The surface shows that the mask has been painted several times. It also demonstrates some age and extensive use. It is unclear if the mask was worn on the face or on the head as there is no indication of eyes. The male figure is shown holding a container in each hand. The female lifts her breasts. In a gesture commonly found on Yoruba sculpture. Among the Yoruba Gelede masks dance of the âmothersâ. Good witches who propitiate and control the power of the âbadâ witches who fly at night causing human misfortune, illness, and death. This well formed game stone is a fine addition to any collection of Hawaiian Artifacts. The second Ulumaika is made from coral. Coral Ulumaikas are rarer than stone ulumaika. It is about 2.75” in diameter and 1.75” at the widest width. It has a very old line“scar” that runs about 1.5” on one of the sides. This“scar” is probably a finders mark in that it scared when a piece of equipment was excavating a cane field. Damage/Repair, worn cloth, Additional Information: A finely carved face mask embellished with red and white paints. Its perimeter is surrounded with cotton cloth and plaited vegetal fibers The use of cotton cloth and the red paint are unusual for the Lwena. But the coffee-bean eyes, the pointed nose as well as the fine mouth are of Lwena style. Isolated groups of Lwena have historically settled alongside, and mingled with, villages in the southern DRC, so it is not too surprising to see one of their African masks display sparse Congo minimalism more aligned to the Lega and Lele than the artistically formal Angolan groups, like the Chockwe. This attribution is by no means a given, but the charm and surprising power of this African mask is undeniable. It is a fascinating example of the profound and far-reaching influence of masking traditions from the southern Congo. This mask would add some colors to a collection. The Lwena people. Neighbors of the well-known Chokwe people, share much with the Chokwe in the forms of their art and culture, however Lwena art is less varied consisting primarily of masks and female figures. Antique 1920s-30s Christian Saint, Rabinal, Baja Verapaz, Guatemala Wooden Mask
I purchased this from an antique dealer whom purchased from the estate of: a noted Seattle[Washington] antique and art collector" Per the tag. The antique dealer suggested it was from 1806. I was never fully under the disillusionment that this mask was 207 years old. However, I did think it was perhaps as old as the 1850s. The reference to 1806 is in all likelihood a cataloging number. Seller number, or otherwise and was never meant to be the date. Upon the Saint's arrival to my home I noticed that the reverse of the mask was bored out using traditional carving techniques as well as the use of a modernized 1 inch(power tool) drill bit. That all said. Giving the drill bit technology and the style of the mask, I reasonably believe this mask is likely from the 1920s- 1930s. Its likely too much of a stretch to think turn of the century. ... moreStill. This mask would therefore be approximately 80-90 years old. The mask easily has 3-4 layers of paint(this is best noted by the chip on the lower left side of the chain- see pics) This is a common practice of the rental shops in Guatemala and expected for a mask of this age in my opinion. Its my belief that the variations in the blue 5 o-clock shadow are just that. touch-ups by the rental shop. In contrast however. A collector along the way likely tried to stop the cracking in the paint by adding a few touches of clear-coat which over time that have since yellowed. In traditional style the nostrils have blood dripping from them The gold on the mask upon close in-person inspect does have faint flakes/sparkles to it. Tag on the reverse is likely from the 1950s-60s and is likely original to the Seattle collector. String is not original to the mask. Four holes for string on the sides of the mask. One at the top to hang it at the rental shop. The mitre(hat) has a lovely 3-dimensional feel. Smooth arch to it. very well done. It has a very floppy/fabric look to it. FACE/BODY VESSEL. GAYO POLYCHROME, AD 500- 1000. GUANACASTE PROVINCE. COSTA RICA Height: 9 3/4" Width: 7 1/2" Outer Rim Diameter: 5" Weight: 3lbs 9.7 oz This is a RARE. And currently, impossible to get tripod leg face vessel from the Nicoya region of Costa Rica's Guanacaste Province-on the northwestern side of the country facing the Pacific Ocean. This pot is in excellent condition! There are no repairs. No known cracks, indents, cuts. This globular pot with long neck features a relief-extended shut-eyed face with arms holding a tablet with strange markings on it: two vertical cluster of lines with a set of four horizontal between. It is done in the Gayo Polychrome style which dates it somewhere between AD 500 and 1000. Beautiful red-orange glaze is still present throughout the tan-brown base. On the rear are two kneeling ... morewarriors holding what appears to be a head with feather dress. Spirit like designs flow above this object. The entire motif on this pot screams satisfaction and/or release(as in death) from the front large-nosed serene face to the somewhat sad-faced. Eyes looking upwards kneeling warriors-a confusing mix of emotion that clearly needs the cultural context to understand what the hell is going on here. This cultural phase of Nicoya Polychrome ceramics took off: everyone apparently wanted what these artisans produced-they are found up/down the coast. But what is also known from this time-based on burial goods-is the existence of ritual specialists with shamanistic powers. This pot falls right into that category. It appears to be a ritualistic. Ceremonial vessel used in some fashion with death/sacrifice/contentment. What strange and bizarre customs did these people practice! But then again. Rare Mid to Late 19th Century Bolivian Aymara Manta (Ahuayo)
I am offering up for auction a rare. Beautifully woven Aymara textile from Bolivia. It is dyed with vegetal dyes and has been'conservatively' estimated by South American textile experts to have been woven sometime in the mid to late 19th century. It is a women's'manta' or lliclia(pronounced' yeekya' in Quechua or' ahuayo' in Aymara. The pictures do not do this piece justice. Despite 3 very small. Repairable holes, it is in amazing condition for its age. Warp faced plain weave in black and cochineal red dyed hand-spun alpaca or vicuna wool with complimentary bands of warp weave along the outer edge and centre in ochre. Golden brown, indigo, dark blue, white and cochineal. Measures 38" 96 cm. x 40" 1.01m) Bought many years ago at the estate sale of an anthropologist whose research focus from the ... more1930's through to the late 70's was South American indigenous tribal peoples. The Aymara existed in the Andes in what is now Bolivia and Peru for thousands of years. They were conquered by the Incas before the arrival of the Spanish and the Inca nobility originally spoke Aymara before later switching to Quechua. Both languages still survive today. How can we be sure of the age of this piece? Several reasons predominate: 1) The arrival of aniline dyes in South America had a profound effect on the Aymara. Women were quick to use dyes which were easier to produce than the more difficult to produce natural colours. Examples of their weaving collected in the 1880's were already beginning to show evidence of synthetic dyes. None here. 2) More recent examples of Aymara weaving show an increased use of figurative bands(i.e. designs with horses. Birds, flowers etc. The earlier pieces tended to stick to the representational verticality of the world in which they lived( a vast panorama of horizontal levels" according to Aymara historians. ANTIQUE LIDDED REED WRAPPED HANDMADE MEXICAN PICTORIAL BASKET FROM THE TOLUCA VALLEY REGION OF CENTRAL MEXICO. IT IS CONSTRUCTED OF EITHER REEDS OR PALM LEAVES. IT IS COMPLETELY COILED AND USES THE MARIPOSA STITCH. MORE INFO ON THESE BASKETS CAN BE FOUND AT BURKE MUSEUM on line. THIS BASKET IS AT LEAST 100 YEARS OLD. IT SHOWS TWO CHIEFS FACE TO FACE THERE IS ALSO A BRAVE ON A HORSE SHOOTING HIS BOW AND ARROW THERE IS ONE MORE SCENE AND I AM NOT QUITE SURE WHAT IT IS. THE ONLY FLAW I CAN SEE IS THAT THE HANDLES WERE HAND SEWN ON AT A LATER DATE WITH NEEDLE AND THREAD. AND EVEN THAT APPEARS VINTAGE. THE INSIDE COLORS ARE EXTREMELY VIBRANT. THE OUTSIDE COLORS NOT AS MUCH BUT STILL STRIKING. ALMOST 9' IN DIAMETER 5 1/2' HIGH WITH OUT THE LID. 7 12' HIGH WITH THE LID. I purchased this mask from the carver at the weekly market in the Plaza in Chichicastenango. Guatemala. It was in the early 1970s. During certain festivals the image of a conquering Spaniard is part of the parade and reinactment of the local history. For more than 40 years this fine gentleman has watched over me from an honored position in my home.
