We’re pleased to offer this lovely acanthus carved bow-front flame mahogany slant-top period desk with claw feet and Corinthian pillars. That dates from the 1870s-90s. It has been refinished in a medium to satin sheen gloss dark reddish-brown mahogany stain. This desk has hand-cut dovetails across the top, like the early construction desks do, a breadboard writing surface that opens up to reveal two slide supports and a gorgeous interior with curved dovetail drawers, a raised beveled center door and center column drawers. It even has a key. The base has curved front drawers with wooden knobs, all dovetail, and the pillar drawers across the top, which means there are two smaller drawers across the base and three drawers in the bottom. There are also heavy-duty detailed claw feet. The overall size is 36 inches wide, 21 inches at the deepest point, and 42 inches high. The writing lid is 31 inches from the floor when opened, and the lid itself is 34 inches wide and 15 inches deep. The overall physical condition is NEAR MINT 98% PRESERVED CONDITION! the only flaws are minor veneer chips on the base from a stool/chair, and 2 spots of veneer loss on the lid, and veneer split due to wood shrinkage on the lid. Description: This listing is for a ... moreChippendale Period Slant Front Desk circa 1770-80. Salem Massachusetts, in the manner of John Chipman(b. 1746-1819) It features solid Cuban Mahogany case, each side crafted of a single solid plank, through-dovetailed at the top and dovetailed at the bottom. The slant front lid features an original keyhole escutcheon over what appears to be the original brass lock, falling onto arms that slide out with brass knobs- one original, the left one replaced. The open writing surface is clean, with what appear to be two original brass hinges, though curious patching is noted below flaking each hinge. Above the writing surface is a collection of nine small drawers, the centermost shell carved, each with brass knobs, below which a gallery of six pigeon holes rest in perfect symmetry. The case has four graduated drawers. Each of which feature period bail pull brass hardware flanking a replaced lock with original brass keyhole escutcheon. The drawers are hand dovetailed front and back, the front dovetails hidden behind applied cockbead molding. The drawers are yellow pine secondaries, the bottom being deeply chamfered along the perimeter to rabbet into the frame. They slide easily in and out of the case over replaced drawer runners, the drawer dividers running into the sides behind a mahogany facade, effectively hiding what are probably dovetail joints. The back of the case has all original backboards, though many nails are replaced. The molded apron features a carved shell drop down medallion in the center that mirrors the design of the middle drawer. The case rests over scroll cut bracket feet, each with an incredible flowing design in the manner of John Chipman. We do not believe the desk was executed in the shop of John Chipman. Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. The desk is a reproduction made by the Maddox Table Co. of Jamestown, New York. This desk comes right out of the New England estate. The desk has those wonderful features most folks are looking for, such as all-wood drawers with dovetail corners, and clawed feet. The hardware and locks are the originals that came with the desk, not replacements. The desk was in my family for around 60 or so years, so the desk dates to at least 1950, and it may be older than that- I'm just not sure. The desk is the slant-front style, hinged at the bottom, so it opens up and the front lays flat to become the writing surface; the desk front can be locked. When the desk front is opened and lowered into the writing position, two arms come out automatically to support the writing surface. Inside the desk there are 3 small drawers, and holders for stashing letters and so forth. In the center of the opened desk, inside, there is a closed compartment with no lock; the compartment door is scratched. There are 3 drawers below the writing surface that extend almost the full width of the desk, and each one of them can be locked. These drawers have a graceful bow front(see photos) Above the desk itself is a prominent feature, a bookcase with 2 shelves covered by hinged glass doors that swing out and can be locked. The bookcase doors do not line up 100% vertically when closed, a common problem with these desks. This doesn't mean that you can't close them or lock them when closed, but it is something I should point out. Above the bookcase is decorative trim with a twin swan&#

C. 1770-90 Item# 120411EIU26 This very fine piece almost certainly originates from the Salem or Boston work centers in Massachusetts during the last quarter of the 18th Century. Circa 1770-90. The dense and beautifully grained solid mahogany used in the desk was clearly selected with great care, the smooth and undulating lines of the boards understated and subtle, flowing from one drawer to the next and ultimately into the slanting desk surface. This is constructed with a solid horizontal plank flanked by vertical strips affixed with glued groove and tenons, lifting smoothly over replaced brass hinges and resting on the projecting ... morelopers with original brass knobs to reveal a large writing surface and gallery of nine small drawers and four scalloped cubby holes. The drawers are each inscribed for where each belongs in the scheme of the desk, in pencil 1-9, and each is hand dovetailed with chamfered bottoms rabbeting into the drawer frame. The center drawer features a wonderful sunk 18-lobed shell carved design flowing into the two drawers below it, a design common to these work centers, each drawer face carved out of a solid piece of mahogany. The case is crafted of solid single boards of mahogany along each side. Dovetailed into the parallel-grained pine case bottom and through-dovetailed at the top. The back is constructed of three large pine boards, behind which a pine bar perpendicular to the boards to support the top to the bottom, dovetailed at both ends with a screw through the bottom. Carved solid molding runs along the bottom of the case with an applied scalloped skirt pendant at the center, reinforced from the back with rounded glued blocking. Each drawer is graduated. For sale is a great late 19th century formal mahogany Hepplewhite slant lid lap desk. The lap desk is an overall good condition with some areas of repair as noted in the pictures. This lap desk has several areas of hidden compartments and we've taken pictures of those areas before your consideration. The grain of the mahogany is a very nice with lots of green shelling in a medium brown wooden tone. There are two holding handles on each side of this piece. We are unsure if they are original to this lap desk. The escutcheons looked to be all original with original natural material. Although I don't know a whole lot about this. I can tell you I purchased it at a local estate auction. The auction contained many home library type items, such as books and pen sets and chairs and shelving from a very distinguished home library. This is a lovely old slant top lap desk. It may be handmade, it is in very sturdy condition. The top has an old scenic picture on it. The inside has little compartments for organizing paper clips or stamps etc. It is 9 1/4 x 12 1/4 and just over 2" high at the one end and almost 3 1/2 high at the top of the slant. There are two black velvet compartment covers the velvet is framed with veneer, there are two open compartments in the front of the box, the most interesting part of this item is that when you lift up the velvet covered lower compartment there are signatures and lettering some very faint and some quite clear, the handwriting on some is very ornate and old looking, a lot of the signatures have the last name Jacobson, I see some numbers also which could be dates.faint and difficult to read, it looks like a family signed this wood back generations ago. With bracket base and solid bat wing brass hardware, bench made during late 19th century. This desk was made by a master craftsman from early boards and solid tiger maple boards, to look exactly like an original period American Chippendale desk from 1775. Measures 36 inches wide by 41 inches high and 18 inches deep. There are four graduated bottom drawers and a full interior with three secret compartments. A rich. Reddish-brown mahogany, late 1930s Governor Winthrop, slant front style desk with oxbow(reverse serpentine) front and ball and claw feet. This model has breadboard ends on the writing surface and it comes with a key. The hardware is 90% intact on the desk, but the keyhole frame on the inner door and the knob on the right slider/writing surface support are missing. It features a writing surface that opens, pulls down, and rests on supports that are pulled out manually to keep the writing lid sturdy. When the lid is pulled down, it exposes a multi-cubby hole interior with a fan-carved door, two cleverly disguised, hidden behind multi-turn spindle post, narrow drawers, multiple bottom drawers, slats for letters and envelopes, and an oversized writing surface. The base has four dovetail, oxbow(reverse serpentine) drawer fronts that retain ... moreand sport the original Chippendale-style hardware, and it terminates with claw over ball feet. Antique Oak Slant Top Desk Drafting Railroad Student Work Industrial Table
For sale is a very nice oak desk with slant top and two drawers. It is 5 feet long and is probably early 1900s. These desks are hard to come by. About 2 feet deep. 3 feet 5 inches at the highest point. The legs are bolted on and so can be removed relatively easily. There are a couple of cracks in the legs- one repaired and the other does not need repair. I am not sure of the original intended purpose of this desk. Some describe it as a railroad desk. Also school or teachers desk. Drafting desk. It is great looking. Though. There are two holes in the top for some sort of cylinders, maybe pens or drafting tools. Here we offer a beautiful turn 19th/ 20th Century Queen Anne. Ball and Claw Slant Front Desk. Sea Shell cartouche motifs. Not your average, run of the mill desk. This baby has crisp carvings and intricate construction. It stands on four high beautifully curved and carved legs, ending in ball and claw foot. Front lid carved to the max opens up and sets on the support slides that pull out on ends. Judging by the lack of the pull handles on the slides, and by the bronze hardware mechanism, I believe the slides to have been mechanical. The front drawer is arched/bowed and has brass swing drawer pulls. The ornately carved apron has scroll features. The straight column legs are vertically reeded/incised. With round feed. Eastern Massachusetts or Southern New Hampshire white birch. Slant front desk with reverse serpentine front and top bombe drawer. Circa 1770-1790's. In excellent condition; all drawers open and close with ease. Original ball and claw feet. The pulls are very old replacements. It measures 43 1/2" high by 44" wide and 22" deep. There are some old stress cracks in the top on both sides.see photo 11) The interior has 9 drawers and 5 cubby holes. EBAY limits the photos to 12. If more are needed. Please let me know. On Stand Great Piece For Restoration Please be patient there are 32 photos to be loaded in this auction. In this auction. We have a wonderful antique, Victorian era slant top lap ... moredesk which is on a stand. Inside of the desk is a panel that conceals two secret drawers for security while travelling. You never know when your stagecoach is going to be set upon by brigands or highwaymen! The wooden box, we think it is walnut, features brass hardware, as you can see in the photos, the lock, the inset on the cover, and straps around the corners, etc. The box measures approx. 13 ⅝" by 8 ¾" by 5 ¾" standing approx. 19 ¼" tall with the stand. When you open the desk. You can see the desk top panels are covered in a textured black paper with gold gilt trim. The finish of the wood has a wonderful glow to it, along with signs of age and use, such as surface scratches and little nicks, as well as mystery stains. We found an old hand written name on one of the wood pieces- T W Cox. We took photos of it, so that you can see for yourself. We believe that the stand is a later addition to the piece; the wood is not quite a match. Antique Nautical Sailor Slant Top Desk.Folk Art Painted,Ship Thermopylae 1874. The only one! A nother one of our great finds! One of many items we have collected from old fishing vessels. Ships, yachts and homes along the Maine coast. Launched 1868. Scuttled 1907. She was a very fast ship with a rich history. The desk wood and hardware are of the period. The paint is very old. The key is missing. There is a saw cut in the back coaming and the paint has peeled in several places. Some of the bare spots have been repainted with beige paint. There is a chip in the top near the hinge that was there originally and was painted over. The inside and bottom side had an oily grime and has been wiped off but still has an oily film. It is what it is and we are fortunate that it has survived for 140 years. I do not have any history on the desk. Here is a tall slant desk. Old paint, and likely used in a commercial setting as it's 5' long. Simple construction of pine, nails, and screws. It's sturdy and not fancy; a hasp for security, no trim, no compartments, just a simple desk requiring a tall stool. The paint is scraped nicked, chipped, generally well used over many decades.
