This style of Victorian desk was called a"Davenport" after its English inventor or a"ship captain's" desk because it made efficient use of space on board. Solid walnut. This American made furniture was restored some years ago. The gleaming hand rubbed finish is in excellent condition, there is a shrinkage separation from age, see photos. Side drawers have"racetrack" moldings and carved walnut motif pulls and were rebuilt. The writing surface is leather with gold tooling. Underneath are tiny cubicles for papers and a velvet lining. Antique Portable Travel Writing Lap Desk with bun feet. This piece was purchased at an estate sale in the Washington DC area. Desk measures approx. 17" long x 9 deep x 14" tall. There are several compartments and drawers. The drawers are all hand dovetailed. Front and back sides. There are the 2 hidden compartments that come out, but look as though they are stationery columns. My guess is that the brass hardware is original. The finish may not be original. The wood may be walnut, not sure though. There are some nicks, surface scratches and signs of aging, all of which I consider age appropriate wear. A little bit of veneer damage, some stress cracks(some are natural in the wood) and inside has some slight warping. There is no key. I love this piece but have nowhere to display it in my home. This book case is a beautiful and unique piece. It stands 51" H x 32 1/4" W x 10 1/2 D. Another 3 inches for the bottom decorative pieces. Originally it would have sat on another piece of furniture. A desk or marble topped chest of drawers? It sits solidly on the floor. But I had it for years hanging on my wall. The decorative top is delicately spoon carved in the eastlake design. 16526 Antique Victorian Walnut Butler’s Secretary Desk - Civil War Era
We are pleased to be offering today this gorgeous Victorian oversize 107” tall butler’s walnut secretary desk that came in recently. We are always intrigued with these and they are always found in the old dark Civil War era finish which is kind of grungy and doesn’t show the walnut right. So. We brought it into the restoration shop to hand strip(which takes a long time, but is well worth it to leave the patina or original color in the wood) hand sand meticulously throughout, stain the same factory color and applied multiple coats of hand rubbed lacquer until it builds up a beautiful semi glow lustrous finish such as this. It has the original glass, original triple adjustable shelves, we had to replace some of the center slats and the crest is original. Everything on this desk is original except for the exterior finish and the felt that we ... morereplaced. The cabinet dates from the 1860s era. We are fortunate enough to get one or two of these every year, but we scour the entire United States to obtain the rare and hard to find items such as this. This desk has gothic block pyramid columns down on the base with spoon carving on the incise carved and picture frame panel doors that open for a large space that probably had a shelf previous. If the buyer would like us to put a shelf behind the doors, we will do so if you tell us at the time of purchase. The cabinet also features panel sides all the way up, which a cheap one would not as it would be plank sides, but this one is walnut all the way. There is Cornish molding all the way around the shapely two doors that open to reveal a triple shelf adjustable height interior, carved columns with diamond points for motifs and big leaves are carving in with dainty little cornices. The top of the cabinet has a double wide crown molding and a large center finial broken arch top. It doesn’t get much better than this. In 1870. When William S. Wooton(sometimes incorrectly spelled Wooten) established his furniture business in Indianapolis Indiana, I doubt he could have imagined that he would become the undisputed'King of Desks' It was in 1874 that Wooton was granted a patent for his Executive Rotary Desk. Because they were expensive(ranging from $75 to $800) only the wealthy were able to purchase his desk. Bankers, lawyers, doctors, politicians, and kings were the owners of these fabulous pieces of furniture. This Wooton desk, in the Renaissance Revival style, is a beautiful example of his achievement. The highest grade black walnut is used with ample use of burl walnut. We have delicately restored this piece: touched up the finish in a couple places, installed a custom made piece of new leather for the writing surface, and hand waxed the entire ... morepiece. It is essentially an original example of Wootens desk. Unopened size is 44 wide, 80 high, and 30 deep.
