Description: This listing is for a ... moreChippendale Period Slant Front Desk circa 1770-80. Salem Massachusetts, in the manner of John Chipman(b. 1746-1819) It features solid Cuban Mahogany case, each side crafted of a single solid plank, through-dovetailed at the top and dovetailed at the bottom. The slant front lid features an original keyhole escutcheon over what appears to be the original brass lock, falling onto arms that slide out with brass knobs- one original, the left one replaced. The open writing surface is clean, with what appear to be two original brass hinges, though curious patching is noted below flaking each hinge. Above the writing surface is a collection of nine small drawers, the centermost shell carved, each with brass knobs, below which a gallery of six pigeon holes rest in perfect symmetry. The case has four graduated drawers. Each of which feature period bail pull brass hardware flanking a replaced lock with original brass keyhole escutcheon. The drawers are hand dovetailed front and back, the front dovetails hidden behind applied cockbead molding. The drawers are yellow pine secondaries, the bottom being deeply chamfered along the perimeter to rabbet into the frame. They slide easily in and out of the case over replaced drawer runners, the drawer dividers running into the sides behind a mahogany facade, effectively hiding what are probably dovetail joints. The back of the case has all original backboards, though many nails are replaced. The molded apron features a carved shell drop down medallion in the center that mirrors the design of the middle drawer. The case rests over scroll cut bracket feet, each with an incredible flowing design in the manner of John Chipman. We do not believe the desk was executed in the shop of John Chipman. As his cases will typically feature exposed dovetail drawer dividers in the Newport manner, and the pidgeon-hole gallery will regularly featur

This is a beautiful Chinese carved wood slant front writing desk with matching chair. We do not know how old it is. Nor who made it; there is one very much like it-same size, shape, hardware, little more carving-listed on Ebay, but I don't believe this one was made in the 1800's. It is very solid and very, very heavy. The Chair has a cushion on it and is also very solid and very heavy. The carving is on the front and both sides of the desk, and on the chair, as seen in the photos. All the feet on both chair and desk are carved at the bottom. Below the writing area, there are two pullout drawers. The desk measures about 42 inches high, 38 inches wide, and 16 inches deep. As with the other writing desk we listed. This is a pick up item. Here is a fantastic original Georgian circa late 1700's English solid oak desk with gorgeous figured mahogany. The mahogany would have probably been added at a later date such as the early 1800's when figured mahogany veneer became more popular and more readily available. The pigeon hole interior has a unique look and design with lots of extra added details as well as a well interior below the writing surface which simply slides open. The interior is solid oak.some beautiful quartersawn and this slant front will lock with a replaced lock and key. Hinges are heavy iron and original. The top drawer is a false drawer and then the 2 over 3 drawers are all graduated. All of the drawers inside and out are hand dovetailed as shown. Exquisite antique continental slant or fall front desk. Made with intricate inlaid marquetry featuring striking burl fruitwoods. This small decorative piece was likely intended as a ladies' writing desk. The fall front opens to reveal a writing surface as well as two cubbies, two drawers and a tiny cabinet with door. There are two drawers below the writing surface, each with consecutive concave sections, scrollwork inlay and ornate meta pulls. The bottom portion features a carved skirt and graceful cabriole legs ending in trifid feet. Overall the desk is in good antique condition. With some wear and minor crackling to the surfaces. The two front legs are ball and claw style- both have some of the finish chipped off of them. Overall, the desk is heavy duty and in sturdy condition with minor wear and tear. C. 1770-90 Item# 120411EIU26 This very fine piece almost certainly originates from the Salem or Boston work centers in Massachusetts during the last quarter of the 18th Century. Circa 1770-90. The dense and beautifully grained solid mahogany used in the desk was clearly selected with great care, the smooth and undulating lines of the boards understated and subtle, flowing from one drawer to the next and ultimately into the slanting desk surface. This is constructed with a solid horizontal plank flanked by vertical strips affixed with glued groove and tenons, lifting smoothly over replaced brass hinges and resting on the projecting ... morelopers with original brass knobs to reveal a large writing surface and gallery of nine small drawers and four scalloped cubby holes. The drawers are each inscribed for where each belongs in the scheme of the desk, in pencil 1-9, and each is hand dovetailed with chamfered bottoms rabbeting into the drawer frame. The center drawer features a wonderful sunk 18-lobed shell carved design flowing into the two drawers below it, a design common to these work centers, each drawer face carved out of a solid piece of mahogany. The case is crafted of solid single boards of mahogany along each side. Dovetailed into the parallel-grained pine case bottom and through-dovetailed at the top. The back is constructed of three large pine boards, behind which a pine bar perpendicular to the boards to support the top to the bottom, dovetailed at both ends with a screw through the bottom. Carved solid molding runs along the bottom of the case with an applied scalloped skirt pendant at the center, reinforced from the back with rounded glued blocking. Each drawer is graduated. This desk was made by a master craftsman from early boards and solid tiger maple boards, to look exactly like an original period American Chippendale desk from 1775. Measures 36 inches wide by 41 inches high and 18 inches deep. There are four graduated bottom drawers and a full interior with three secret compartments. Here we offer a beautiful turn 19th/ 20th Century Queen Anne. Ball and Claw Slant Front Desk. Sea Shell cartouche motifs. Not your average, run of the mill desk. This baby has crisp carvings and intricate construction. It stands on four high beautifully curved and carved legs, ending in ball and claw foot. Front lid carved to the max opens up and sets on the support slides that pull out on ends. Judging by the lack of the pull handles on the slides, and by the bronze hardware mechanism, I believe the slides to have been mechanical. Desk interior features four drawers, four upright drawers and another four cubbyhole compartments. Outside there is one wide center drawer, with two additional ones. It is in good. It does have several light scratches on the top and sides, most of which can be addressed by a quality polishing compound or scratch cover. There are 4 serpentine drawers. Original drawer pulls, ball and claw feet. Missing the key as well as 1 small knob on the inside compartment. A paper label on the back indicates the piece was made by the Northwestern Cabinet Co. of Burlington, Iowa. This company was in business between 1866-1971. American Chippendale Walnut Antique Slant Front Desk, Pennsylvania c. 1790-1815
AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE WALNUT SLANT FRONT ANTIQUE DESK. PENNSYLVANIA Probably Delaware River Valley. Circa 1790-1815 Item# 1407JXE27P This is an outstanding example of late Chippendale from the Delaware River Valley region of Pennsylvania. The craftsman executing this work selected the walnut planks with great care. Utilizing a positively chaotic grain flow for the drawers and prospect door with a more symmetrical grain for the lid and sides of the case. Lifting over period brass hinges(possibly original) to rest firmly on projecting lopers reveals a rectangular prospect door flanked by document drawers and two-over-one drawers beneath four pigeon-hole letter slots. The document drawer sides are covered with period inscriptions. Much of it being accounting but also with a note in the same hand and pigment reading"August 4 1812" and ... morea somewhat illegible signature of"Ger Ryall Jr. The facade of the desk is composed of four graduated drawers with molded lipping and period brasses in the original holes(probably replacements) The drawers are constructed in the typical manner for this region. The frame of poplar with dovetails of the sides contained within the dovetails of the front and back, the bottom boards half-lapped and deeply chamfered along the edges to set in grooves along the sides and front with triangular glue blocks along the chamfered edges for permanence. The back edge is tacked with square forged iron nails. The interior of the case features three-quarter depth dust boards of yellow pine. These joined together with tongue-in-groove joinery that has long since separated and left gaps between sections. The underside of the desk is clean and solidly constructed with a large rectangular block inside each foot- the underside is apparently untouched and retains an illegibly signature in large strokes. The"B" J" or"R" that is so boldly represented on the underside is also found on the bottom of several drawers and both document drawers. The back of the desk is untouched ot
