Title, Yoruba Ere Ibeji Twin Figure. Nigeria, African, Type of Object, carving. Miniature, Country of Origin, Nigeria, People, Yoruba, Materials, Wood. ... morePigment, beads, aluminum, Approximate Age, Mid 20th century, Dimensions, 11 inches H. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, Worn patina, Additional Information: The helmet and skirt suggest that this is a colonial era piece. Among the Yoruba. Who have the highest rate of twins in the world, the arrival of twins is seen as both a blessing and an omen because of the high mortality rate. If a twin dies, an image dedicated to Ibeji, the deity of twins, is carved to serve as the earthly abode for the spirit of the deceased. AFRICAN DOLLS FOR PLAY AND MAGIC, by Dagan. Among the Yoruba, twins have special powers, much like the orisha. and are to be treated with respect throughout their lives. If a twin dies, the mother seeks a diviner's advice about which carver should make the ere ibeji to stand in for the dead child. Once the figure is carved, the artist activates it by soaking it in a special solution and rubbing it with specific oils. The mother treats the ere ibeji as if it were alive, feeding, dressing, and bathing the image. Its face is washed with soap or sugarcane fiber, then rubbed with a cloth and indigo or laundry bluing. After a period of time, the facial features may be rubbed away. Its colors are beautifully selected and wonderfully mellowed. It is visually hypnotic. Just great. Outstanding provenance. 22" x 16" Collection of Ann Parker and Avon Neal. Molas. Folk Art of the Cuna Indians. Is one of the most important mola books ever written. Ann Parker and Avon Neal were a couple who teamed together to write a number of books on folk art. They made numerous trips to the San Blas Islands, starting in 1965. Their focus was on"story telling" molas, with a particular emphasis on acculturated molas that found their inspiration in western culture- magazine ads, billboards and comic books. Museum Quality 1970s Kuna Mola - ex Parker Neal Collection - Angels & Cross
Museum Quality Mola- Angels Praying to"PAP DUMMAT" Cross- Collected by Ann Parker and Avon Neal. Parker and Neal are best known for having first thoroughly documented this kind of acculturated mola. It is a super example of how the Kuna's will seize imagery from other cultures and use it in their molas with adding their own cultural touches. The two angels are clearly Christian in origin. While the cross could be Christian or Kuna- both cultures used it- but is likely Christian. But the cross is labeled with clearly-Kuna wording"PAP TUMMAT" translates to"Big Father" or"God" or, may favorite, Big Daddy. It is the Kuna way of saying"God. IKAR NUEDI" translates as"beautiful way. Cool combination of cultures! Sorry, I've been reading too much James Ellroy lately. Very well cut and ... moresewn- about as good as it gets. Another true masterpiece. Outstanding provenance. 18" x 13.5" Collection of Ann Parker and Avon Neal. Molas. Folk Art of the Cuna Indians. Is one of the most important mola books ever written. Museum Quality 1970s Kuna Mola - ex Parker Neal Collection - Lusitania
Museum Quality Mola- Sailboat Lusitania- Collected by Ann Parker and Avon Neal. An excellent early-1970s mola. It depicts a finely rendered sailboat being manned by three men, one of whom seems to be wearing his white underwear on the foredeck. Remarkable embroidery details- see the line holding the tiller to the boom of the mainsail and the ship's name- LUSITANIA. Beautiful, charming, folky and really, really well sewn. A true masterpiece. Antique Jaguar Mask Guatemalan South American Wall Hanging Wood Carving Folk Art
Amazing wood carving in the form of a jaguar's head. Jaguar with open mouth showing bloody teeth. Hand painted in great detail. I believe this is carved from a lightweight wood. The head measures 8 1/4 inches from front to back. 6 1/2 inches from side to side, and is about 6 1/2 inches tall. Measurements were taken with head sitting flat on surface. The opening in the back doesn't seem large enough for the mask to be worn. I do not know the origin nor the age of the mask. More pictures available upon request. It's in great vintage condition.

Antique Guatemalan Sash Beautiful Natural Dyes Extreme Tight Fine Weave
This auction is for an antique Guatemalan tribal sash. I have had it since the late 1960's and it was an antique then. All natural dyes from cochinea and indigo. Extremely fine weave from a backstrap loom. It almost feels like silk. But is cotton. The embroidery has some bright yellow and I am unfamiliar with its source. But seems to b woven in at the edges. The overall sash is in excellent condition for its age; the embroidery has a few loose strings. But nothing distracting. Size: 117" long plus about 10" fringe and about 4.5" wide Please email me if you need more photos.

Rare Carved Brazil Nut Fruit Capsule - Quirky - Treen
A very quirky object indeed! A carved brazil nut tree fruit. Containing brazil nuts. 8cm tall. The upper half has been carved and polished, with four slits having been made to reveal the nuts that we are familiar with inside. The lower part has been left in it's original state. How to classify this? I don't know. Treen? Tribal art? or just a great unusual item. A conversation piece, all three at a guess. If you look on wikipedia for brazil nut there is one pictured. I believe this one to have some age. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Over the next couple of weeks I will be posting a few other interesting bits& pieces- might be worth a look. I have quoted for first class postage. But I am always happy to explore cheaper alternatives. Including collection- I hate our postal charges!

Racy 1960s Kuna Mola, ex Kit Kapp Collection, Mating Birds
Sikwi Makket(Mating Birds) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. Really a pretty great mola- note the very wide channel around the mating birds and the solo bird at the top(normally such wide channel-outlining is only found in pre-World War II molas) This one is probably from the 1950s or early 1960s. It shows a subject that the Kuna are quite sensitive about- mating- so the artist simple shows the act as one giant bird with two heads and two sets of legs. The liberal uses of old printed fabrics as inserts is a nice touch- as is the spectacular sunburst embroidered eyes on each bird. A rare and collectible piece. There's one area where the base layer wore through. But someone has pulled the hole out of site so it's not noticeable from the front. Cool Folksy 1960s Kuna Mola, ex Kit Kapp Collection, Jungle Animals
Molia Paibaka(Nine Jungle Animals) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. The renderings of the animals on this mola are really quite cool. Probably agoutis or squirrels. They have feathered tails and wild undulating stripes on their sides. Not a common design. From one of the great early mola collections. 17" x 14.5" The Kit Kapp Collection. 1960s Kuna Mola, ex Kit Kapp Collection, Hammock Hooks
Kachi-Akke(Hammock Hooks) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. A simple. Beautiful two-layer mola with electric vibrating color combination of green and red. It's an abstract hook, or akke design. Very Rare 1960s Kuna Mola, ex Kit Kapp Collection, Water Buckets
Ti-Pormegana(buckets used for carrying water from mainland rivers daily) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. This is the first example of a mola with this design that I have ever seen. It depicts eight decorated buckets. Probably made from calabash gourds(but rather too square for that? It is quite large, plus quite"wide" in format- sometimes a sign of an early piece, but this one is almost certainly mid 1960s. Quite good condition and quite rare. Great Kuna Mola - ex Parker Neal Collection - Galu Spirit Place Dwelling
Galu(Spirit Place Dwelling) Mola- Collected by Ann Parker and Avon Neal. This remarkably well executed mola is an example of the high levels of craftsmanship that Kuna women achieved in the 1960s and early 1970s. It is a Galu mola. Which depicts the area in the fourth level of the underworld where the spirits of birds reside. The embroidery is great, as is the uniformity in the cutting and stitching of the reverse applique. Great craftsmanship and condition. Outstanding provenance. 17" x 13" Collection of Ann Parker and Avon Neal. Molas. Folk Art of the Cuna Indians. Is one of the most important mola books ever written. Intricate Kuna Mola - ex Parker Neal Collection - Anthro Butterfly
Sucha(Butterfly) Mola- Collected by Ann Parker and Avon Neal. Here we have what appears to be a large butterfly with a very human head and set of legs. The sewing and cutting is very intricate and complex- note the X-motifs embroidered on the butterfly's hat. The butterfly is surrounded by colorful. Well-executed flowers. Charming Kuna Mola - ex Parker Neal Collection - Devil or Sianala man
Quirky Kuna Mola Featuring Devil or Sianala Man- Collected by Ann Parker and Avon Neal. This mola features an odd little guy with gigantic buck teeth. When I first saw it I presumed the guy was a Nia. Or devil. But the outstretched arms seem to be holding abstract sianalas(the clay sensor pots the Kunas use for incense burning) The design can also be"read" upside down, where the Nia/Man's head suddenly has a huge smile with no buck teeth and he's earing some kind of a huge hat(kurgin) with a cross on it. I'll let the winning bidder decide the outcome. Outstanding provenance. 16" x 13" Collection of Ann Parker and Avon Neal. Molas. Folk Art of the Cuna Indians. Antique Spanish Colonial Retablo San Jose 18 century
A retablo or lamina is a Latin American devotional painting. Especially a small popular or folk art one using iconography derived from traditional Catholic church art. Retablos are important to Mexican folk religion because they are a physical representation of holy images such as Christ. The Virgin Mother, or one of the many thousands of saints. They come from the need humans have to interact on a personal level with divine spirits. Retablos are evidentiary support for communication between the divine and humans. San Jose oil on metal.1875. 13"H, 8 3/4"W From the collection of an old collector. With notarized letter from when was acquired.

Antique Mexican Carved Wood Retablo / Latin American-Spanish Colonial/ Gold Leaf
Antique Mexican Carved and Painted Wood Retablo ~ 19th or Early 20th Century ~ Possibly Saint Francis ~ please scroll down for more photos and information ~ SIZE: Height-15.75" 40 cm) Width- 11.5" 29.2 cm) Depth- 1.8" 4.6 cm) DESCRIPTION: Fine old Mexican or Latin American carved. Gessoed, painted and gilded wood retablo in the form of a three dimensional sculptural carved plaque. This piece dates from the 19th or very early 20th century. Is in the 17th- 18th century Spanish Colonial style, and may be a depiction of Saint Francis. The Saint is holding a book and looking upward and a silver halo surrounds his head. The retablo is carved from a single piece of wood(several pieces joined together and then carved from the one block) and has great detail and beauty. The flat background is a fantastic sea and mountain landscape painting ... moremade by inscribing into the paint allowing the silver leaf behind to show through. The Saint is fully carved and detailed with gesso over the wood. Which has then been painted and covered with gold leaf and silver leaf, in the classical Spanish style. The life-like details are amazing and the decoration is ornate. This piece is painted blue on the reverse and outer edges of the raised integrated frame. On the outer side of left edge is a stamped mark in Spanish. Which is a bit hard to read, but looks to be the mark of a guild or Art- artisan's school. Some of the finest retablos and church altars come from these type of artisan's institutes in Latin and SouthAmerican and this is certainly a very fine example of craftsmanship and religious art. AGE: Late 19th or very early 20th century. CONDITION: Good condition. As shown in the photos and with the following noted: Old worn darkened patina. Wear to the back and edges of the wood and painted surfaces.Small chips and crazing to the painted gesso surfaces. No major breaks, cracks, or damage. No restorations. ~ please click on image for high definition photos ~ This piece will be a museum quality addition to any collec

The drink Mate is also known ... moreas chimarrao or cimarron. Which is a traditional South American infused drink, particularly in Uruguay, Agentina, Paraguay, south states of Brazil, south of Chile. It is prepared by steeping died leaves of yerba mate in hot water. The bombilla most likely had a leather tip to suck up the mate and act as a filter, unless in this example the bombilla was inverted so that the knop became the filter. This mate cup and bombilla are most likely Argentinian from around 1900. One of two examples I am selling so do check out my shop. If you require further images to examine at high resolution please message me with your email address. The condition is good with overall rubbing/handling to cup with one leg slightly bent. The bombilla knop is un-even and the leather filter probably missing. The cup is 14cm high(approx 5½" Weight 203 grams. The bombilla is 19cm long(approx 7½" Weight 53 grams. Old Knitted Figural Textile over Wood Central South American Shaman's Stick Wand
This amazing Shamans Wand measures about 15" long. I do think it is from Central or South America. But truthfully we are unable to identify exactly where this item originates from. The item consists of a stick wrapped in yarn or thick thread. At the top of which is a figure made from the thread and mounted on the stick. The figure has dangles of thread hanging off of it with feathers or worn tiny pieces of feather hanging mounted from it. The piece has real age and is deteriorated some with the feathers barely clinging on. All is pictured. That being said it is a very cool and unusual object of Tribal Art.
