This writing table is smaller in size measuring 10" x 7" x 4.25. The outside is mahogany veneer with two diamond inlays in the center of the lid. There are two spaces for ink bottles and a central storage area for smaller writing utensils such as crayons or chalk. The pink felt covering the writing surface is worn as it has seen a lot of use in the past. The clasp to keep the writing surface closed is missing. And there are small scratches and cracks in the veneer. The wood around the keyhole appears to be broken(see photos) and there is no key. I wish I could take pictures that do a little bit better job of showing the color and minute detail in the inlay work performed on this piece. So. Try to use your imagination. The table is nicer then the pictures reflect. To be sure as to rather or not this piece is from France or American made I cant be positive. However, I have been told it is French and over 100 years old. For sure this is the best inlay work I can remember seeing including the mother of pearl laid in place throughout the piece. Antique White Oak Library Table Writing Desk Golden Oak Quarter-Sawn Quarter-Cut
LOCAL PICK-UP ONLY* Up for sale is this beautiful old library table or writing desk made out of quarter-sawn. Or quarter-cut white oak. The wood is cut in such a way to reveal the large flaking pattern found in white oak(Quercus alba) that has been quarter sawn. Once stained, the wood has a rich golden color as seen in the photos. The table measures about 26 inches wide, 42 inches long, and stands about 30 inches tall. There is a drawer on one side and a shelf across the bottom. There is a burn mark along the edge as shown in the 5th photo, but otherwise the table is in good condition for its age. The inside of the drawer seems to have been replaced with some plywood at some point in time. The drawer doesn't slide smoothly, but may be an easy fix.
