When writers were still using pen and paper. The writing set was an essential for the desk or when travelling. This set is a reminder of this time, when the written word was often the only long distance communication possible. Writing had to be precise and convey just the right information, as corrections were not easy. Of course the letter was then folded over in a small packet and sealed with wax and stamped. This set consists of a letter opener, a dip-pen, a sceau or wax seal and a small covered pencil. The set is housed in a flat leatherette case with a push button closure. The pieces are silver plate with a bit of gilt covering the pen holder and the pencil end. Condition is very good. The box shows its age with some scuffs and a spot on the inside silk lining. This is a neat lap box writing desk my mom's had in the family for years(she's 86) We're not sure where it came from. It appears to be Mahogany wood. It is obviously used and other than dusting out the inside I haven't tried to clean or polish the wood. The felt on the bottom is well worn but the felt inside is not in too bad of shape. It is missing one screw for the inside lids and a couple of the ones there are loose. I do not have a key but it may just take a generic skeleton key. Box is 16" x 10" x 5 1/2" It weighs about 8 lbs. ANTIQUE WRITING DESK– NO RESERVE Acquired at an estate sale in Virginia is this antique wood folding lap writing desk. Unknown type of wood- does have a cedar smell on the inside. Inside in many areas written in pencil is dated information from the 1800’s. Some of the writing with signatures is faded and difficult to read. Some the years can be read are“June 1894” 465 letters” March 15& 16 1895” March( 17, 1877” and“July( 18, 1875” There is no structural damage to the box. There are no apparent breaks or repairs. Hinges are securely in place. Closed the desk measures 3 ¾ inches tall. 11 ¼ inches long and 7 ¾ inches wide. Open the desk measures 15-3/4 inches long. 11-1/4 inches wide and 1-1/4 inches to 2-1/2 inches tall(slopes up) Writing area has ink stains and is loose in one area– see photos. Glass inkwell without cap ... moreis included. Two pencils are also included. When the desk is closed the top has some marks/stains– I have not tried to clean these marks/stains. A fully finished back allows you to place the desk anywhere in your room. Overall this desk is in very good and sturdy condition. The front right foot has a good bit of wear at the bottom as shown in the photos. There is an age separation on the back and two very small ones on the top. Minor wear in the form of tiny marks are present on the piece as well and help to give it character. The height from the floor to the bottom of the desk is 21.5″ except where the decorative apron comes down which is 19.75″ This front right leg has some wear by the foot. Circu 1820's by what I could find in my research. Its finish, internally and externally is excellent. sometimes refered to as"Ship's Captain's" desks. Davenports had a compact design that took up very little space. Reputed to have gotten their name from the inventor. Captain John Davenport, back in the days of Clipper Ships trading to the Far East. This Davenport Desk is a beautiful example of old world workmanship enhanced with inlaid designs. The top of the desk is tan leather with an embossed design running along the perimeter. The Desktop slides forward for a better writing position. And had a hinged lift top with inside storage and 1 usable drawers. The inkwell ... moredoor on the desktop does not latch. This is a very high quality large antique 19th century Victorian handmade wooden writing desk box set. It is very rare. Ornate, and made with an abundance of intricate detailing throughout. the box has very large. Lovely shaped, and very detailed hand cut hinged on the box. They are held by many bronze rivet studs mounting them to the box. the domed shaped wooden piece on the top and the flat piece underneath both open on hinges revealing the inside. there is also a key hole and key on the domed top which operated the locking mechanism. under this section is two square shaped glass inkwells with silver lids. in-between them is a matching ink blotter with very ornate detailing. it sits recessed into the base and has a storage section underneath. This section runs all the way under the inkwells as well so it is a nice sized space. under the ... moreflat hinged piece is more storage and sections for other writing items. the box has acquired a lovely patina from age and measures 11 1/2 inches long by 9 inches wide by 6 1/2 inches tall. the box is in nice antique condition. There are a couple edges of the metal hinges missing but not too noticeable, refer to photos. also the small routed edge running around the bottom has a couple small chips. very nice quality writing box. Stand Up Antique Oak Writing or Partner Desk
Height 41" to front lip. Width 65.5" Depth 31" I believe this to be an 1800's oak writing or partner desk. I bought it in 1981. From the Antique Store that was on Emerson and Hamilton(now occupied by the Institute For The Future) There are brackets on top which may have held additional shelves or storage. The desk top is formed of two'lids' that open to reveal one compartment each that is pretty much the entire interior area. The locks on the lids do not work. Nor do I have the key or keys. It is in very good condition; there is one broken area that can be repaired. It is a wonderful desk for stand-up computing. Drawing, or writing. The style mixes very well with contemporary or loft style furnishings.

Antique Federal Writing Desk in Tiger Mahogany, with Two Small Drawers
Very old. Very classic desk from the early 1800s in, I believe, tiger mahogany. It's not a museum piece but it has been a beloved piece that has been used, with care. I've tried to capture the beauty of the wood on the top in my pictures. All the edges are slightly rounded from use and there are a few minor scratches and nicks, commensurate with its age and use, but its quality shines through. The desk stands. At its tallest point from the backboard to floor, 34" and the desk top is 28 1/2" from the floor. The top is 36" across and 18 1/2" deep, excluding the backboard which adds another 1/2" 19" total) It has two small drawers that sit on each side of the top, 3 1/4" tall, and their platforms measure approximately 10 1/4" by 10 1/4" The outsides of the drawers measures 2 3/8" by 9" ... moreand the insides measures 1 7/8" high by 8 1/4" across by 8 3/4" deep. The desk has its original brass handles but they've seen the greatest wear. With one slightly bent and the other with a small crack. Very similar handles replaced these, as you can see in the last picture. This desk has been in the family for 60 years and has been treasured for the entire time. I'm now having to downsize my mother's estate and I'm hoping someone will love and care for it as we have. I did my best to capture the style and quality in pictures. This is a stunningly rare antique ornate silver-plate and glass desk top inkwell dated 1916. it is made from a very thick silver-plated material and is extremely heavy. it is hand engraved on the face and on the top of the inkwell reading"May 20th 1916" and has the initials beautifully engraved"A.M. the back rest is set on a slight angle and is also made from very thick/heavy silver-plated material and is very ornate. it depicts two dragons facing each other with a string instrument in the center surrounded by scrolls. it also is hand engraved, the base is beautifully footed and has a gorgeously cut out edge. there are two square cut outs to hold inkwells recessed into the base. there are two very large ornate glass inkwells that are used for ink and a wash I believe. they are not original to the piece and are a bit larger ... moreso they don't sit recessed. the piece is in great shape measuring 11 1/2 inches long by 7 1.4 inches wide by 7 inches tall. Antique Hand Carved Wooden Race Horse Figure Writing Desk Set with Inkwell
This wonderful antique hand carved horse figure desk set shows the racing horse mounted on a carved wooden base. It also has a pen trough and inkwell. The horse is carved with amazing detail and its quite miraculous that its fine legs have survived undamaged. It measures 6" tall x 10" long x 4-1/2" wide at the base. It appears to be carved from a teak colored wood but it may not be teak. The base has a carved out log which is used as the pen trough and off to the side is a carved out square recess that holds the inkwell. The inkwell is crystal and has a hinged top. Sadly the lid has become detached and the hinge is damaged. Some areas of ware but comes with a nice original dark patina. The carving is in very good condition with no apparent damage. There are several compartments and drawers. The drawers are all hand dovetailed. Front and back sides. There are the 2 hidden compartments that come out, but look as though they are stationery columns. My guess is that the brass hardware is original. The finish may not be original. The wood may be walnut, not sure though. There are some nicks, surface scratches and signs of aging, all of which I consider age appropriate wear. Hi. You are bidding on a very old inlaid metal box. It has either silver or brass inlay. And I think it is brass because it has a very slight leaning toward that color. The size is ten inches by six inches by three and a half inches. I believe it is from Sweden because the entire storage unit contained mementos from very early Sweden. You can look at my other auctions for an idea about some of the items. This one is in good condition. There is no lock, but there is a latch so that you can lock it. The metal is missing from the edge of one part of the top. Well part of it is missing. It is hard to see, but there is the top section on one side that is missing that rectangular piece. The piece has broken off, as the other side is a single metal strip. The other side is in good shape but the metal is slightly elevated from the wood and I think ... morethat is because there is maybe a very tiny nail missing or something. The inside has slats on some parts that open to the outside of the box. It is almost like you can slip a secret note in there even if it is locked. It is possibly a box that went on a writing desk. The exterior is made out of rosewood and has a mother of pearl inlay piece in the center of the top surrounded with a thin piece of brass inlay. The same mother of pearl inlay with a brass surround is also on the front. The desk folds out twice for 2 different levels of use plus has a 3rd level for storage. When it is first opened the desk has a light blue interior with many small compartments. One side is a singular folder for papers. The other side is divided into many small sections for small items like paper clips or small papers. A covered container with a shell knob handle, and a covered compartment with a ribbon handle, a small pillow with the writing WILLSONS KISS ME QUICK SACHET BOSTON printed in gold and a multiple of other small compartment divisions. ... moreIn one of the covered compartments there are some lovely hand made paper doll cut-out clothes. Another compartment has two printed pieces of payment that say TWO BEECHES BELMONT MASS. It also includes a small ink well bottle with a cover. When the level with the compartments is lifted out there is another fold out section. When that is folded out there is a writing surface. It is covered in deep blue velvet that needs some restoration. Also there is a side panel that is a covered rosewood box that probably held writing utensils. On the side that has some velvet loss the writing panel can be lifed out revealing a 3rd level that is an open wooden box for storage. This is a wonderful captivating Ladies Lap Desk with all original interior. CONDITION: The exterior of the rosewood box is in wonderful strong shape.On the top of the box there is a light rippling effect to the wood veneer. There is one spot on the front of the top with a slight crack that is very minor. On the back edge there is one spot where the veneer has slightly lifted. Antique English Writing Desk— Early 1900s? I got this in Dallas. Texas in 1985. I'm not a dealer or antique expert, so I'll do my best to describe this desk. The pictures will probably tell the story better than I can. The desk is 30 1/4" tall. 53 1/2" wide and 29 3/4" deep. Each leg has a wheel and the two rear legs are loose where they join the desk top. I've included pictures of the joints here and of a drawer so you can see how the desk was made. I've also included an interior picture of the desk at the top. Right, rear corner. Each of the two drawers has a lock. And they read"J.E.A.S. 2232/12" From some research, this hardware is English-made and was used on furniture in the early 1900s, so that's my somewhat uneducated guess at when this desk was built. Here's a quaint reminder of the days before there were no cell phones. Only land lines. This is an antique fall front or drop front desk, and it's rare to see one this small. It was made by the Imperial Furniture Company in Grand Rapids, MI, probably in the 1920s- 1930s. The front pulls down to serve as a writing area. With a pen holder mounted inside. It has a removable back so you could put a land line phone in it and the cord would not get in your way, with space for a telephone book and a pad of paper. It looks like it originally had two dividers inside as well as a drawer underneath, but the drawer and one of the dividers is missing. Antique English Brass Bound Coromandel Writing Slope/ Lap Desk c1860 A handsome military or campaign style writing slope. Beautifully brass bound around all the edges and brass straps running across the top and down the front. There is a brass inlaid plaque. Either side has a heavy cast military flush handle, there is a drawer running the width of the box accessed from one side but has to be released from the inside by removing the brass pin; this ensures the drawer can't be opened when the box is locked up. The box opens to form a writing slope sometimes known as a lap desk, this would certainly not be put on one's lap as the size and weight is prohibitive. The black leather has gold tooling, both sides opening to reveal large compartments underneath for papers and the like. The top section has a lock with working key. The top section ... morealso has a bank of three secret drawers operated pulling the divider between the right hand side inkwell and the sloped pen nib compartment. The box comes with two fabulous period inkwells. All in all a really good writing box in excellent condition, complete with the two keys. 1899 Antique Traditional Cherry Writing Desk with Leather writing surface
This is a beautiful Cherry Writing Desk presented to Reverend B. Phillips in 1899(see photo) The desk box is 6” High. 14” Wide, 8 ¾” Deep when closed and 4” High, 14” Wide, 17 ¾” Deep when opened for use. It has a gold embossed leather writing surface which is in excellent shape for being over 100 years old(see photo– note one slight crease diagonally on lower writing surface. Both leather writing sides open; one for writing paper and one for saved correspondence(see photos of each side open– Wood is perfect– no chips, scratches, repairs, etc. The Pen/ pencil tray is removable to store more pens& pencils underneath(see photos)

RARE ANTIQUE PORTABLE WRITING DESK/TABLET QUADRI CENTENNIAL WITH INK WELL 1892
Offered is a very rare antique portable writing desk/tablet. This is an estate find. The piece has a hardwood back as well as a hardwood cover. Possible oak or maple. The inside of the cover has a three pocket leather file folder. The leather on the whole piece looks to be exotic leather. It is a very different grain than cow hide. The writing surface has three corner ear tabs to hold the paper. Not sure it there was a forth the on the bottom corner. A quill tip pen holder is also on the side made of leather. The previous owner put the green paper in over the old writing paper. His name is written underneath and he scratched his initials on the very back of the piece. At the top are a inkwell holder as well as a quill tip holder. The front button opens the first lid of the inkwell and a second tab opens the inkwell for access to the ink bottle. ... moreThe ink bottle is original to the piece. The ink well appears to have been silver plated at one time. The quill tip holder has a repousse lid with Christopher Columbus and his crew discovering America. A button on the front opens the lid. Inside is lined with a felt material. The inside of the lid has Columbus written in script as well as pat. March 15. 1892. I believe this was made in celebration of the quadri centennial of the discovering of America by Columbus. Very nice piece of American History. Look at the pics as this is still in nice condition.
