Gorgeous Antique Inlaid Writing Lap Desk
This is a fantastic old wooden lap desk with inlaid design on the top and the front. The lap desk measures 11 5/8" long x 8 3/8" wide x 5 1/8" high. The box is in antique used condition. The inlay is in very good shape. The box is done with veneer over wood. It looks like the little shield on the top and the piece around the key are done with gilding. It is worn as shown on the photos. The veneer is cracking a bit on the top front left corner and a bit on the side in the same area. There is a piece of veneer missing(about 1" long x 1/4" wide) Otherwise there are a few stress cracks in the veneer on the top. Generally the outside of the box is in good condition. On the inside of the box. There was probably velvet covering the wooden desk sections. The pieces are now loose as you can see in the photos because the fabric ... morewas once attaching the wooden pieces to the box. There is still one ink bottle left in the set, the other is missing. Antique TRAVELING Writing DESK w/ INKWELLS & KEY Bureau Lap Box
This is an auction for a beautiful antique traveling writing desk or bureau. It has a wonderful inlaid design and is complete with two inkwells and still has the key(the lock is functional) It measures approximately 11 3/4" vertical) x 13 5/8" wide x 3 1/2" tall(at the back) when closed. The desk slants to be 2 1/4" tall in the front(when closed) When opened. The desk measures approximately 20" long. It has multiple compartments as you can see in the photos. There are two compartments(see pic#10) underneath the wood near the inkwells(where one would place quill pens etc. There is another larger compartment(see pic#12) underneath the top of the felt desk(there is small leather pull tab that lifts the top felt board to reveal the compartment) The inkwells are topped with pieces of bone. Ivory, clay, or bakelite(not ... morereally sure what it is made of…maybe added later? and a cork underneath. The brass handle and plate that is on the top of the desk(when closed) is loose but can be easily secured by the new owner. This desk was owned by my great-grandfather, Walter S. Gifford, who was the President of AT&T and the U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain(he worked with Churchill) If you Google his name, you will see that he is often credited for making AT&T the largest company in the world and for expanding telephone use across the world. Since he worked for AT&T during most of the 1900's, he worked closely with people including Woodrow Wilson, Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, Winston Churchill, and more. We believe that he had this bureau at his office in London when he was the Ambassador. I can write a letter of provenance at the request of the winning bidder. This is a beautiful French writing desk with brass ormolu trim, brass molded edge, and a tag in French that says ... moreit’s from France. It’s has ormolu trim on the top part of the legs, and on the bottom. It has three dovetail drawers, comes with a key, although we never guarantee the locks to work, but it does have one. The finish of the wood is cherry color, and I’m not really sure what kind of wood it is, although it may be yew. It does have some wormholes in it, that show that it came from overseas during that period, and which add lots of charm and character. It has a green gold tooling embossed leather top, border edge in brass, brass ormolu trim on the legs, and brass inlaid on all the drawer fronts. The knob on cabinet door does not look original otherwise a beautiful piece Drawer is nicely worn on bottom slides with patina wear from use with burl wood accents. Dark oxidation on back wood, which we think is poplar, front dovetail with rear peg construction drawer, all of these are solid indicators of age and authenticity Some blocks were added on bottom underside corners to install caster wheels which will be included with purchase Lock needs key and we do not know if it functions. A lovely quality writing slope made from exotic cognac coloured Burl Walnut smothered in showy polished brass mounts with intricate engraved detail. Once opened the quality is evident with the interior of the lid has a central panel of Burl Walnut framed with an exotic banding of Coromandel. The slips all finished in Coromandel too as are all the compartment lids. The box retains it's two original period inkwells marked"Improved London" on the top of the screw tops. Antique Civil War Era Fold Up Lap Desk Wood Veneered Traveling Writing Slope
This is a Beautiful 19 th Century Traveling Lap Desk. The box is covered in a wood veneer and has an inlay circle on the lid and around the key hole. The writing surface is covered in green velvet and is original to the piece. The hinges are original and in good repair. In addition to storage under the writing surfaces. There are four compartments, one of which is covered. The bottom of the desk is covered in green felt. The box is in very good aged condition. There are few places were the veneer has broken and there are some age or shrinkage cracks to the wood(see pictures) The box is 14” across. 9” wide, and 5” tall. It was procured at an Antique Estate Auction in Central Kentucky.

Authenic Antique Baker Writing Desk
This is an original authentic Baker leather-top writing desk. It is used but in good condition considering its age. To my knowledge this desk is upwards of 40 years old. It is still extremely sturdy and usable and definitely appears presentable in a room. It wasn't heavily used for most if its life and was always kept in air conditioned apartments. The writing top is made of leather and is good condition aside from a single small stain from a leaky candle. This is coming directly from my family's own private collection of original antiques. Antique Flip Top Writing Desk All original hardware. This desk was painted white. There are some minor spots where you can see the leftover paint residue that could be removed with a little elbow grease. There are some rings and pen marks on the pull out desk part as seen in the photos. The legs are a little wobbly but could easily be tightened up with minimal adjustments. I have not applied urethane to this again in hopes that I find a buyer that has a"vision" for what look they are going for. I believe that this desk is made of walnut but. Can't say for sure. I was told by one of my customers that their grandmother has the same desk that was from the 1800s and came over from Germany. Maybe for travel.There are a couple of chips in the wood which I have pictured.In the rectangular section at the top is a spot for a pice of wood which is missing.I think for a hidden compartment.The joints are wonderfully fine.There are letters of the alphabet written in pencil on the bottom.

Antique Slant surface Writing Table desk with Victorian era greeting cards included. I am including 4 cards that were hidden in the desk. Three are Victorian embossed cut out greeting cards. See pictures. This antique wooden lap desk is in very good condition. The outside does have a few surface scratches. But no loose wood, warping or large cracks. It would look amazing with just a little touch-up or refinishing. The lap desk has space for two ink wells. The keyhole brass plate and lock are intact. The embossed velvet lining is original and gives it a unique flare. The interior writing surface wood is either oak or walnut. It has an amazing gleam and golden brown grain! There is a brass clasp that swivels to keep the writing surface in place when closed. There are 2 storage areas, underneath each writing surface. There is no key. The desk measures 11.5"x 8" x 3.75" When open. It measures 16" across the entire surface. This would be a great addition to any collection! It is somewhat reminiscent of a burl, but it is quite different: the small knots that make the burl are missing. Thus the wood is stronger, with a beautiful depth to it. Antique 19th C 1870's Victorian Walnut Leather Top Kneehole Writing Table Desk
This Auction is for an Antique 19th Century Approximately 1870's Victorian Walnut Kneehole Writing Table Desk. It measures 31 1/4" tall by 43" wide by 28" deep- it has five drawers with what appears to be its original turned wood handles- it has hand dovetailed drawers and is square nailed- the finish is either original or an old refinish- the leather top I believe is an old replacement- this is a chunky solid very well made piece of furniture- it has some minor use wear on the finish.
