SIZE(CM): 53/13.7 Sold without stand The remarkable masks of African art from the mask capture attention. One such mask is the Kru plate mask, which features ... moresix pairs of tubular eyes. This design is a representation of the commonly used expression in West Africa, "four eyes," which describes individuals with clairvoyant abilities. The mask showcases alternating polychromy and originates from the Kru, a group composed of twenty-four subgroups including the Grebo people. The Grebo reside in southern Liberia and southwestern Côte d'Ivoire, led by the bodio who lives in seclusion. Unlike other West African communities, the Kru do not adhere to the Poro society.

Title, Pygmy/Mbuti Barkcloth Ituri Rainforest DR Congo Africa, Type of Object, Barkcloth, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Pygmy/Mbuti, Materials, ... moreBark. Dyes, Approximate Age, 20th century, Dimensions, 31 inches x 18 inches, Overall Condition, Poor, Damage/Repair, Stains. Fraying of fibers, stretching, worn surface. Can be steamed or ironed-I have left this up to the buyer. These fascinating cloths with their simple abstract markings are made by the Mbuti people of Congo's Ituri rainforest. Additional information: The Mbuti people who live in the Ituri rainforest of Northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Formerly Zaire, are one of the few remaining hunter-gatherer cultures in the world. Since 3500 BC. They have been famed for their rich and extraordinary arts of music and dancing, but until recently, the barkcloth drawings and paintings made by Mbuti women have been virtually unknown in the West. Originally made as loincloths for ceremonies and dances. These drawings are sophisticated abstract compositions embodying the qualities of improvisation and syncopation that are associated with the African visual and musical sensibility. Pre Columbian or South American Pottery Bird Tucan?
When I found this at an estate I was told it was Pre Columbian. But to me it could be South American. The bird reminds me of a Tucan. Anyhow, this is really cool looking and needs to go to a good home! Overall size is about 5" x 4"
Antique Santo or Bulto San Francisco (St. Francis), Hand Carved
Antique Santo or Bulto San Francisco(St. Francis) Hand Carved Antique Santo or Bulto San Francisco(Saint Francis) Circa 1800s- early 1900s. Possibly older. Santos are Spanish colonial folk art saints. Bultos are Santos"in the round" I.e. carved from three dimensional cottonwood roots, pine wood, etc. Although today they are commonly defined as being from New Mexico, where they are still made, the art form originated in Spain and hence spread to all of their past colonies(where these older pieces are no longer as common) Provenance: This San Francisco is most probably from Guatemala; the elderly gentleman collector I purchased him from says that is where he purchased this piece a couple decades ago. He is executed in the traditional manner: hand carved wood with pegged together arms/appendages. Pegged onto a stand; covered in gesso, ... morehand painted, and varnished(probably with pine sap) San Francisco appears to have been pegged at the waist also(quite common) The waist joint is barely visible and still very tight. Condition: He shows the very typical wear and tear of age: rubbing off and/or chipping of the paint and gesso. Some crazing/crackling, minor cracking at some peg joints, etc. There does appear to be some white colored glue between the pegged hands and arms. Whether it is original or not I do not know, but it appears to be a more recent repair. He appears far older or much more used/touched or weathered than my San Pedro listing from the same collection, as much of his paint and gesso are worn down to the dark wood underneath. Size: The full statue measures 11 ½ in high by 4 in wide. San Francisco's body measures 9 ½ in. high(from robe bottom to top of head) by 3 in wide(from hand to hand) The base measures 3 7/8 in. long by 3 in wide by 2 in. tall. We pack all items with lots of care. However. We highly recommend adding insurance to your shipment in case an item is damaged or lost in transit. Please let us know if you want this before you pay so we can let you know how much it will c

RARE Restored Spanish Colonial Argentina Repose Silver Bull Horn Guampa Mate Cup
The bull horn on this beautiful piece has been restored. All else is original. Please look at the pictures to see the hand crafted designed on the German silver metal, and the size of this beautiful piece; it was sent to us for auction from one of the convents we work with. Mate during the Spanish Colonial period was sometimes served at our convents with a metal straw from a shared bull horn cup. The straw is called a bombilla in Latin American. The horn is known as a mate or a guampa. Even if the water is supplied from a modern thermos. The infusion is traditionally drunk from mates or cuias like the one on auction. As with other brewed herbs. Yerba mate leaves are dried, chopped, and ground into a powdery mixture called yerba. The bombilla acts as both a straw and a sieve. The submerged end is flared, with small holes or slots that allow ... morethe brewed liquid in, but block the chunky matter that makes up much of the mixture. Please see all of the pictures. Antique Mexican-New Mexican Carved-Painted Cross - Altar/ Anima Solas-Southwest
Mexican or New Mexican Bulto- Altar ~ 19th Century ~ Spanish Colonial Painted& Carved ~ please scroll down for more photos ~ SIZE: Height- 19" Width- 8.75" Depth- 5" DESCRIPTION: Very fine antique Mexican or New Mexican altar with carved figures and profusely painted with Christian- Spanish Colonial imagery. The altar is in the form of a Cross mounted on a stepped pedestal base and there are two carved and painted praying figures attached to the base at the bottom of the cross. Possibly Adam and Eve. The entire front of the piece is painted with images. As you can see. A crucified Jesus Christ is the main image, but there are also images of the Madonna, Saints, all sorts of symbolic tools and instruments, skulls and crossed bones, a deceased person wrapped in red cloth, and at the bottom, eight Anima Solas caught in the ... morefires of purgatory and surrounding a painting of Adam and Eve with the apple tree and serpent. This piece has more interesting images on one piece than I have ever seen. Probably Mexican in origin. But some of the faces look like the New Mexican style by Jose Rafael Aragon and the other Santeros in that Northern area. The piece appears to be quite old and I would guess that ir was made after 1850 but before 1900- maybe circa 1880's. On the unpainted bottom there is a nicely penciled name. Pablo" possibly the name of one of the owners over the years. This is a museum quality example of Hispanic- Latin American- Mexican or New Mexican religious folk art. AGE: 19th Century. CONDITION: Good ethnographic condition. As shown in the photos and with the following noted: Loss of the lower legs and feet of the larger carved figure. Wear and small losses to the painted surfaces, as shown. Darkening to the wood surfaces and a deep rich patina overall from smoke, dirt, handling and age. Overall, very good condition. The carved figures are glued to the base. They may have been added to the piece during the late 19th century, and so possibly the figures, although they also appear to b

Here for auction is a beautifull little Bolivian Amarya Chuspa measureing 9" wide and 7 1/2" tall. These are made for the workers in the high altatude to carry cocoa leaves which they chew(along with a piece of lime which privideds citric acid to break down the cocaine from the cocoa leaf) to give them extra stamana in the diffacult working conditions at eleven to twelve thousand foot altatude. This chuspa is special in that on the fron of the bag there are three small pouches created in the weave o f the bag itself used to carry wedges of lime. OLD MOLA FROM SAN BLAS ISLANDS PANAMA VERY FINE QUALITY W/INTRICATE STITCHING
Mola are the iconic craft of the San Blas Islands of the Caribbean coast of Panama. The are made by the Kuna Indian women who inhabit these islands as part of their traditional dress. An authentic mola takes two weeks to six months to make and starts its life as part of a paired set that make the front and back panel of a dress top. They originated in the 19th century as fabrics became more widely available from colonizers and they are inspired by the traditional body painting of the Kuna. Mola are constructed with a reverse applique technique and one of the criteria by which the quality and value of a mola is judged is how many cut-away layers were used in the construction. Other qualities to look for include: originally used as a dress. Not just made for tourists; fineness of stitches and evenness and width of cutouts; complexity of embroidery ... moreand stitched designs; and overall artistry of color and design. Sorry about the reflection/shadow in the pictures. The Mola is perfect. This Mola appears to have about a dozen layers judging from the multitude of colors. The stitches are very fine, virtually invisible. The original Mola were representative of the creativity and pride of workmanship of the women who made them and wore them proudly. You can tell by the very intricate design and multitude of colors as well as the fine quality of the workmanship. This piece was a labor of love. Measures 19 1/4" X 15" This piece was not made for tourists like most pieces you see. The original Mola do not have the large pieces of fabric, minimal colors(which means minimal layers of fabric for the reverse applique technique) and rough stitching. If you want it without the frame the shipping will be free.

Vintage Latin American Mexican Mayan Folk Art Clay Flute Pottery Figural
This vintage flute is made of dark clay. Unfinished on the back but glazed with red, green and gold paint on the front. It depicts a Mayan type man with fancy headdress and rings in his ears, sitting with his feet folded underneath him. The piece is quite sculptural and obviously hand-made. It's 8-1/2" tall and 4-1/2" across at the widest point. There's a mouthpiece(flat opening) at the very top, two holes on the back, and 6 smaller holes in the torso area. The flute makes a good sound, and condition is very good, with no chips or cracks. The glaze/paint is in very good condition. My guess is that a Mexican artist made and sold this as a souvenir, possibly in the 50's, but I have not way of documenting that other than borrowing information from similar pieces on e-Bay. Payment is requested within 3 days of auction end.

Antique Monkey Figure Coca Cocaine Ilucta Bico Gourd Poporo Ishcupuro 1940's
Antique Coca Gourd with Hand-Carved Monkey Figure on Steel Dipping Needle Top Origin: Peru Age: Early-Mid 20th Century/ Approximately 1940's Condition: Excellent- No Visible Flaws- See Photos Provenance: Ex. Buenos Aires. Argentina Private Collection About Traditional Coca Use: Traditionally. Coca leaves are prepared either to chew or as a tea(mate de coca) In Bolivia bags of coca leaves are sold in local markets and by street vendors. The activity of chewing coca is called mambear, chacchar or acullicar, borrowed from Quechua, coquear(northern Argentina) or in Bolivia, picchar, derived from the Aymara language. The Spanish masticar is also frequently used, along with the slang term"bolear, derived from the word"bola" or ball of coca pouched in the cheek while chewing. Typical coca consumption is about two ounces per day, ... moreand contemporary methods are believed to be unchanged from ancient times. Coca is kept in a woven pouch(chuspa or huallqui) A few leaves are chosen to form a quid(acullico) held between the mouth and gums. Doing so may cause a tingling and numbing sensation in their mouths. The formerly used dental anaesthetic Novocaine has a similar effect. Chewing coca leaves is most common in indigenous communities across the central Andean region, particularly in places like the highlands of Colombia, Bolivia and Peru, where the cultivation and consumption of coca is as much a part of the national culture similar to chicha, like wine is to France or beer is to Germany. It also serves as a powerful symbol of indigenous cultural and religious identity, amongst a diversity of indigenous nations throughout South America. Coca is still chewed in the traditional way. With a tiny quantity of ilucta(a preparation of the ashes of the quinoa plant) added to the coca leaves; it softens their astringent flavor and activates the alkaloids. Other names for this basifying substance are llipta in Peru and the Spanish word lejía, lye in English. The consumer carefully uses a wooden stick(formerly ofte

Antique Yanomami Amazonian Large Burden Basket~Painted Details~Mint
♥ ~Antique Yanomami Burden Basket~ ~Excellent Condition- Mint!~ This is an authentic burden basket. From the Yanomami tribe of the Amazon Rain Forest. This basket is very old. It has a lovely patina on it. It is a large bell shaped burden basket, the shape is gorgeous! The weave is very well done, it looks like rows and rows of dried maize. So pretty. The top edge has an ornate weave and braided edgework. There are 8 handles woven into the top edge, and 2 handles woven into the lower area of the basket. These handles support the straps. The straps are made of some sort of fiber or bark. The strap is woven through the handles. And then tied in a knot on the inside. The women of the tribe use the baskets to carry heavy loads of plants and other items, and use the strap across the forehead. With the basket against the back. This fabulous burden ... morebasket is decorated with a traditional geometric design. The design is like lightening bolt electricity. Amazing! The design has been painted on. And is a deep rich black color made of charcoal pigment. The inside of the basket has 6 bands to reinforce the shape. You can see all the craftsmanship when you look on the inside, like where all the fiber ends are tucked. This is a very fine example of Yanomami basketry. ~Condition~ This basket is in excellent condition. I would say it is very close to mint. It was very well cared for. Though I do not know the actual age. The weaving is very strong. With no holes, tears or damage. The strap is very supple and is complete. The strap has some slight aging. But was most likely in that shape when originally worked into a strap. The painted details are in great shape, the black color is deep and rich. The inside of the basket has some dust and dirt from age and use. There are some very tiny red paint marks on the top edge. This is a beautiful basket. One of the finest! Really a spectacular piece. Perfect for collections, display, study. Please Note* I am not an expert on basketry. I specialize in vintage clothing and lingerie. It is

Vintage Pair Signed Colonial Style Alpaca Nickel Silver Andes Inca KERO Aquilla
Rare pair of handmade. Hand hammered Colonial Style traditional Incan KEROs from an Andean country- Peru, Bolivia or Ecuador. Since ancient times, this form of vessel(also made in wood or pottery) is sometimes also called an aquilla, and was used specifically for drinking chicha, a fermented corn drink. They are very hard to find in metal. One of them is stamped with an unknown logo on its bottom, and the words HANDMADE. See photo. They do NOT pass the acid test for silver, so it is most likely Alpaca Silver aka Nickel Silver, a metal that is used a lot in Latin& South America that looks like silver but is not. These came from an estate of people who traveled to South America in the 1950's-60's. It was probably purchased from a store there, then and used. Considering its age, their condition is very good with only a few minor ... morenicks and dings(see photos) There are light stains to a few areas(see photos) I do not know if it will come out with polishing. Any questions, do ask. I spent a long time researching these. Domestic USPS mail in a box-$6.00 International USPS Registered First Class mail in a box- $19.00

Vtg Enrique ZAVALA Brass Bronze MINI FRAME MIRROR Mexican Folk Art Mexico Signed
Espejo Artesanio This is a wonderful little brass and tin mirror made by the Mexican artisan Enrique Zavala. The mirror is a 4 1/2" high bronze-toned brass oval with applied brass leaf decoration around the little oval mirror. I love the back; thick. Cushioned suede with a sewn-in loop for hanging. The frame is very well-constructed and is signed"Mexico Zavala" near the bottom. There is some spotting on the mirror and a nice patina to the brass. The Third Bank of the River and Other Stories REVIEW- Hard to find. And easily my most valued book acquisition in recent history. I was primarily interested in the title story of this collection.its small but packs a resounding punch.Im still working on the other stories, but fully expect to be floored. If you can't find it you could potentially borrow.though it may ... moreinvolve begging, pleading, and possible blood-letting on your part(be forwarned) Review By Sandra from GoodReads Dot Com Synopsis"Beginning shortly before the turn of the last century. There was a noticeable trend towards the ambiguous in modern Brazilian literature. Writers such as Machado de Assis and Jorge Amado have both explored the use of the unstated and the forced compromise between extremes that have grown to be so crucial to the modernist movement. No Brazilian author, however, has mastered the compromise quite like João Guimarães Rosa, a man who was once described as not only leading, but preceding the reader"to a place where there is discord and cacophony under which there is a strange harmony…the third bank of the river…the land every soul craves for. In his collection of short stories, Primeiras Estórias(1962) Rosa pays particularly close attention to ambiguity as a main theme in Brazilian backland writing. First translated to English in 1968 under the title First Stories, Primeiras Estórias, and in particular, The Third Bank of the River, is in many ways the defining work of the Brazilian short story. Mexican Jade Nephrite Idol Head Bat Headdress Drilled Pendant Aztec Mayan 2.5"
Gorgeous shade of green Mexican jade stone pendant. Bat's face is quite charming.Almost smiling. Hole is drilled on top of the bat's head. Measures 2.5" tall 2" wide. Slanty almond-shaped eyes, full lips, and elongated ear lobes on human face. I lived in Mexico for many years in the 1970s and collected Mexican folk art and pre-Columbian artifacts of all sorts. I do not recall where this piece is from. Looks too smooth to be hand carved, so it probably is not more than 50 years old. Would be great hanging around your neck as a talisman or power symbol piece of jewelry.
