The original glossy finish has been revarnished over the years and is very well preserved with enough wear for warm antique patina. There are stains. Mars at the edges, shrinkage separations from age and ink stains for character. Waxed and polished, only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain its luster. The drop front key is a handle only, the lock does not work. Inside are cubicles and small drawers. A separate piece for easier moving. The bookcase has a working lock. The chest itself is 10.5" the carved paw feet are 16" The surface pull is brass as are the ornaments on both sides of the top. The interior itself id painted red with slots and drawers on both sides. This amazing one of a kind late 18th century secretary cabinet has many stunning features. The height at over six feet. The incredibly detailed and designed parquetry and marquetry with the period burled and figured and straight walnut, the original hardware to include the locksets and a key which fits the top cabinet door, the locking mechanism for the bottom right small drawer which is brilliant, the serpentine drawers.especially the long and thin side drawers, the original dark blue velvet on the desk top surface when opened, the somewhat squaring of the top with what appears as faux bamboo around the top edge and just the attention to detail. Look at the photos.you will ... moresee. The hand constructed details are super interesting with the contrasting inlays. The German. Belgian, Dutch and Austrian cabinetmakers of the time were known for their superior craftsmanship. The original period finish is what has even turned into more conrasts as the patina has mellowed on the entire piece. Open the locking cabinet door and find an open space with the locking mechanism for the lowes small right hand drawer. And, by the way, all of the drawers are marked as to where they belong. This lower drawer will stay locked until the small mechanism is pressed to release the drawer to open. All of the drawers are covered in a really cool paper which has obviously been there for over 100 years and maybe longer. It has a very silvery look to it. Not sure if the secondarywood but all of the surfaces are hand planed and the bottom of the large drawer is one wide board.hand planed. Of course. Drawers and case pieces are all hand dovetailed. This is an Eastlake secretary from the late 1800s. I think. It's solid wood construction, mostly mahogany with walnut burl panels, very tasteful Eastlake geometric details, original wavy glass and beautiful original patina. Three adjustable shelves in the top book case; drop-down writing surface with original felt, two drawers, file bins and pigeon holes; one fixed self in the base. The two locks work with a replacement key, but they are a little sticky, and one of the rosettes that covers the writing panel pivot is missing. Measures: 42 x 85 x 11.5 top, 20 base. This item is in the Eastlake style which is most easily identified by the round dovetails utilized on the drawers. Featuring the original finish, this piece had burl walnut posts on top of the exceedingly high bookcase and burl walnut panels in the base. The base has a large circular dovetail drawer and two burl walnut faced cabinet doors and an applied molded baseboard that supports the attractive cylinder desk and spindle gallery topped double door bookcase. Open the burl walnut panel cylinder to expose a burl walnut double drawer cubbyhole gallery. There is an old-time ink stain in the back. Which adds charm and character. The writing surface pulls out, ... moreand we have re-felted it in period looking green as the original was far too worn to be functional. On top of the cylinder roll, you'll see the two original wavy bubble glass doors that hold four adjustable shelves, and offers tons of storage. The shelves are fully adjustable for whatever you particular needs dictate. The bookcase doors are an impressive 43 inches tall and is topped by a multi-spindle raised panel incise carved back splash, which is often missing from desks like these. This desk is in good condition. Showing minor little nicks and dings typical of an original piece dating just post civil war era. There is a small aggravation on the left hand burl walnut post where the burl has lifted a little bit, but this is normal and is not a big deal. There is also a hair line crack on the bottom of the right hand door, which we would not restore, as it doesn't affect the piece. None of these issues are a big deal, but we mention them for full disclosure. The piece comes with one key, which is for the center drawer. Very nicely made. Unusually small size walnut bookcase top section, originally from a secretary desk. It could be used as a hanging cupboard. Measures 31 1/4" wide(without moldings) 11 1/4" deep and 37" high. Case is quite sound. Original back. Shelves and door lock(with key) Available for pickup at my shop in Carlisle PA. Or I can deliver this table to you at no charge if it's not too far.
