SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Height: 278 millimeters(11 1/8 inches) Length: 232 millimeters(9 1/3 inches) Breadth: 99 millimeters(4 inches) Base: 150 x 74 millimeters(6 inches x 3 inches) 12 millimeters(1/2 inch) in thickness. CONDITION: Very good. Minor porcelain chips. There are minor chips in the porcelain glaze at the rider’s right front shoulder; to the rider’s waist, behind, center; to the back side of the horse’s right leg; at the edge of the horse’s stomach, right side, center; and at the rider’s left elbow. There is as well a scattering of minute porcelain chips throughout, and the top of the horse’s right ear is also chipped. Other than cleaning, there has been no restoration work. The minor chips could be repaired, without additional cost, if you would like our conservator to repair the chips. There remains some mild soil adhesions, small areas where soil still adheres to the statuette, despite our best efforts to clean away all soil adhesions. Of course the paint has decomposed and is powdery in those areas where the statuette was merely painted(not glazed) the rider’s head, boot, and hands. And the putto is a separate piece joined. After casting, to the lower base. It also appears that the left arm may have also been a separately molded piece. Finally ~ there are two tiny air release holes at the back of the sculpture. All these clues speak of this being an early and finely made piece. It's marked Wohlfahrts-steingut in auftrag gegeben von ihrer Königlichen Hoheit der grossherzogin von Hessen und bei Rhein. That more or less means this is a piece of stoneware commissioned by her Royal Highness the Grand Duchess of Hessen and bei Rhein. The ceramic is only 4 inches(10cm) high. It has a small cherub with a bouquet of blue flowers over her shoulder. The base is a grayish color. It was designed by Ernst Riegel and dates to about 1912. No chips or cracks. I'm not sure of the material used to make her, as she feels solid, but not very heavy, but I'm guessing resin, gesso,plaster. The figurine is a concrete gray in color and it sits on a antiqued gold color base. The detail of the roses and the Putto's angelic face are very pretty. Measures approx: 3 1/2" wide, 8 1/2" tall and has no mark. It appears to have had a label, but someone removed it in it's past life. Cute Putto figurine for the collector! It looks very similar to a Niloak or Camark pottery piece because of the weight, shallow details and glaze. Maybe someone out there knows and will tell me.
