Be sure to add villagewares to your favorites! This elegant 1840's Solid Walnut Drawing Room Desk has a lift top with storage beneath. And two side-by-side drawers. It stands on four beautifully turned legs which taper down to a distinctive ball before finishing with brass tips and rollers. Brass also finishes the drawer pulls, and the main keyhole and hinges for the top. There is a decorative wood trim separating the drawers from the writing top. There are large hand-wrought dovetails on the corners of the writer's top. A walnut cornice tops the top writing section of the writer's desk, also adorned with hand-wrought dovetails. Beautiful wood grains flow throughout the walnut. The desk rolls nicely and is easily moved. It is finished all around and would be attractive toward the center of a room. The two drawers interiors have ... moresome rough top edges. There appears to be deliberate rough carving of two indentations allowing something to lay across the two drawers when closed. I set the slab with a very slight tilt towards the front of the piece as the walnut slab has a shallow edge on which papers could rest. So I made it a desk. Antique Walnut or Chestnut Lap Desk with Pine Bottom Panel Probably USA-made
Lap desk has had more than a little use over the decades. So there are signs of wear(see pictures) The wood is still beautiful. I consulted with a carpenter and he believes it is more likely made of walnut, rather than chestnut. Joints are artfully dovetailed. There are three remaining old brass pieces on it: the two hinges and one tiny arm that holds the felt-covered lid. It is functional. Has been in a private collection for a few decades. Newer brass plate initialed SFF( Old felt was replaced some time ago.

For your Bidding consideration in this Auction is an Antique Walnut(the estate I acquired this from said it was walnut. Another person said it may be mahogany so please view photos) Slant Front Desk. In researching the desk, a very similar desk recently sold on Ebay and was stated to have been made circa 1770 in Philadelphia which is where I am getting my estimated date and place of manufacture from as in all of my research it most closely resembles that one. Please view photos to determine for yourself an estimate of age and manufacturer dating. The desk has 2"Secret" compartments, one is hidden as a false bottom in one of the drawers, the other hidden in the cabinet beneath one of the drawers/ May be others I haven't found. Note the large 4 bottom drawers are graduated in size and pencil numbered. I do not have a good way to weigh it so this is just an estimate The condition for age overall is good. A few things to note is there are as follows: one of the brass key hold covers is missing. May have had a hinged door inside the cabinet at top, there is a very old"mouse hole" finger notch in the top drop front section giving easy access to open the desk, one of the decorative drawers inside the top section of the cabinet is missing the front and sides. I do not have a key for it. May also show a few other scratches and age related dings but overall a very solid, beautiful desk. I am offering this as pick up only as I have never packed a piece of furniture like this and would be nervous about not packing it correctly for shipping. Antique Eastlake Walnut Secretary Desk - Late 1800s
This is an Eastlake secretary from the late 1800s. I think. It's solid wood construction, mostly walnut with walnut burl panels, very tasteful Eastlake geometric details, original wavy glass and beautiful original patina. Three adjustable shelves in the top book case; drop-down writing surface with original felt, two drawers, file bins and pigeon holes; one fixed self in the base. The two locks work with a replacement key, but they are a little sticky, and one of the rosettes that covers the writing panel pivot is missing. Measures: 42 x 85 x 11.5 top, 20 base. I bought this from a private party in DC about 20 years ago and now I'm downsizing a bit, so I hope it finds a good home. AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE WALNUT SLANT FRONT DESK. PENNSYLVANIA Probably Chester County. Signed illegibly four times and dated 1807 Item# 411IQL13P This fine example of Eastern Pennsylvania craftsmanship. Almost certainly originating in Chester County, has a distinct air of ingenuity about it. A departure from the typical corinthian fluted corner columns seen on these cases, the desk employs a quartered column with three graduated divisions of double-ringing in completion of the drawer blades they flank. This effective treatment softens the facade and introduces a certain magnetic rural character to the form. The interior is exceptional. The deep writing surface edged by a scalloped molding conforming with the serpentine of the ten blocked front drawers beneath ten pigeon holes. Instead of employing a prospect door, the center of the interior ... moreis a complicated little box that is easily drawn from the center- over the pigeon holes in this box, the valance actually is a tiny hidden drawer. By removing the entire dovetailed box from the interior, a previously hidden document drawer becomes visible. On the front it is signed illegibly"J. Sh.f.p Rat. 1807" the same signature seen also on the two hidden document drawers that flank this drawer and the two hidden document drawers that flank these as well- to bring out the deepest document drawers, a long string is attached and can be tugged to bring these unseen pieces forward. The front of the desk is composed of a pair of lopers. The fronts of which are set on tiny dovetails and sunk into the blades, and four graduated drawers retaining their original locks and untouched structure with replaced brasses. The top and bottom of the case are openly dovetailed, the back of the case with untouched half-lapped planks retaining their original rosehead and cut nails and a nearly black level of oxidization throughout. antique walnut belter, mitchell & rammelsburg drop front rococo secretary desk
for sale probably the nicest period walnut secretary piece to be had. it was advertised as belter some 20-25 years ago at an estate auction in miss. i expect it is mitchell and rammelsburg but it does not matter. it is civil war era probably made circa 1860-1870. the drawer are hand dove tailed for joints and the bottoms are hand chamfered. it is in perfect condition. the drawers are all solid and do not wiggle or wobble. all the drawers and doors fit perfectly. all drawers and doors have functional locks that work perfectly with the original key. there are no seams in the construction. the sides of the lower drawer portion is one board like 18+ inches wide as well as the sides of the bookcase portion. the walnut used in the construction is of the finest quality with wonderful and perfect grain. it as you see has a pierced carved crest or ... morecrown board that is superbly done and matches the carving on the top of the arched doors of the bookcase. inside the cubbies are perfect along with the drawer. it is a 2 piece affair. The bookcase and cubbies section lifts off the base. it sits on the base and is secured with pegs on either side. i expect the leather on the drop front has been replaced. it is in great condition. the whole piece is just about as good as it can get, not damages or blemishes anywhere that are noteworthy. of course all the large key covers are carved as well as the drawer pulls. it is just a very very nice item. i think it cost about 4500 20 some years ago. i have still have several secretaries and have owned many many of them. i have never owned a nicer one. it is probably the tallest one i have ever owned. it is 98.5 inches to the top of the crest with its original porcelain casters. the cabinet portion is 33 inches tall and 44 inches wide, and 19.5 inches deep. it is 65.6 inches from the top of the cabinet to the top of the crest. the outside of the bookcase is 42 inches wide and 122 inches deep. the inside of the bookcase is 35 inches tall, 10 inches deep, and 40.5 inches wide. the secretary

Circa 1940. The ... moredesk features a classic“cloud” shape design to the front of the desk flanked by two pedestals either side. The top of the desk features a stunning burr walnut veneer confirmation and colour. Below. There is a central working drawer, which is flanked by three further drawers in each pedestal. All the hand-dovetailed drawers are lined in mahogany; this is good indication of quality. The desk features it’s original carved wooden drawer knobs. The pedestals sit on a classic Art deco inverted plinth. The desk boasts a fantastic burr walnut veneer figuration and colour. This is a single piece desk. Antique English Burl Walnut and Tunbridge Inlaid Jewellery or Desk Box c.1860
A really fabulous example of it's type. Particularly good quality with it's rounded edges to the top and in superb condition. The top and front is veneered in the most beautiful burr Walnut with it's rich Cognac colour and decorative grain. The front and top are inlaid with fine quality geometric Tunbridge inlay. The top is inset with a diamond shaped Mother of Pearl and Abalone shell plaque with complimentary Nacre shell escutcheon, complete with a working key; both surrounded with further Tunbridge inlay. The interior has been beautifully re-lined in a marbled paper, creating a fresh and clean interior ready for use. Excellent condition with a good bright patina. 11 3/4" x 8 3/4" x 5" tall. Antique Civil War Era Carved Walnut Lap Writing Desk Box W/ Inkwells Pen & Nibs
DESCRIPTION: FRESH ESTATE FIND. Presenting a wonderful antique carved walnut lap writing desk dating from the late 1800's to Civil War Era. It also includes the pictured wooden handled fountain dip pen. Five(5) extra nibs, and two ink bottles. This lap desk is made of walnut with a star-type design carved on the top along with a keyhole(no key) on the front. It is the type of desk that would have been used by a Civil War officer/soldier while in the field. The lap desk is hinged, and when opened, it reveals a dark purple felt writing surface(which has been split in half over time) It has 3 inner compartments near the front edge(two of which were meant to hold ink bottles, and other- pens/nibs) There are two surviving ink bottles. One is missing its screw top, and is chipped on the top edges. The other bottle has one short vertical crack ... morein the metal brass-colored screw lid. The wooden handled dip fountain pen(some"gnawing" to the wooden handle) reads" Pencil Co. NY March 25, 1879" The 5 extra nibs read" R. Esterbrook& Co's. Swan Quill Portland Oregon, and Turner& Harrison's Business Pen 63" The writing supply area has a hidden compartment that is accessed by lifting up one of the dividers. The writing surface panels lift up to expose large storage compartments which were used to hold documents. Letters or paper. DIMENSIONS: This fabulous antique lap desk measures 13 1/4" by 8 3/4" by 5" tall(closed) CONDITION: This exceptional antique late 1800's walnut lap desk or box is in very good original condition. It has a few scratches. And one small stain on the top lid. The inner purple felt writing surface has split in half over time, and there is a tight crack that originates from one of the brass hinges(measures 1 1/3" long on the exterior) See the last two photos for close-ups of this crack.
