Kuna Mola Blouse - ex Parker Neal Collection - Whale and Turtle Spirits
Mola Blouse With Whale and Turtle Spirits- Collected by Ann Parker and Avon Neal. Wild and colorful. This complete mola blouse portrays the spirits of a whale and a turtle- depicted in the form of birds- rising out of the back of the two creatures. The designs of the animals and spirits is really fun with a lot of hard-to-execute small diamond motifs, circles and bullet-shaped motifs. Note the cool hair on the whale's spirit bird(one side only) and the cool embroidered bird-eyes. The secondary plant motifs are also interesting. Great provenance. The brass pieces are heavy cast, very ornate, 1" x 1 1/2" Belt is 28.5" long and 1 1/2" wide. I have not polished as it has a lovely aged patina but if so desired should polish up beautifully. AXE: CEREMONIAL. MAYAN, CENTRAL YUCATAN, NEAR COBA RUINS SITE
AXE: CEREMONIAL. MAYAN. CENTRAL YUCATAN. NEAR COBA RUINS SITE. Length: 9 1/2" Width: 1 1/2" to 4" Thick: 3/4" Weight: 1 lb 1 oz A very rare. Clearly ceremonial axe from the Mayan Yucatan. Made from a dark green. Hardstone, this astonishing axe was carved from one piece of stone. It was recovered in the late 1800s and eventually. Found its way into an Illinois collection. This axe was recovered from a mound in the jungle near the ancient site of Coba. This example is 13 3/8 inches long; 5 3/4 inch celt length. And is made of a green chloritic material or greenstone. The upper end of the handle tapers to a rounded end, with three incised grooves carved on each side extending about half way down toward the celt. The intriguing attribute of this artifact is its carving from one slab of stone. It appears to have characteristics ... moreof a small celt-axe with what is known as a"slave killer"the three indented ridges along the opposite side. A rare and fascinating piece of this ancient Mayan culture. On Jun-28-13 at 17:05:26 PDT. Seller added the following information:

This makes them fragile and they may suffer from some surface damage over time. This effigy has the essence of the spirit represented, you can tell the difference from the modern tourist ... morepottery being produced today. This particular pot measures from 3” to 6” in diameter and is 4 ½” tall, and is in excellent condition. The bottom is a deeper ochre yellow and the browns in the geometric pattern are bold and dark. Superb Amazonian Terracotta Female Figure
This a beautiful Amerindian( armless female figure with wide hips. Is somewhat reminiscent in style of classic goddess statuary. The torso is painted with decorative tribal patterns/tattoos in black and wears a vegetable fiber loin cloth. I believe that this figure may be from the Amazonian areas of Peru or Ecuador. But I am not 100% sure. A truly SUPERB piece! Dimensions: 6 1/2" x 2 1/4" x 6" at hips) From a private collection and is in excellent condition. Brutalist Triangular Trinket Box Gold & Silver Color Metals, Old Primitive
Looks similar to antique Chinese boxes I have seen with same shape and size. However. This one is lacking any Asian motifs or figural or floral imagery and may be Latin/ Central American or from the Middle East. North Africa(Tunisa, Morroco) I have no idea. I believe I may have bought it on a trip to Central America but really don't remember where I bought this or how much I paid. It is definitely handmade and has a good bit of age to it based upon the patina on the metals used. Primitive or brutalist design. Fabulous 1960's Kuna Spiderweb Mola, ex Kit Kapp Collection
Museum Quality"Tipa" Spider in Web) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. This is a great example of why I think that molas are the pinnacle of folk art textiles. The faces on the three weird little spiders could provide a powerful graphic definition of the phrase"folk art. Crude and sophisticated. Fun and scary, and well, just plain odd. The abstract spider web is wild and colorful. Very good condition. A very collectible piece. From one of the great early mola collections. 20.5" x 16" The Kit Kapp Collection. Like many of the molas I sell. This on is from the collection of Kit Kapp, who mapped the San Blas Islands from 1960 to 1970, and wrote one of the first English-language books on molas. 1960's Kuna Child's Mola, ex Kit Kapp Collection - Abstract Firefans
Pikpi(Firefans) Child's Mola collected by Kit Kapp. Many modern molas are about this size- but when this one was made. In the 1960s, one of this size would have been for a young girl. I double that a child made it, however, because the workmanship is spectactular, with smooth even lines and"invisible" stitching. Graphically very pleasing, two-layer abstract molas like this represent a very under-appreciated art form. From one of the great early mola collections. 15" x 11.5" The Kit Kapp Collection. Like many of the molas I sell. This on is from the collection of Kit Kapp, who mapped the San Blas Islands from 1960 to 1970, and wrote one of the first English-language books on molas. Rare School Numbers Kuna Mola, ex Kit Kapp Collection
Escuela Trabajo(School Work) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. Starting in the first decade of the 20th century. Catholic and Baptist missionaries began setting up schools in an attempt to"civilize" the Kuna Indians. The mathematics classes taught in these schools inspired a number of molas because the Kuna girls liked the shape of the numbers- they were good visual material for use in a mola. This example of an"escuela" mola features wonderful, folky, colorful numbers in a wild sort of grid. A very cool piece. I've never seen another quite like it. Pretty good condition considering its age, with some minor roughness on some top-layer sections. From one of the great early mola collections. 19" x 14.5" The Kit Kapp Collection. Like many of the molas I sell. This on is from the collection of Kit Kapp, who mapped ... morethe San Blas Islands from 1960 to 1970, and wrote one of the first English-language books on molas.
