking leans against the serpentine figure of the helm of his vessel. He holds the tiller steady in one hand as he shades his eyes with the other to gaze out at the horizon. He props one leg on a well-articulated coil of rope at his feet. The planks of the ship, the texture of the braided rope, and the details of the Viking's hair, clothing, face and hands are all beautifully done with astonishingly realistic detail. His belt and the fastenings for his tunic are all nicely done, and clearly some thought went into the design of ... morehis clothing. The statue was made by Swedish Gustavsberg porcelain manufacture during their early period. The statue is marked on the reverse with GUSTAFSBERG for the maker and the date 95 for 1895. The condition is excellent. The statue is beautifully clean and white for its age. The very tip of one wing on the helmet and about half of the other wing are missing. But these are not very noticeable except on close inspection. The eye is drawn more to the Viking himself and his intent gaze. There are no other breaks, no cracks, no splits, no dents, no chips and no repairs. The statue stands approximately 12 inches wide. 8 inches deep and 21 inches tall. Know for being the first person to have swum the English Channel in August of 1875. From Dover to Calais, a distance of 40 miles in 21 hours and 45 minutes. Excellent quality and detailing. The back reads" Swan from Dover to Calais Capt n Webb Time 21 3/4 Hours" This bust shows him wearing two me dals. The first being the Royal Humane Society Stanhope Medal( the first recipient) for his attempted rescue of a seaman from the Atlantic Ocean and the second. The Liverpool Humane Society Medal. He was later awarded the newly designed Stanhope medal which is not shown on this bust. This is a beautiful rare antique parian porcelain figure of a lovely woman representing the continent of Africa. She is wearing a panther or lion snood and an alligator rests at her feet. Very finely modeled. She stands approximately 15 1/2 inches high. Overall condition is very good. There is some pitting/dark spotting to the porcelain which occurred throughout the years. She does not have any information on the item as it was given to her several years ago as a gift. She did display it in a glass cabinet. I looked it over& I don't see any cracks or chips or damage. There is however a small black dot on the sculptor's left foot which you can see in some of the pictures. I believe the mark is in the glaze it self. But I am not 100% sure. The bottom of the base has a partial"Original Arnart" sticker. But I don't know from which country this item was made. The portion of the sticker with the country name is torn off. Condition is excellent with all fingers and toes intact which is very hard to find in these pieces.the only thing I can find is a tiny flake or flaw on the base which I have pictured next to a pencil tip for you to see the size.its very small and hardly noticible.but im picky.The piece has a beautiful creamy white color and is not stained.Nice early model and in great shape.

Victorian Early Parian figure of Dorothea by Minton / John Bell - Circa 1850
This is a fine piece of Parian by Minton. The subject is Dorothea and it was modeled by John Bell. Measurements: 14 inches in height. Condition: the is in good condition with age appropriate wear. There are two known issues. There is a chip to Dorothea's cap on her left shoulder. Also. It appears her shoe was reattached in an early repair. See photos for more detail. Base is marked"Minton" and"189" for the model number. On the side. It has the Minton moulded marks applied in relief including the Felix Summerly and John Bell cartouche in use circa 1847-9. And it has the registered diamond indicating that this design was registered at the Patent Office on Oct. 4, 1847. A large. Good quality, Victorian, parian porcelain figure of Dick Whittington as a young boy. He is seated at the side of a milestone which reads, IV miles to London" and titled"Dick Whittington" at the front of the base plinth. Impressed"S29" to the rear of the plinth. Dating to the second half of the 19th Century and based on the original sculpture by Charles Bell Birch, that was exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851, at Crystal Palace. The Figure is entitled"Solitude" and depicts a beautiful partially nude Young Maiden with a Stork Bird beside her. The Figure is impressed Art Union of London 1852 along with J. Lawlor Sculp(tor) The Figure is not marked but this is a well known Parian Figure and I have seen others being sold as Minton by large Auction Houses. The Figure is in good all original condition with a small loss to the Stork's Beak. A chip to the base and some original firing cracks to the base, which is often found on such large examples. The Figure is very large and most impressive, measuring 20-1/2" tall by 9-1/2" wide by 7-1/2" deep approximately. The Figure could also use a good cleaning but we prefer to leave everything as original as it came from the Estate.
