Old topper probably off of a bed but would make a nice wall or door pediment. Painted with an old coat of light green paint over walnut wood. The crest is very deeply carved with the curved top part protruding out about 3 1/2" from the face. Has no damage except a chip which is in the back so really a non issue. I have up for sale a gorgeous matching pair of Antique circa 1870s or there abouts Victorian Walnut Side Chairs. Very unusual upper section featuring carved serpents. The chairs are walnut with burl veneer accents. Eastlake spoon carving and ball top finials. The chairs are in Superb Condition- appear to have been refinished and reupholstered at sometime in the past. This would have been done many years back as the lovely woman that I purchased these from was well into her 80s and probably done this back in the 50s at the time when they moved into their home. They were cherished and extremely well cared for any use wear is most meager-condition wise impossible to get any better than this. Just found at an estate sale here in Boston a really really nice and completely original American Federal 1820s writing desk with side drawer. Nice Period inkwells. Amazing condition for being almost 200 years old. Nice period piece and very hard to find. All of the hinges are strong including the writing compartments. Nice ivory inlay on the skeleton key face and a wonderful lock mechanism. I've been told this is military because of all of the brass reinforcements. I think it still could be a desk for very wealthy individuals. the very long drawer pulls out smoothly and on very solid condition. The last owner appears to have been an Elizabeth M Updike. Recently acquired it at an estate sale. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself. The lap desk is probably English made. But that is just a guess, you be the judge. F or your consideration is this walnut antique lap desk in very nice condition. The walnut case has a great luster to it. What makes this piece really unique is the secret slide drawer compartment. It can be opened by opening the case and then taking the brass rod out of the left side of the box that"locks" it in place. The previous owner was an Elizabeth M Updike from Princeton NY. The famous writer. John Updike, had a daughter named Elizabeth, ... morebut correspondence is too old to have been hers. Possibly and earlier family member as John was born in 1932. There are some wedding invitations from the early 1900s in this drawer, a letter that has Princeton 66 on it. Not sure if year, for 1966 or means something else. There is a letter to a Mr. E. M. Updike in the drawer as well from a Turnbull that accompanied a Liberty Bond Medal for WWI efforts in gather funds for the war effort(Princeton NJ Victory Liberty Loan Committee) It probably meant Mrs. but you know the government, they can't even get the sex of a party right in correspondence, eh? Another piece of paper with genealogical information on it talking about Updike's grandfather Samuel Montgomery(1816-1878) married to a Matilda Stockton. Also a mention of a Samuel Updike and his children in this same piece. Also correspondence to Elizabeth Updike in 1927 from Wm Ball& Sons in West Chester. PA. ENGLISH made burr Walnut writing slope lap desk from the victorian era approx 1860-1880.lots of inlay. It is in fantastic condition and ready to use. It has had its leather writing surface replaced at some point in its life. Looks good. There have been repairs done in bits on the sides of box.nothing terribly bad and not terribly noticeable. felt on bottom has been replaced. The ink well comparment on one side has dividers and due to a bit of wood shrinkage. They will fall but they stay put if you put them in place and set the lap desk somewhere.the hidden comparment is missing the long piece of wood that has the trigger mechanism on it to hide the 3 drawers.it doesnt take away from the charm or beauty of it.one tiny drawer knob is missing.over all, its in great usable, sturdy condition.ready to be used to write your letters.i have 3 and ... moream keeping two.hard to let one go but i dont write enough letters to justify keeping 3. Approx 20 in long. 10 in deep Over 7 in tall. This is a large one.not the standard little size you see so many of. Sadly no key.but i am sure one could be made as the lock does work.

This Auction is for an Antique 19th Century Approximately 1870's Victorian Walnut Kneehole Writing Table Desk- Nice Size Perfect For A Unique Functional Computer Desk. It measures 31 1/4" tall by 43" wide by 28" deep- it has five drawers with what appears to be its original turned wood handles- it has hand dovetailed drawers and is square nailed- the finish is either original or an old refinish- the leather top I believe is an old replacement- this is a chunky solid very well made piece of furniture- it has some minor use wear on the finish. Two of the drawer locks are missing, and the back corner brace came loose and needs to be reglued- other than those flaws it is in very good condition.

The original glossy finish has been revarnished over the years and is very well preserved with enough wear for warm antique patina. There are stains. Mars at the edges, shrinkage separations from age and ink stains for character. Waxed and polished, only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain its luster. The drop front key is a handle only, the lock does not work. Inside are cubicles and small drawers. A separate piece for easier moving. The bookcase has a working lock. Really best used on a table or some other stable surface. Sold originally to me by an antique dealer as"mid to late 19th century" Measures 18" x 19" x 3" when opened and 18" x 9.5" x 5.5" when closed. Constructed of a beautiful straight grained hardwood. Looks to be walnut(as there's more visible grain to it than with mahogany) Rare for implements such as this. It also comes with its original key and a working lock! Stunning Antique Walnut Lap Campaign Desk Brass Inlay 1800s? Secret Compartment
Here is a great Antique Lap Writing Desk for your buying consideration. Recently acquired it at an estate sale. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself. The lap desk is probably English made. THE PREVIOUS OWNER SAID IT BELONGED TO HIS GRANDFATHER IN ENGLAND. F or your consideration is this walnut antique lap desk in very nice condition. The walnut case has a great luster to it. What makes this piece really unique is the secret compartment with 2 small drawers. There is a board that runs the length of the case just under the inkwell and pen holder section. The secret compartment board still in place and you Just push down on right side and it springs out. Amazing that it is all there and still works. All still there behind the secret panel and there are white bone knobs on each drawer. My guess is this pieces dates to the early to ... moremid 1800s. You be the judge before buying. This lap desk is beautiful with only small surface scratches. The corners have brass corner pieces. One of the leather pieces needs re gueing but i am leaving that too the new owner. Very nice wood and graining. The inside folding pieces are still all there as well. The lock and latch is there and comes with a key that operates the lock. That does not happen very often with a piece of this one's age anymore. The top of the desk has leather dark material on it which is hard and shows some wear. Both sides of the lap desk open for storage. Has open areas for two ink bottles in the well areas. One on the left and one on the right. Very RARE that both ink wells are with the piece obviously one had red ink and the other black. And a storage area for the pens that has a wood cover. Two other storage areas between the pen area and ink holder, The brass top piece is in place, cannot see any engraving on it and the brass piece around the lock keyhole is also in place. I see no maker mark on the lock mechanism. The lap desk measures 17-15/16" wide. 6-13/16" tall and is 9-5/8" wide. Don't miss out on this unique item. VERY RA

Exterior wood, sides, top drawer fronts are solid walnut, and the minor interior wood is a softer pine or fir. has a flat, single panel flat rough cut bottom, typical of 1700's style chests. Hand cut dovetails. sides are solid, intact minor cracking as shown in pictures. Back is missing the middle board. Top is dovetail attached. Missing 1 brass drawer bail on bottom drawer. Appears to be original finish. Drawer bottoms have some cracking. Drawers and drop front have locking mechanisms, no key. Square head type nails throughout. I would date it to around the 1890-1910 period. It's burr walnut, figured walnut& solid walnut, plus it has the original brass handles. There is a shaped tooled leather writing surface& there are pull out leather topped slides on either side. The top section has ... moreconvexed ends all the way around, including the drawers. It has beautifully shaped burr walnut panels on the outside& inside the pedestal. All the edges are curved& it sits on ogee bracket feet. There are drawers to the front, plus a single drawer on the top section of the back& cupboards below, with shelves inside. The burr walnut is really tight& the drawers are finely dovetailed. This desk also has a lovely original colour& comes apart into three sections. I don't think it's quite sitting together perfectly in the images, which is why you may spot the odd slight gap where the top sits on the pedestals. In fact I can see it's not lined up straight. This desk has just been restored& polished, with locks& keys, so it's in good condition. Width- 64" 162 cm Depth- 39.5" 100 cm Height- 29.5" 75 cm Knee hole height- 24" 60 cm. Each section of glass on the doors is an individual pane of glass. Below the bookcase section is the desk drawer. When opened it reveals a gorgeous brown leather writing surface as well as a number of compartments. Drawers, and a locking storage door. This area measures 41.5″ wide x 15.5″ deep when open and is 31.5″ from the floor. Four drawers below the desk drawer provide plenty of storage. These are the original drawers that have been re-veneered and re-brassed. They open and close nicely but some do stick out a little on the right hand side as you will see in the pictures. Burled walnut was used on the front of this secretaire bookcase. Given its name for the darker burled grain that swirls throughout the wood. Belgian, Dutch and Austrian cabinetmakers of the time were known for their superior craftsmanship. The original period finish is what has even turned into more conrasts as the patina has mellowed on the entire piece. Open the locking cabinet door and find an open space with the locking mechanism for the lowes small right hand drawer. And, by the way, all of the drawers are marked as to where they belong. This lower drawer will stay locked until the small mechanism is pressed to release the drawer to open. All of the drawers are covered in a really cool paper which has obviously been there for over 100 years and maybe longer. It has a very silvery look to it. American Chippendale Walnut Antique Slant Front Desk, Pennsylvania c. 1790-1815
AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE WALNUT SLANT FRONT ANTIQUE DESK. PENNSYLVANIA Probably Delaware River Valley. Circa 1790-1815 Item# 1407JXE27P This is an outstanding example of late Chippendale from the Delaware River Valley region of Pennsylvania. The craftsman executing this work selected the walnut planks with great care. Utilizing a positively chaotic grain flow for the drawers and prospect door with a more symmetrical grain for the lid and sides of the case. Lifting over period brass hinges(possibly original) to rest firmly on projecting lopers reveals a rectangular prospect door flanked by document drawers and two-over-one drawers beneath four pigeon-hole letter slots. The document drawer sides are covered with period inscriptions. Much of it being accounting but also with a note in the same hand and pigment reading"August 4 1812" and ... morea somewhat illegible signature of"Ger Ryall Jr. The facade of the desk is composed of four graduated drawers with molded lipping and period brasses in the original holes(probably replacements) The drawers are constructed in the typical manner for this region. The frame of poplar with dovetails of the sides contained within the dovetails of the front and back, the bottom boards half-lapped and deeply chamfered along the edges to set in grooves along the sides and front with triangular glue blocks along the chamfered edges for permanence. The back edge is tacked with square forged iron nails. The interior of the case features three-quarter depth dust boards of yellow pine. These joined together with tongue-in-groove joinery that has long since separated and left gaps between sections. The underside of the desk is clean and solidly constructed with a large rectangular block inside each foot- the underside is apparently untouched and retains an illegibly signature in large strokes. The"B" J" or"R" that is so boldly represented on the underside is also found on the bottom of several drawers and both document drawers. The back of the desk is untouched ot

Very minor scuff touch up on the front and sides and the top needs refinished due to age. It was made in High Point NC. USA. The company was called the Alma Desk Co and it was acquired and renamed The Myrtle Desk Co. The Company was run by The Hayworth Family. Mr Hayworth passed on in 1929 leaving his wife Mrs. Myrtle Hayworth to take over the reins of the company and successfully keep it going through the great depression era. The company continued to grow well into the 1970's becoming one of the World's largest office furniture companies. Antique Burl Walnut Inlay? Desk Organizer Or Letter Box
You are bidding on an antique desk organizer or letter box of some sort. Unsure who made it or how old exactly but it is at least 50 years old because I've seen it in an old family picture from then. It's made of burl walnut and I'm not sure what else. I believe that's the key to it but end is broken so no way to know for certain because it doesn't work. Still opens though as seen in pics. It's missing pieces of the dark wood molding around the top in parts as well as down the back on both sides in places. Has a small chunk out of the front too. Unsure how to grade this piece so take a good look at the pictures and let me know if you want to see more or have questions.
