So there are stress fractures all shown in the photos. This French foot chest is also very practical for daily use being 43 1/4" high and 40" wide by 20" deep. The brass escutcheons, while quite attractive, no longer house functioning locks. Each side has developed a separation in the mahogany as part of the wood's natural aging process; these age separations are purely cosmetic and don't affect the structural integrity of the piece. During a past restoration, a line of black stain was applied to these separations to complement the actual dark inlay around the bottom. The fall has also become uneven over the years and has sustained some wear to the corners but remains, like the rest of this piece, very sturdy. Finally there are a number of minor wear marks and the back feet were also replaced during the restoration. Overall this antique bureau remains in very good condition and would make a fine addition to any home or office furniture collection! Antique Late 19th Century Walnut Secretary Desk Original Hardware England
This antique secretary in solid walnut and burled walnut veneers came to us from England c1880. It is in beautiful condition and boasts three adjustable shelves(spaced at 2 ½” apart) in the upper unit along with the original glass front doors. There is a key for the upper cabinet and it works in the lock. But the locking mechanism does not work(missing the catch) There are some surface scratches to the bottom of the upper cabinet and also to the writing surface. Solid brass teardrop knobs complete the drawers which vary in depth(top at 4 ¾” middle at 6 ½” and the bottom drawer at 8 ½” Drawer fronts are a burled walnut veneer in excellent condition. Overall height is 85 ½” and the bottom section is 36”w x 19 ¾”d with the pull down substantial writing surface at 35 ½”w x 23”d(there are narrow panels on either ... moreside of the lower unit that pull out and support the writing surface) There seems to be some very slight delamination of the burled walnut veneer on the pull down panel– this is not noticeable unless scrutinized up close and should probably be left as is(refer to photos) as it does not affect the integrity of the piece. There are some slots for mail and smaller drawers as well that have the original brass knobs. The upper section is 34 12”w x 9 ¾”d. It comes apart in two pieces for ease of transport. The large Secretary Desk Bookcase has a half round mirror on the left top side over the desk area and the right top side has a double brass finial and rod gallery over the bookcase area. This auction features a stunning Eastlake style secretary desk. This unique piece stands 68 inches tall at the center and is 30 inches wide and 18 inches in depth. This is a two-piece secretary which makes moving it a whole lot easier. What caught my eye on this piece was it was a davenport desk. But instead of the typical slant front, this one has a secretary section on top. This is not a married piece, these two started life together, guaranteed. The top has nice intricate Eastlake type of carvings and half pinwheels surround the gallery. The desk top or writing surface drop downs to reveal a nice writing desk. Complete with great little cubbyholes and two drawers. There are no drawers missing, and all the hardware on this piece is original. We have the original key and it is included. The finish is original and has a rich. Warm patina. ... moreAs with most old furniture, one can see areas where the finish has worn a little from use, which suits me just fine. I like to know that an old piece was used, not just displayed. Stunning side by side secretary. Even in its' awful condition it is beautiful. Clearing out an estate and found this gem in the basement. Never refinished. Beautiful cravings, privacy glass door, beveled edge mirror, original hardware. That is the good news. It also has been in the basement for over half a century. But the unit will include the original mirror with the sale as an"extra" mirror. The silver backing is mostly gone on the original, but nice to keep it with the piece. The key is also included with this unit. The wood appears to be Mahogany, but a person who looked at the cabinet thinks it is just dark oak with an old dark patina. This is an antique piece that is hard to find! It was a traveling desk or writing box and could easily be a unique place to store mail and other important documents. It is extra unique that this desk has storage slots built directly into the doors. The signs are metal, I am guessing aluminum. It measures about 8' wide. 2' tall. Beautifully refinished empire mahogany secretary circa 1860-1880. The secretary is made in two parts for easy transport. The overall measurements are 81 1/2" high(good for 8' ceiling homes) 46" wide at the top crown molding and 44 1/2" wide at the door area, and 18 1/2" deep at the bottom. The top section measures 46" wide and 11" deep. It has two glass doors that are 31 1/2" high and 19 3/4" wide. There is a lock in the top door but I do not have the key. Ther are two fixed shelves for displaying. The bottom section measures 37" high and 39 1/2" wide. The bottom section starts with two small drawers that are 16" wide and 4" high. Below that is the writing drop section. This measures 40 3/4" wide and 18" deep. The writing surface leather has not been replaced. After ... morethe drop section are three storage drawers.
