Latin scholars refer to it as Liber Chronicarum (Book of Chronicles) as this phrase appears in the index introduction of the Latin edition. English-speakers have long referred to it as the Nur.

1541 Bible, Pre-Trent & Heretical, 160 woodcuts Incunable Inkunabel Latin Vellum
Sale ends this Monday-June 23! This rare and wonderful 1541 Bible is complete. With the Old and New Testaments, including the Table of Contents. It was in use when both Protestant Martin Luther and John Calvin were spreading the Protestant Reformation throughout western Europe. What's most remarkable about this Bible(and why most pre-1546 Bibles are so valuable) is that after the Council of Trent. They issued a new authorized version of the Latin Vulgate that left out certain books considered Deuterocanonical such as Ezra 3 and 4. On page 205, a priest or scholar wrote"None approbotus iste Esilio( liber a Concilio Ciedentinco( a clear reference to Ezra 4 since two"x" marks can be found next to the top and bottom of Ezra 4. The fact that this Bible was not destroyed was probably due to the fact that it was purchased by leaders ... morein the Dominican order and housed in a Dominican library. As evidenced by the two Dominican library stamps on the inside. After the Council of Trent, this Bible would have been considered unauthorized at best and heretical at worst by some of the leaders in the Inquisition. It's preservation is probably in part due to the fact that it ended up in the hands of the Dominicans. The order given the primary responsibility for carrying out the Inquisition. This pre-Tridentine Bible is also valuable because of it's small 8vo size. 18.5 x 12.6 x 4 cm. Small Bibles were rather rare, relatively expensive, and produced primarily for clergy and wealthy aristocrats and pious merchants. Unlike many pre-1550 Bibles which are often tattered with broken or loose bindings. This Bible's binding is in full calf vellum and is sturdy, tight, and exceptionally strong. This Bible also includes over 165 highly detailed and intricate woodcut engravings possibly by the famous engraver and printer Hans Sebald Beham(1500-1550) There are about 80 woodcuts in the Old Testament and 85 in the New Testament with over twenty in the Gospel of Matthew. The mysterious book of Revelation is also ric

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Hand rubricated in red. Lots of worming, glue on reverse from a previous mount(see photos) From the first printed edition of Augstine’s Liber Epistolarum(or Epistolae) published most likely and no later than 1471 by Johan(nes) Mentelin in Strassburg Germany(the first printer of a Bible not in Latin.he made the first German language Bible as well as a variety of Augustine’s important works. For the first time, in print, in Latin) I found one other dealer offering a leaf from this same book for: $750.00 A complete illuminated copy of the book sold at Christie's for $116.000 A leaf from the FIRST EDITION of this collection ... moreof letters by one of the most influential Fathers of the Latin Church. In a printed advertisement for this edition. Mentelin praised the letters as a work in which"the skill of human eloquence resounds, many difficult and obscure passages of sacred scripture are clearly explained, heresies and deviations from the right faith are crushed with the solid hammer of truth, rules for right living are set forth, virtues are demonstrated, and vices are justly reproved" cf. BMC) In the late 1460s and early 1470s Mentelin published a number of patristic and theological works, including an edition of Augustine's De civitate dei in 1468. The date of this edition of the Epistolae is derived from the rubrication inscription in the Tegernsee copy now in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek. Leaves from the early 1470s are scarce; this one was printed just seventeen years after the very first book was printed using movable type.

Written in Latin by Hartmann Schedel. With a version in German translation by Georg Alt, it appeared in 1493. After graduating, he led a restless, wandering life, partly in the service of the Republic of Venice, at the court of the Duke of Milan, at the Curia in Rome, etc. Mostly, however, serving as professor at various Italian universities. In 1420 he accompanied the Venetian ambassador to Constantinople, where he was employed by the Byzantine emperor with important missions. In Constantinople he studied Greek. In 1423 he met with the Greek Emperor John Palaeologus in Buda, and spent several months at Sigismund's court. In February 1424 he accompanied the Polish King Sigismund to his wedding in Cracow, where he gave speeches on humanism. 1427 he returned to Venice, bringing a number of Greek codices. After teaching at the University of Bologna, he was one of Lorenzo de Medici's scholars- he was given a chair for the reading of Dante's Divina Commedia. But for allegedly hostile interpretations of the text his position in Florence became problematic. 1433 he escaped an assassination attempt, and he left the city. Lorenzo

Magnificent. Early Incunable Robertus Carocciolus Sermons. 1479 With 71 Large Red& Blue Initials! Description This is a beautiful. Very early incunable 1479 edition of the famous Franciscan Roberto Caracciolo’s sermons, decorated with 71 red and blue 7-line decorative initials and literally hundreds of 3-line red initials, along with thousands of red single line initials. It was printed only 16 years after Gutenberg published the first printed Bible! The Franciscan preacher and bishop of Aquino. Roberto Caracciolo(d. 1495) was a prolific sermon writer. His homiletic collections circulated widely throughout eastern and western Europe and so popular was his work that his books were best sellers of their time. He was also known as the“second Paul” because of the popularity of his teaching tours throughout Italy. His sermons were generally ... moreon living the Christian life(i.e. sins, virtues, vices, grace, sacraments, judgment, etc. and his focus was devoted to penitential themes aimed at moving his Christian audience to humility in the face of God, and humble service to others. The book opens with Part II. Sermones de adventu etc. and is complete in 112 leaves(A8-O8) Then 24 leaves of the last 6 sermons(they are complete) from Part I( Sermones quadragesimales de poenitentia etc) P1-8 thru S8) and finishes with Part III( Sermones de timore divinorum iudiciorum etc. Complete in 76 leaves(aa8-ii12) All decorated with red and blue Lombard initials and Gothic text in two columns.
