I wish I could take pictures that do a little bit better job of showing the color and minute detail in the inlay work performed on this piece. So. Try to use your imagination. The table is nicer then the pictures reflect. To be sure as to rather or not this piece is from France or American made I cant be positive. However, I have been told it is French and over 100 years old. For sure this is the best inlay work I can remember seeing including the mother of pearl laid in place throughout the piece. The drawer pulls are solid brass. The type of handle is a swan neck pull. A writing surface of fine, red leather adorns the top. The care and attention to detail that went into the construction of this antique writing desk is evident through the hand cut dovetails. Dovetails are the strongest way to join a drawer. They take careful precision to do properly. But offer the greatest longevity to the piece. You will also notice the back is fully finished which allows you to place the desk in the middle of a room if your layout requires that at any time. Overall this desk is in very good condition. It is strong. Sturdy, and will last for many years. The leather has sustained the most wear of the desk. You will notice in the accompanying pictures that the right side of the leather has a number of parallel lines which are hard to see unless you are looking closely. This has the rare hard to find Green Leather top but the leather does have some cracking in it from age. This desk has 4 drawers on the left side and 3 on the right along with a center drawer. The center drawer is marked SLIGH furniture Bolland Michigan. All the drawer pulls are in tact and there is no issues with this desk at all. This listing is for the 1867 lap desk. It is signed in pencil under the felted desk lid. I think I make out the name to be Cruch. And possibly lanc(lancaster) and definitely 1867(see photos) The insides are overall nice for age with what may be the original green felt. It has some holes and pitting as shown. It's got a wierd kind of locking device which I can not. For the life of me see a keyhole or how it would lock. It is in the center section on the edges of the top doors. Speaking of the top. It is missing a mother of pearl piece on the top. And you can see there is damage to the veneer, mostly o nthe lid. On the front left side, there is some damage to the upper corner. Antique Rosewood Lap Writing Desk, Stenciled Border 1860's
A very attractive wooden lap writing desk in rosewood. Crafted in America in the mid-19th Century. Nice diamond stenciling on top and front bandings. The writing surface is a rose felt that shows pretty normal wear from 150 yrs or so of use. There is also a writing utensil compartment inside. All exterior wood areas are in good order. No cracks or breaks. There is however some old tape residue on the top surface that can be removed with some patience and skill. Its a nice size at: 11.5" long x 8" wide x 4" tall. It weighs approximately 5 lbs.
